Houston Chronicle 5/9/04
"Mark DeRosa led off the eighth with a single to center. With an 0-2 count on Jesse Garcia, Oswalt ripped a fastball that sent Garcia ducking. Garcia trotted toward first as though he had been hit, prompting Oswalt, Chavez and Williams to complain.
'The pitch is made, right? On Garcia,' Williams said. 'The guy behind the plate (Darling) doesn't do anything. He doesn't say it hit him. He doesn't say foul ball. Anything. Now, all of a sudden the batter starts going toward first base.
'Now the home plate umpire goes, `Foul tip.' And he goes (lifting his right arm as if to simulate the call for an out). Out. It would have been the third strike. Then he called timeout, and now he goes and confers with the umpire at second base (Drake).'
That's exactly when the Astros went off.
'The guy at second (Drake), there's no way with a guy throwing 95 mph, he can see the ball touch a guy's helmet," Oswalt said. "I can't see it, and I'm 55 feet away after I throw it. He surely can't hear it. He's 120 feet away. There's 40,000 fans screaming, and you can hear it?
'That's pretty tough. You got to have pretty good ears to hear that. You just got to take control behind the plate. If (Darling) doesn't hear it nick his helmet, then how's the guy at second base going to hear it. He's two feet away, and the other guy is 120 feet away.'
Williams already had argued in the third inning with third base umpire Mark Carlson. He had asked Carlson Friday night if Carlson had ever played baseball before during an argument after Tim Redding was issued a warning for hitting a batter. While Williams argued with Darling on Saturday, second baseman Jeff Kent argued with Drake.
Once Drake tossed Williams, pinch hitter Rafael Furcal grounded out to third. Wilson Betemit followed with a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Adam LaRoche cut the Astros' lead to 3-2 with a single to right.
After falling behind 3-0 with a pitch low in the strike zone to Chipper Jones, Oswalt's frustrations boiled over and he yelled at Darling. Jones eventually tied the score with an RBI walk, marking the end for Oswalt.
Once in the dugout, Oswalt tossed a full container of gum, drawing an ejection.
'The umpire at second was calling the whole game,' Oswalt said. 'He overruled two calls tonight from the umpire behind the plate. Usually the umpire behind the plate is the guy that's on the field. He's behind the plate. He controls what's going on. And the guy at second pretty much did two jobs. He called strikes and called the bases. When you're behind the plate, you have to do your job. Don't let somebody else do it for you.'

losing because of bad calls sucks. im not surprised jimmy williams was thrown out of the game. he always gets into fights with umps, he has no temper at all, he used to be the gm in boston a few years ago, he got thrown out of quite a few games. -

Hey, how about that Red Sox-Indians game tonight. Dave McCarty, with the pinch hit, game winning triple to drive in 2 in the 8th, Foulke shuts them down in the 9th, Sox win 5-3.
Never again will I call Dave McCarty "Walter". -

There has never in my knowledge been a game in history in which the umpires prevented a team from winning a game. Don't even give me that, "it was the umpire's fault" crap. -

Well the A's bullpen held Detroit for 8 innings without giving up any runs so hopefully this is a turning point. Yeah it was Detroit, but at this point, I'll take what I can get. And actually Detroit has been pretty respectable so far. I like to see Crosby and Dye hitting homers too cause it's been awhile for both of them. All in all, a pretty good game for the A's. And they're a .500 club again. Yay. -

anyway, if anybody watched or checked out the scores last night, the pirates had a nice win over the cardinals, the last 2 innings werent the best, but they had a pretty good 7 innings to start with. daryle ward hit for the cycle, with 6 rbi's. that makes him and his father the first combination of father and son to do that in baseball history. it was a good game
