Well, the BCS has just turned into the Busted Controversy System. Utah demolished BYU to finish at a perfect 11-0, Boise St. continued to roll over the shit that stands in their way, and Auburn and Oklahoma don't look like they're losing anytime soon, so it looks like we'll end a college football season with FIVE unbeatens this year, unless something really drastic happens. Utah, of course, doesn't belong in the Orange Bowl, but they're all but guaranteed a BCS bid, which means either Cal or Texas is getting screwed (unless Auburn, OU, or USC loses). Think the playoff system will get support now? This is NOTHING compared to last season. The BCS has been lucky in its first six years, never having more than two undefeated teams in one season before... until now. Auburn is most likely to lose, since their last game will be against SEC East Champ and ranked Tennessee, but the Tigers are just too damn good. OU will play Iowa State (IOWA STATE?!) for the Big 12 Championship, and unless Darrin Sproles suddenly transfers from KSU to ISU, I don't think we'll see a repeat of last year. And USC has rivalry games against Notre Dame and UCLA, and even though it'll be tough rivalry games, no one expects the Trojans to lose.
So who plays in the Orange Bowl? I would accept any argument over which of the big three is the best, honestly, and one of them is going to get screwed, which is a shame. Personally, I'd say have the winners of the four BCS bowls play off to determine a championship. Two more weeks isn't that bad, really, though it would extend the college season. Plus you'd be like creating three more bowls.
And what sucks is that Boston College will most likely get a BCS bid because it owns the Big East, and will most likely play... Utah. I'd rather see Utah play a quality team like Cal or Texas or even Auburn (first and last matchups are like.. impossible) than BC, who they will probably demolish (and thus start to think that they're good.
Anyway, Michigan lost, but still gets to go to the Rose Bowl because Iowa beat an imploding Wisconsin team that went from possible Orange Bowl to crappy bowl in two weeks. And Iowa is technically co-Big 10 champ.
xxCedarPointFreakxx will prolly write off the OSU win as proof that this season was a "success." Nevermind he was practically guaranteeing the national championship at the start of the season....
And lastly, we all know there hasn't been a team to start the season ranked #1 and stay that way throughout an entire season since like 93 or something like that, but when was the last time that two teams ranked 1 and 2 ran the entire season just like that? Pretty impressive.
Anyway, in short, if you wanted to make this season nice and neat, you'd have USC play Utah, and OU play Auburn, then have the winners of those two games play for the national championship. That way, the teams with the best records all have a say.
And Boise St. doesn't count, even though they're undefeated and own the nation's longest winning streak, because they play teams like the University of Hicksville in Mobile, Alabama and Carnegie Junior High School, so it's a given that they'll win with such a pathetic schedule. That and they play on a blue field.
Oh yeah, did anyone catch Clemson/South Carolina doing their best Pistons/Pacers impressions? At least the fans weren't involved, but that was still ugly. -

To steal a gimmick from Peter King: Four things I think I know after week 13.
1) Corky, I think you should be a little more scared of Notre Dame than you are. They're the most schizophrenic team in the nation. They can either hang with anyone or play awful, depending on how they're feeling at the moment. The most worrying thing for you is that they always seem to be up for the big games. They've won two of four games against ranked opponents (Michigan and Tennessee) and only lost to BC by one point. Yes, USC is the favorite heading into next week - and rightfully so - but when you think Notre Dame is going to zig, they zag. Completely unpredictable. How will the Trojans know what they're in for? Ten minutes into the first quarter, they'll know. Either a dogfight or a blowout. Nothing in between.
2) I think Florida State got exactly what they deserved for not trusting Chris Rix and Xavier Betia. Maybe they were right keeping Sexton as their quarterback after he performed well when Rix got injured. Maybe they were right letting Sexton carry on after he failed against Maryland. But Bobby Bowden was wrong when he left Sexton in the Florida game as long as he did. If its the second quarter of your biggest rivalry game of the year, and your sophmore quarterback is leading an anemic offense, with a battle-tested senior on the bench...well, what would you do? Rix entered the game late in the third quarter, but it was too late. On the other hand, there was never a good reason to bench Betia. Yeah, he was shanking kicks like crazy, but when you have a kicker, you have to stick with him through the thick and thin. Even if you've got a stud freshman waiting in the wings like Cismesia. Because if you switch to the freshman...well, he's liable to miss thirty-yarders against your bitter rivals.
3) I think my Hokies are putting together a nice, quiet run at the ACC title. I know, I know, I'm a homer, but hear me out. Next Saturday, we have the Commonwealth Cup game against UVA, which should be the game of the week. We might even attract College Gameday (Please, Lee?!? I'll have your manbabies!). I feel confident about our chances there. Not cocky, but fairly confident. And then, its on to Coral Gables. Now, I'm not saying that we will beat Miami, but just remember: we dismantled them last year, and they're probably a little worse this year than they were last year. It's definitely possible. Not exactly likely, but possible.
4) I think that Steve Spurrier should meet his South Carolina Gamecocks. -

To be honest, I'm more worried about USC underestimating Notre Dame than I am of Notre Dame itself. If both teams come out playing at their best, I have no doubt that USC will win. And frankly, I can say the same is true no matter who we play, except perhaps Auburn and Oklahoma. Basically, when the Trojans are rolling, they're unstoppable.
The only way we can lose to the Fighting Irish is if we beat ourselves. They will not beat us. It sounds cocky, but I'm being factual... we're too good of a team to lose to Notre Dame WHEN WE ARE CLICKING.
So with that said, I really hope we come out and end it early. I definitely wouldn't mind a repeat of the last two years... which would be another 40 point slaughter to get that Shellalie (or however you spell it). -

Anyone catch Tom Malone's fake punt that could have resulted in a touchdown if it weren't for pass interference? Anyway, that was just a hilarious play, and Trojans roll again after a sluggish start to win 41-10. Up next: Bruin hunting. Barring another screwfest, we're going to the Orange Bowl baby!
Leinart kinda pulled a Carson Palmer of two years ago, going crazy on national TV vs Notre Dame.
It's just a shame that one of the three undefeated championship caliber teams is going to get screwed.
And I think they need a new rule in the BCS... if you win one of the BCS conferences but aren't ranked in the top 10, you're not guaranteed a BCS Bowl. Because it's bull that Pitt or Syracuse might get a spot in the BCS because one of them will be the Big East winner. And they'll most likely play Utah, which will kill them, and then people will think that Utah is better than it really is.
Also, Texas or Cal gets screwed as well.
Personally, I'd have Utah played the undefeated team not in the Orange Bowl, and have the ACC and Big East champs play each other in the Sugar or Fiesta Bowl. -

Every time I see Pete Carroll on TV as USC head coach and I realize that he's head coach of an undefeated--hell, winning--football team, I am always surprised, because I still remember him as being the most incompetent coach the Patriots ever had. I mean, he really sucked, in the pros. -

Texas is going to get screwed. Again. As is Auburn. Texas CAN beat Utah, Cal, and Boise State. I will put money on that. Put them in a BCS game. Damn. -

I'll bet the BCS peeps feel real smart now...
USC won.
Oklahoma demolished.
Auburn won.
Cal squeaked.
Utah's still undefeated.
Pitt is guaranteed a spot.
Geez... it'll be fun sorting stuff out. It looks like Auburn will get screwed... it's ok... we know how you feel.
Right now, it looks like USC vs OU at the Orange Bowl. Cal vs Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Utah vs Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl. Auburn vs Va Tech in the Sugar Bowl.
Of course, if Texas sneaks ahead of Cal in the BCS, we could turn things over even more. As of now, the Fiesta Bowl will be crap, because Utah should kill Pittsburgh, but if Texas bumps Cal out, I wouldn't mind seeing Utah come to the Rose Bowl against Michigan, while Texas would play Pitt.
Anyway, USC has all but sealed an Orange Bowl bid, even with their ugly game. I guess UCLA was due for an actual game.
We so need a playoff system. The four major Bowls narrow down to four, and then a real championship game. Also, you need to be ranked in the BCS Top 16 or maybe even Top 10 to be guaranteed a major bowl game when you win a major conference. That way, a not-as-good team like Pitt wouldn't be able to kick a team like Texas or Cal out.
It's funny that before this year, the BCS has never had more than two undefeated teams finish, but this year, we have five. And had Louisville intercepted that pass like it should have, it would have been SIX! -

Alright, the final polls are out and assuming no change in the computers here are the final BCS rankings:
1. USC: 0.9747
2. OU: 0.9681
3. AU: 0.9332
4. Tex: 0.8476
5. Cal: 0.8348
The interesting thing will be how the computers turn out. Cal gained one spot in Saragin and is now 0.02 over Utah for the number 5 spot. None of the other computers have been released, Cal is down 0.25 in Anderson, 26 in Billingsly (3 points moves up one spot, 4 moves up 3), 0.061 in Colley (0.028 moves up 1), 0.085 in Massey (0.57 to move up 1), 0.365 down in Wolfe (0.197 to move up 1).
Excluding computers, Cal has a 0.5681 human average versus Texas' 0.5543, meaning Texas needs to make up 0.0138 by staying far enough ahead in the computers. That translates into roughly 0.0414 points in the computer ahead of Cal in the computers to tie (so add a little more to pass). Currently Texas is 0.08 ahead of Cal assuming last week's computers. The gain in ground in Saragin this week is equal to 0.01in the polls, brining Texas' lead to 0.07, leaving the Longhorns 0.0286 wiggle room through the remaining polls.
If past Saragin rankings were avaliable I would make a call as to who will be at #4 projecting how much Cal will gain, but right now it is simply too close to call. The one thing to be said though is, it is going to be damn close.
As you may have caught by now, I never mentioned the race for #2... thats because there is none. OU and USC are in the Orange Bowl and that is all but announced. So Cork, we finally get our match-up, and it should be a hell of a game. That leaves Auburn versus Va Tech in the Sugar, Utah versus Pitt (Zzzzzzz) in the Fiesta, and #4 versus Michigan in the Rose. Fiesta already locked in Utah pretty much, so don't expect them to take Texas over Utah should Texas pass Cal. -

Auburn vs. Va Tech in the Sugar Bowl won't get much viewership and that's sad. To me Auburn vs. Cal would really be the two most impressive teams in college football. Ok so Cal was edged by USC but how much better is SC really?
Enough of not making sense. The point is, the BCS is not a good system. We all know that. But a playoff system wouldn't be that much better; there would still be as many people claiming it's unfair. How many teams can really play in a playoff system? Eight tops? There are about as many div. I football teams in the nation as basketball teams, and they're still adding teams to March Madness! There are 20 teams that deserve a shot at the national title this year, and you just know there's always going to be about 9.
