General Chat / Popup blockers.

    your browser should have a pop-up blocker implented. i use "maxthon" and i get a popup once a month or so. in addition, i'd recommend a spyware scanner, as others have said. i use adaware's adwatch. the newest v1.03 professional is very good in my opinion. it keeps you from all the bad things. especially when you do regular scans.
    to be absolutely safe, i'd install antivir personal as well. it's a free virus scanner that has been tested better than norton's antivir 2004 and comes with almost daily online updates. it has a "guard" thing as well which is very useful for trojans or virii you might get from kazaa. if you like, try some of them out.

    and as for adware... well, suprnova.org is your best bet.
