The thing that has always held me back from religion is exactly what doc just said though... it fills him with happiness to be in a church, as it does for a muslim in a mosque, or a jew in a synagogue or whatever. At most, 1 of them is right... so there's one hell of a lot of deluded people out there. I won't gamble with my life like that. Plus, I find religion superficial etc, but that's subjective whereas the above argument is objective. -

That's a good argument, Deano, and it's one that I was worried about before 'God saved me' or 'I became a Christian' (which ever you prefer). I'm not trying to convert anybody here, but in my case I just read a little bit of the Bible, prayed to God asking if He was real, and He answered me supernaturally. That's what gave me faith in Christianity and in God because I believe for certain that it's all real thanks to that experience and plenty of subsequent experiences also. -

Yes, but muslims, hindus etc have these same "experiences" too... my belief is that its psychological self-delusion, something like Tenessee Williams exploited with the character of Blance in Streetcar Named Desire (oh yes, A-level English...) -

Precisely deano.
Therein lies another fundamental flaw with organized religion. Each religion perceives itself to be the one true faith, all others be damned (metaphorically speaking). Jim Jones believed this with so much fervor that he and his followers offed themselves. Same with the Heaven's Gate (I keep wanting to call them Applegate...probably cause of the whole apple sauce thing that they are associated with).
Others have offed innocents who disagreed with their point of view (please refer to the Crusades, the Inquisition, the destruction of Rome, et. al for proof of attrocities in the name of "God").
I just realised that this post has NOTHING to do with the topic. Sorry about that.
Back on topic (or we could just change the subtitle of this topic to....will fags go to hell?) -

Maybe long, long ago (and if God exists which i beleive he didnt) God said to about 10 or 20 people all about him or something and each person had their own take on the event and each set up a religion or something and they were all great storytellers wrote a book about what happened etc. and when their followers started to meet each other and wondering weather the other religion was right or not the leaders condemmed the other religions as "false".
Just an idea... in fact, its probebly in the Bible or something. Dunno. Aint read it in a while. -

I think religion was made up by a whole group if people who couldn't explain the things they saw, and they convinced everyone else to follow this certain way of living or they would go to hell.
Just what I think. -

Unfortunately, rage, that doesn't work because there are some religions that have more than one god, and others that have none at all (eg, Buddhism). I have to agree with Phantom Raider, religion is just used to explain what science can't. One must also realise that it is programmed in our genes to survive - ie, survival of the fittest, Darwinism etc. Therefore any believable option of life after death that we are given, we are liable to take. -

Because if you read the whole thread there was this whole thing about how some religions see homosexuality as a sin. Then the religion thing got started. -

Just a little correction about the second part of that sentence. Many faiths that I've studied do not in fact believe that those outside their church will be sent to hell. They believe that God will make the decision based on what they've done in their lives. Each religion perceives itself to be the one true faith, all others be damned (metaphorically speaking).
Not starting a fight, just pointing out stuff I've studied. -

Not taking it as a fight....please refer to the parenthesis ... (metaphorically speaking). Meaning not actual, just dealing with the "professed non-believers" of that particualr religion in their own fashion. -
