Don't you people get it?
Music is Music
Rap and Heavy Metal are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. However, they are both music.
Yes, Rap has rhymes and beats.
Yes, Heavy Metal has amazing instruments and (i forget that guitar term...umm....like rift or something? I'm not a guitar person sorry)
The point of the matter is that they are both good, just depends on what you like!!!!! I know tons of peopel who like one and hate the other, and tons of people who love both!!! So stop arguing about what is better, if you say one type of music sucks, then you don't know how to appreciate music. Period. -

You guys are all missing the point, you're saying it's harder to write rap music because of the lyrics. Well you forgot the minor detail that bands play INSTRUMETNS. You're trying to tell me it's easier to learn guitar than right a crappy rap. But instruments aside I still think their is more to writing rock lyrics than rap, you're soo wrong when you say all they do scream. That's such a sterotype attitude it makes me sick considering you no absolutly nothing about rock. For the music I listen to the lyrics are sung in melodies, and the subject matter isn't death or insanity. It's either
1.Questioning Govenment or Society
2.Anti-War
3.Love
4.Dreams and Nightmares
5.Friendship
And the only song I know that relates to death is one about how life shouldn't be wasted and you should live each day as if it were your last. Now compare that to raps subject matter of drugs, big cars, money, and girls you can see who are the more intelligent musicians.
How about I add some examples:
"So close no matter how far
couldn't be much more from the heart
forever trusting who we are
and nothing else matters
never opened myself this way
life is ours, we live it our way
all these words I don't just say
and nothing else matters" -Metallica's Nothing Else Matters
"Heavy rings on fingers wave
Another star denies the grave
See the nowhere crowd, cry the nowhere tears of honor
Like twisted vines that grow
That hide and swallow mansions whole
And dim the light of an already faded prima donna"-Metallica's The Memory Remains
"I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure" - Aerosmith's Dont Wanna Miss A Thing
Now here's an example from Dr. Dre's Forgot About Dre
"One day I was walkin by
Wit a walkmen on
When I caught a guy givin me an awkward eye
And strangled him off in the parkin lot wit his Karl Kani"
Yeah that's real good, inspiring lyrics there
I'm done proving a point for now, but please by all means prove me wrong. PanterA rulz!

"It ain't my fall
It ain't my call
It ain't my bitch
It ain't my bitch"
That is some Metallica song.
"Knowin you the best part of life, do I have the right to take yours
Cause I created you, irresponsibly
Subconciously knowin the act I was a part of
The start of somethin, I'm not ready to bring into the world
Had myself believin I was sterile
I look into mother's stomach, wonder if you are a boy or a girl
Turnin this woman's womb into a tomb
But she and I agree, a seed we don't need
You would've been much more than a mouth to feed
But someone, I woulda fed this information I read
to someone, my life for you I woulda had to leave
Instead I lead you to death"
That is a Common/Lauren Hill song
No way can you generealize in music. Don't take lyrics in out of context either, makes you look like a fool. -

Notice there you have taken lyrics from 'some' Metallica song as you stated yourself but took lyrics from a 'common' Lauren Hill song."It ain't my fall
It ain't my call
It ain't my bitch
It ain't my bitch"
That is some Metallica song.
"Knowin you the best part of life, do I have the right to take yours

The Metallica lyrics are not common lyrics for them. You have purposefully chosen lyrcis that back up your argument. The lyrics in Lauren Hill's song are common for her as you say, so to make a balanced argument you need to take common Metallica lyrics. This you haven't done in an attempt to fool everyone in to thinking the majority of their songs are in the same vein. Which they are not.
No way can you generealize in music. Don't take lyrics in out of context either, makes you look like a fool.
Just what I was about to say... -

Wow.
The people who think rap/hip-hop is only saying words over a computerized beat are complete fucking imbeciles.
The people who think heavy metal is only incoherant screaming and headbanging are complete fucking imbeciles.
That is all. -
