No. Just Didn't have special effects and stuff like nowadays, take thirteen ghosts for an example excorcist doesn't match up to it because TG looks very authentic and the excorcist doesn'tOh yeah, and The Exorcist was totally fucking weak, people from the 70's were pussies.

Yeah Exorcist isn't actually that scarey, but the fact that it's based upon a true story is creepy. Also someone died making the film, the guy who jumped out the window at the end missed the mat! It's true! -

Same here. I didn't really understand it the first time I watched it when it came out on video a long time ago. Then I read the book, watched the movie again, and then I couldn't believe I wasted money renting it. The book is a lot weirder than the movie. Michael Crichton's books are too good.Sphere totally freaked me out though

I never understood what was supposed to be so good about the Shining, let alone being scary. Someone care to explain? All I see is typical Stephen King where they throw in the whole "shining" thing for no apparant reason, then have Jack Nicholsen act crazy.
The Exorcist I didn't find very scary, but it was a little and it was weird how similar it is to actual stories of people being possessed. It was probably good in its time.
I though the Ring was a very good movie, but was barely scary. Signs I found tremendously overrated. It's another movie with aliens, just with two parts that make you jump and better acting and directing than most movies, but still not fantastic.
The rest of the movies mentioned I think I could count as at least a little scary. I especially find corny scary movies from around the 80's to be the worst. My third favorite scary movie is Pet Semetary. My personal scariest movie is the remake of House on Haunted Hill, but I'm sure no one will ever agree with me. I never understood why people hate that one so much and like 13 Ghosts, which is the same movie with less plot. Oh, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers used to scare me a lot, as did the Blob at one point . I haven't seen a lot of good scary movies recently. Oh, and whoever said that thing about movies making you jump is totally correct. -

Holloween II,III,IV,and V ,just creepy
No. Just no.
Firstly learn how to fucking spell Halloween, that goes for a few other people I’ve noticed too.
Secondly don't ever try and mention Halloween with out mentioning the original, which is the scariest and arguably best (close call with 4).
Thirdly, have you even seen Halloween 3? If you haven't then I will forgive you for mentioning it in the same sentence as the others in the series, but if you have then there is no excuse. I know a lot of people find all the Halloween films utter shit but number 3 takes the cake, it doesn't even involve Michael Myers for fucks sake! What’s a Halloween film without the star?!
Anyway...
Can someone please tell me what's so great about the ring? There are so many holes in the story line I thought someone had lost a few pages of the script. Maybe I need to see the original Japanese version because the Hollywood remake doesn't do much for me. It's creepy in parts and has a lot of shock moments but it's not overly scary I wouldn't say.
To be honest I can't really put my finger on a film that has scared me the most. Alien is a contender, I have had dreams involving Halloween that have been scary but the film its self isn't too bad. Really it's easier to pick moments from films that have scared me then the films them selves. -

I thought Darkness Falls was shite...The "Friday the 13th" Series was cool though... -

You hit the nail right on the head there TPM. Why are dreams (well nightmares actually but no matter) scary when 'scary movies' usually aren't? Because when you're dreaming (typically) you don't know that you're dreaming. The experience is real to you and so naturally you fear for your life. Scary movies don't work if they don't suck you in and make you a part of the experience. Most scary movies have designated 'scary scenes' and then some release but the problem is that once you releave the tension the audience is no longer sucked in. They remember that they're just watching a movie. If you want your movie to truly be scary you have to make it atmospheric. You have to draw people in and make them believe it. For example, if you didn't know that Blair Witch Project was just a movie, if you believed the stories told in the advertising that it was real, it might have actually been scary. Because you'd actually be afraid for the people on the screen. Alien is big on atmosphere so that explains why a lot of people find it scary. I agree, that is a very scary movie but you have to allow yourself to get sucked in. If you sit down and go "okay, scare me" you probably will be disappointed because you're too busy thinking about watching a 'scary movie' to actually be sucked in and get scared. So in summary (this is pathetic isn't it), for a movie to be scary it should be like a dream where the fear is real because the images seem real. Atmosphere is the key, not cheap musical scores or fancy visual tricks.I have had dreams involving Halloween that have been scary but the film its self isn't too bad. Really it's easier to pick moments from films that have scared me then the films them selves.

haha... ed.
tis true, atmosphere makes the movie. That is also why the first Halloween was the scariest, because it really sucked you, and kept you in suspense the entire time, up until the end.
By the way, my mom rented a rare anime movie that had what she thought was kimba the white lion. So we sat down to watch it, and were greeted with deja vu. Apparently, this king leo flick is what inspired the writers for "Lion King". Some of the imagery and character conventions and premises were EXACT. And I checked the date... it was made before Lion King. Now THATS scary... goddamnit disney...
(on a side note, that king leo flick was the sappiest thing i ever did see... ever) -

Hello.
Well...
As far as being scared is concerned...only one movie has ever given me nightmares.
That movie would be The Fog...
I realize that today, even, when I watch it, it is a very laughable experience, but when I saw it when I was five years old, it really freaked me out. Not even IT hit me as hard as The Fog.
As far as good frightening movies nowadays go...
These are some good frightfests...
- The Ring [aka Ringu] (the original Japanese one that is)
- The Ring (American remake, not as good though)
- Dark Water (as mantis pointed out)
- Gothika (saw it last night...filled with cheap scares...the ending is insane)
- Boogeyman (new movie I saw a sceener for;don't miss this one)
- Alien (...)
- When a Stranger Calls (a very old concept movie that started countless urban legends, still scary as hell)
- Nightmare (obscure slasher flick with a ton of scares and a wicked plot, good luck finding it)
There are countless more, and I will be writing a series of articles detailing The Scariest Movies of All Time, The Best Horror Movies of All Time and The Worst Horror Movies of All Time. I am doing this as a tutorial to help the unsuspecting crowd of people get their money's worht when they rent and go to see Horror and Suspense/Terror movies.
