General Chat / Top 5 Videogames

    1. Fallout (and Fallout 2) - A wonderful atmosphere that really started my obsession with all forms of post-apocalyptic media. There are great characters in these games but it's really the location (a post-nuclear wasteland California) that is the best character and the reason to keep playing. If these games could be translated into a movie it would be far and away the best post-apocalyptic movie ever made.

    2. Interstate '76 - This for me is the epitome of what games can offer. Wonderful characters, an interesting locale, and a whole lotta style. I love the soundtrack, I still listen to it all the time. Another game that I would really want to see as a movie. Not a shitty movie but one that is faithful most of all to the spirit of the game. I even watched some old 70s cop shows because of playing this game.

    3. Final Fantasy VII - It takes so long to finish these games that FFVII is the only one in the series I've actually completed. A great cast of characters (even if most of them recede into the background halfway through the game) and more importantly a fully realized world that is a joy to explore. I got more enjoyment out of this than most movies I've seen. Really a game that everyone should have a chance to play.

    4. Deus Ex - If it's atmosphere you want this game has it in truckloads. Imagine every conspiracy theory is true and the world is on the brink of becoming a global doctatorship under the power of secret societies and supercomputers. Everything about this game imerses you into the world and makes you want to keep playing.

    5. Buried in Time - Yes it's a graphical adventure game, which to many people means it isn't really a game, but this one actually has both a compelling story (well sortof) and very nice historical locations to explore. It's also about time travel which makes it cool automatically. One of the most enjoyable games I've ever played.

Those are my favorite games because of their atmosphere. In one way or another they all turned me on to new interests. There are also a good number of other games I enjoyed for the same reason that I couldn't fit into the top 5 and some other simpler games that were just good fun. I never have time to play any of these anymore, but they all deserve a mention:

Mario 64 - It's addictive fun. Simple and complex at the same time.
Bushido Blade - Love those swords. Yeesss.
TIE Fighter - You want replay value? This game was unmatched. Back when Star Wars didn't suck. :(
Starcraft/Warcraft series - Tons of character. Fun to play.
Command & Conquer - More thrilling than any other RTS games with great characters (Kane) and good old tanks.
The Dig - An adventure game with a great story.
Full Throttle - Bikers and heavy metal, it doesn't get much better than that.
The Curse of Monkey Island - THE pirate game. Hell, it's THE pirate anything. Arrr.
Half-Life - Great immersive atmosphere. Revolutionary design. Tons of replay value.
Chrono Trigger - Great characters, music, everything. An RPG that's much more fun than tedious.

And tons of other games I'm forgetting. The only game I ever play nowadays though is RCT and I wouldn't even consider it a game anymore. My experience with RCT is too different from my experience with any other game to directly compare them. I've played it much longer than I could imagine playing anything else.

  • BchillerR%s's Photo
    1) Conquers Bad Fur Day [Best game of all time.]

    2) Tony Hawk Pro Skater Series [The goal's are really easy, but after you complete them, free skate is just fun, especially in Kona THPS 4]

    3) SSX - Tricky

    4) Mortal Kombat - Deadly Alliance [I used to be really obsessed with this game, may just be the best fighting game ever]

    5) Mario Tennis / Golf [Fun game's which you can't really get bored of.]

Other good games are : Starcraft, Warcraft, Sonic Series, Mario [RPG] series, Diablo I and II, Halo, Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3, 4, and the F-Zero games.

Note: I didn't mention RCT2 because it's quite obvious I like it, or I wouldn't be at these forums.

heh, my list is mostly Mario stuff...

    1. RCT series (sans WW) - Obviously.
    2. Super Mario RPG (SNES) - Oh my...amazing. Simply amazing. While the storlyline couldn't be more different from classic Mario (except for maybe Mario Bros. 2 with Wart), this is easily the best Mario game ever made. And that says a lot. There are tons of easter eggs and hidden things to find, it's almost impossible to say you've beaten the game. Plus, Bowser's a good guy!!!!
    3. Super Mario 64 (N64) - I think Ed describes this the best. It's simple, yet don't expect any 6-year olds to beat you in this game.
    4. Paper Mario (N64) - The sequel to SMRPG. While it was a bit dissapointing, I still loved it.
    5. Super Mario World (SNES) - Fun fun fun. Haven't played this in a while though...I'll go do that now...LOL

Honourable mentions: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Mario Bros. 3, Donkey Kong 2, Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Mario Tennis, etc.

That plumber was more than a video game character: he was a pop culture icon. ;)X

halo is such a fun game. it should probably be higher on my list seeing as its the one i play the most now. i mean it really is the best multiplayer game ever. ive never done it before but if you have to xboxs and two tvs u can play somehting like 8-16 player which would be insane. cant wait for halo 2

I think Halo isn't on that many lists because it's an X-Box only game (at least until it's ported to PC). I'm still bitter at Microsoft for stealing our (pc gamers) potential game of the year and using it to sell their X-Boxes. That just wasn't right.

1-PS2 GTA3 i love this game, running from cops, stealing cars, shoting everone and anything in your way, a hell of a game

2-PS2 NBA live 2003 give me kobe and LA and i will beat anyone

3-PS2 Madden 2003 the drills are lots of fun, and football games are always a blast.

4-PS2 NBA Street "Dinners served" "Busted rim" "that rebound went on for days" GAMEBRAKER! lol love that game

5-SNES Super Mario World (#4) Old School ya gota love it
  • Rage%s's Photo
No order, I love them all equally!

    Rollercoaster Tycoon 1(LL) + 2 - Of course!

GTA series - Come on..... Its awesome!

Deus Ex - Kinda a 1st person RPG, One the best games ever!

The Sims w/ All expansions - Does get boring sometimes but its great!

Halo - Possibly the greatest Game ever!!!!!!!!!

(I dunno If Black & White should be there instead of The Sims)

ok... since my list could never be accurate due to my liking of too many genres, heres a top 5 of each of 7 genres:

    I. rpgs

    1) Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross- best rpg of all time, beating out xenogears and saga and all the FF's. Best music in an rpg, best battle system, ever (concerning CT), and some of the best character/map system designs in the history of rpgs. And, The best story in an rpg, ever. Best of anything IN an rpg, really (though CT is better in terms of story while CC is better in terms of character design).
2)Xenogears & Xenosaga - character design is where it's at. Yummy music. And a good story. Yup.
    3) Final Fantasy VI & Final Fantasy VII - complex story and complex characters and easily learned but heavily customizable controls. If i had to pick, 6 is better.
    4) Earthbound & Mother - the rpg's that time tends to forget, or atleast wishes it could. The fact that I get to fight pogo-punks, and hooligans is just too hilarious to not love (that and things toting psychic powers are awesome).
    5) super mario RPG- really a big change from what was going on at the time, and a real nice game to play.

    II. RTS

    1) Total Annihilation: Core Contigency - the epitome of the genre in terms of what it strives to achieve. The way you go about building and attacking and defending and counter attacking and flanking etc. is all very strategic. Throw in some awesome classical music, a unique 'energy' system, and some of the most versatile attacking and defending options, and yeah this game tops everything else.
    2) Starcraft - Best map customizability in an rpg. TA may have come first, but starcraft revolutionized the way one looks at custom maps. The trigger system is love.
    3) Warcraft games - these are what got me into rts. I myself started with warcraft 2, and found it to be really fun (I also played it multiplayer on my dad's network at the time, that was the best). Warcraft 3 brought me back to the genre after my starcraft map-making fetish had died down.
    4) Red Alert 1&2 - I don't like these as much as say, TA, but they are unique none-the-less.
    5) Tiberian Sun - definitely not as good as the Red Alert games, but definitely up there.

    III. Fighter

    1) Guilty Gear X2(XX in japan) - most advanced fighting game ever. Best music of any fighter, and the most unique hybrid of classic fighter tactics and new-age cancels/counters I've ever seen. The strategies for this game are endless and endlessly complex. Absolutely beautiful graphics and outstanding character design, best in any game. And for a fighter, a brilliant story mode.
    2) Bloody Roar 3 - most people don't even know this game, and if they do, they tend to dismiss it as a button-mashers game. It isn't though. The confusion comes from the combo system; there is none. What there is, however, is a pressure string system. Combos aren't meant to connect, if the person has the right move at the right time, they can escape your pressure and retaliate. On the same token, you could cancel into a counter of their retaliation, and they could cancel you out with their forcing move, etc. Not many scrubs play this game, which is something good in and of itself. Did I also mention that the graphics and character design are really sweet? Oh yes, and the fighting styles from person to person have no "universal" feel, its all pretty individual.
    3) CvS 1&2 - Great graphics and an amusing switch fighter. Quite amusing. Nice amount of complexity, nothing close to GGX2 or BR3 though.
    4) Tekken 3 - I've warmed up to this recently, as I'm just getting the hang of the clumsy combo system, which is by far the most priority whoring combo system, ever. But the characters are very well designed, and the gameplay is complex enough to warrant a place here.
    5) Street Fighter Alpha 1,2&3 - smooth graphics and a straight up fighter. No complexity here cept maybe a healthy 'reversal cancel into super' every once in awhile. Other than that, a good straight up fighting game. If I could pick 6, the next game on the list would be the samurai showdown series.

    IV. FPS

    1) HL:CS, TFC, OF, DOD, etc... - revolutionized the genre of first person shooter. Guns and strats etc. I'd love to be able to play CS again, but my computer hates it =(
    2) Halo - awesome game for multiplayer, that is all.
    3) Quake series - this is the "nerd" series, the one all the heavy breathing dorks have been playing for ages. It's quite funny how many "best in the world" people I manage to meet. Despite the horribly elitist douchebags this game calls a "fanbase", its still a fun game, and the hook shot rocks.
    4) Unreal Tournament & 2003 - I call this the "fantasy" shooter, and hell, it is. Fantasy guns in fantasy settings with fantasy physics. The game is fun though, and capture the flag and the football like thing have definite uses in curing boredom.
    5) Doom series - don't knock it, this thing still rocks you jag-arses. This put the first true "story" in an fps. Plus secrets and easter eggs are fun.

    V. Action-rpgs

    1) Mario & Zelda Series - from beginning to end, they are still the quality surpassing most in their genre on every platform, everytime. This grouping also includes kingdom hearts, as I don't classify it as a regular rpg, its much more zelda-like than final-fantasy-like.
    2) Sonic and Megaman Series - Sonic is love ^^; (as is rockman, oh yeah!). The underground fandom for these games is way scary, but games like "sonic 3 & knuckles" and "megaman 5" are where it's at.
    3) Fallout series & Tomb Raider 1 - Just look at what coaster Ed said about this, that is what I would put. As for tomb raider, I just liked the first one alot. It was really a good fantasy puzzle game, fascinating stuff.
    4) Grand Theft Auto Series - I don't NEED to say anything about this, hehe.
    5) Secrets of Mana series & Terranigma - yup, the battle system is awesome for these. If i had a number 6, it'd be toejam & earl, cuz its such a weird game.

    VI. Simulations

    1) RCT1&2 - fuggin duh.
    2) Railroad Tycoon 2 - really like this for some reason, don't ask. I think it's the stock market thing. You can either win straight up by having the most money making things, or you could latch yourself onto an endless cycle of buying your competitors out of their stocks.
    3) Simcity series - from the original to #4, THE strategy simulation.
    4) Gran Turismo - racing sims count as sims. And this one is top notch.
    5) 1942... - you know... ;)

    VII. Strategy/Puzzle

    1) Worms series - coolness in a can.
    2) Wetrix - too addictive.
    3) Bust-a-move series - too cool.
    4) puzzle fighter series - yummy.
    5) tetris - still the bomb.

    aaaaaaaand, I'm spent.
