General Chat / Why does everyone hate RCT2?

  • Coaster Ed%s's Photo
Hmm, well this is certainly a relevant discussion around here and I can see why people would support either side. The more RCT2 parks I've seen the more I've come to realize that the biggest difference between the two is experience. RCT2 is missing some key options that RCT1 has however, RCT1 has quite a few limitations that people have overcome over the years and given time the various advantages and disadvantages in RCT2 will be better exploited. That's why I say that the difference between the two is roughly equivalent to different art medium. Whether you paint with watercolors or oil paints, the quality of the product ultimately comes down to the creativity of the artist. A good artist knows how to turn disadvantages into advantages. I think the same is true for RCT2. Some may prefer RCT2 and some may prefer RCT1 just as different painters prefer different medium but the skill of the artist will shine no matter how they choose to convey their creativity.

That's how I feel about the general issue. On a more personal level, I find a lot to like about both games. I've been playing RCT1 a lot longer so it will take quite a bit of time for my comfort level in RCT2 to approach what it is in RCT1 but that's to be expected and a problem everybody has to face. The reason I continue to use RCT1 is not because I think it's better nor is it entirely because of the comparitive ease with which I build in RCT1. The biggest reason I still use RCT1 is that I find it easier to express myself creatively with the tools available in RCT1. I feel that currently, I personally can be more creative in RCT1. I believe that to be true for myself, everyone else has to make their own judgement. I appreciate the possibilities of RCT2 and will certainly try them out sometime in the future but for the moment I continue to prefer RCT1 as the best way to express myself as a parkmaker. I'm grateful that this site continues to support RCT1 parks so that I have a forum to share my work just as RCT2 builders do. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Whether you're building in RCT1 or RCT2 you are a parkmaker and this community is proud to support your chosen means of expression.

    PS - I'm back! :)

if everyone had this take on life, there would be no point to forums like these.

I'm glad someone said that. Well said Nate.

    These forums are for....*shock*....discussion. Yay!

Someone said something about deleting unneeded landscapes/scenarios? How does that work?
  • Blitz%s's Photo
i too, would like to know that mantis.

    onto subject...

i find that both rct1 and rct2 have their limitations.

So, most people that like rct1 like it because they haven't figured out the work arounds for rct2 yet, and most people that like rct2 like it for the novelty and freshness of options that are new to the series.

I say the real difference here is infact, wear and tear. Like Ed said.
But, I feel there is a difference in the nature of how the "walls" of these two games come down.

rct1's limitations are lacking purely in options, making workarounds of it the ingenuity of combining certain different elements together to create new elements (hence paths on buildings, ghost tunnel windows, waterfalls, etc).

rct2's limitations, however, are both lack of known workarounds AND the lacking of "complete" options. These "incomplete" options exist inside the game already(scenery limit, lack of a "clean-up" after zero-ing clearances, evolution of custom scenery, etc).

Because of this, the nature of bringing down these barriers is decidely different. A game is a program, can be understood, and can be hacked. All it takes is time.

I just think it is interesting that while (most)barriers with rct1 had to be broken with ingenuity and creativity, rct2 barriers are much more tangible and require only work to get past.

That rant was probably all nonsense, but I'll post it anyway I guess.

Someone said something about deleting unneeded landscapes/scenarios? How does that work?

The way I (would) do that is speed through the scenario editor as fast as possible and when it got time to save the scenario, just right click all the scenario files and delete them. I dont know anyother way of accessing them.......... when you open up the 'landscape' and 'scenario' folders just by going through 'My Documents', nothing shows up.

As for the current discussion, I am RCT2 and RCT2 is me. No further comments.

On a side note......... I never knew you were so deep Blitz :D

Have I posted in this thread yet? Oh well, I'll type this out anyway.

I'm an rct2 guy. I sucked in rct1...horribly, but now rct2 is givinging me more of an open door.

What I love about rct2....hm....2 things.

1- Toon Towers Objects. Like I said earlier in this thread ( I just lookd to see if I had posted in here...lol) I refuse now to play without his walls after trying to do so with MP. His objects bring so many new choices that it makes the game that much better.

2-It hasn't been done. Well, ok, alot of things HAVE been done. But rct2 gives a greater opportunity to do something new and original. It can be a different kind of ride, or a new style of architecture. The ability is there. Not alot of things have happened this way, but look at it this way. Almost everything has been done in rct1. Sure, new, original things will pop up once in a while, but most of it has been done by someone, somewhere. Probably a few people. Usually a shitload of people.

With rct2, it opens up a world to do things that wern't possible with rct1. Sure, you can do things like rct1, one since rct2 is just now catching on, less people have done it, leaving more to be found and made for the first time.

I prefer rct2, and haven't played rct1 since rct2 came out. I've only brought it out to look at parks finshed. Rct2 all the way for me.

It seems to me that some people are seriously misjudging the potential for creativity in RCT1. The fact of the matter is, the potential for creativity in RCT1 is THE SAME as the potential of RCT2. In RCT1 you have to build your buildings in a certain style to look good but the same is true of RCT2. There are certain buildings in RCT1 that it is not possible to make in RCT2 currently and the same with RCT2 buildings in RCT1. There are some coasters in RCT1 that you cannot make in RCT2 and vice versa. What RCT2 represents right now is potential. RCT1 has been developed to death but there are still unlimited possibilities if people were only willing to try something new. RCT2 on the other hand forces you to make something new because of the new architecture system. A more accurate statement might be that it's easier to create something new in RCT2 because it hasn't been out nearly as long. More RCT2 runner-ups means that more people are playing RCT2 not that RCT1 is obsolete. Given time RCT2 parks are going to start looking the same too if people don't continue pressing the game system further. I don't object to people liking RCT2 at all. I just object to this idea that RCT1 is in any way outdated because it isn't. There are still unexplored hacking options as seen in SWA and GOD and Fatha's upcoming Ports of Call. There are still themes nobody has tried before as seen in Erwindale Forest. Whenever anybody suggests RCT1 is running out of steam I will argue every time because it has nothing to do with the game becoming obsolete and everything to do with the community moving on to RCT2. It's self-fulfilling prophecy. I support RCT2 and enjoy many of the new parks coming out for each game but never underestimate the power of creativity. There is still limitless potential in either game for people willing to take some risks and try something new. If RCT1 does die it will only be because people lose faith in it and that would be a mistake in my opinion because it has a lot to offer. All I'm saying and have always said and will continue to say is that there shouldn't even be a rivalry between the two. All that does is break up the community.

I just wanted to add that iris has said SWA is his #1 park and that would presumably make Euroscape #2. That's always subject to change of course but the point is that both games are great and great parkmakers will make great parks in either game. There are things in SWA I've never seen before and things in Euroscape I've never seen before. People obviously have their reasons for prefering one over the other but 'RCT1 is old and sucks' should not be one of them nor should 'RCT2 sucks'. Now I'm just rambling I know so I'll shut up.

Well, I was kinda bad at RCT1, I could never really make anything uniqu so i relied on GIB, Biant boomerangs, stand ups that are inverted track, hacked impulses, etc. Now i have a compeletely new window, and I like it. Go RCT2!

    lack of a "clean-up" after zero-ing clearances

Acctually, there is a new version of the 8 Cars trainer that has the Restore clearances option.

Yes there is! And I'm very happy about it. However, the Zero clearances in the 8 cars trainer doesn't seem to work properly. However, you can zero in the beast then restore with 8 cars and things seem to work just fine.
  • CoasterkidMWM%s's Photo
Hmmm I'll have to try that...

i dont like rct2 cause i cant work around the limits... there are too many objects to go with one theme in order to make it look good. In RCT1 you already have everything and IMO it is easier to work with.

    just my opinion though
