General Chat / Radiohead

apparently they tried to make creep the worst song they could to take the piss - like the guitarist put in the string muted bit before the last chorus to muck it up. so yes, it is crap.

I've always liked radiohead, but then of course, I'm 10 years older than most of you, so that would place me at your age when "Creep" came out.

Is it a decent song? Yes. Was it overplayed? Of course. Is it radiohead's best song artistically? Not by a long shot.

I'd place their albums in this order as I like them:

    OK Computer
    The Bends
    Amnesiac
    Kid A
Hail To The Thief (I'm still getting used to it...)
    Pablo Honey

OKC is one of the most brilliant albums I've ever heard. One song flows onto the next almost flawlessly....even the Engineering hiccup is barely noticeable, and not objectionable. "Paranoid Android", "Subterranean Homesick Alien", "Let Down"...all wonderful....though "Exit Music (For A Film)" still is the best, right above "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" and "Life in a Glass House".

    Electioneering 'hiccup'? What's that?

I like Climbing Up the Walls and Subterranean Homesick Alien the best. But all of it's great. All of it.

But Idioteque is the best song ;) I'm still trying to find someone who I can borrow Kid A off.

    I agree.
Idioteque (Kid A) and Paranoid Android (OK Computer) are the best songs from the two albums.

Everyone likes Amnesiac better, but I don't get it. I thought it didn't have flow (nor did HTTT), and was kinda schitzophrenic. Though, the 1-2 punch of "Like Spinning Plates" and the phucking fenomenal "Life in a Glasshouse" is probably the best ending to an album in a long time.

I never said it was their best track, I said it was their only noteworthy track. All of their other songs work better in the context of the album, or within a live show, than they do on their own.

Creep is the only Radiohead song I'd truly call a "single". Its the only song I can listen to, on its own, without anything else (by Radiohead, or otherwise) comming on before and/or after it.

A lot of their songs work great within a larger context, only Creep works great on its own.
  • Jellybones%s's Photo
Actually, most of Pablo Honey would have worked as singles...it was a radio-minded Britpop/altrock album, which happened to be big at the time of its release.
  • mantis%s's Photo
I should probably listen to Amnesiac again just to hear those last two songs....I really liked the first two, too.

Shame it's on tape, though, cos I'd prefer it on cd. Oh well.

I like Creep. Especially the quick judder of guitar before the chorus comes in. It's cool.

I now have all of the OK Computer songs merged into one on endless repeat in my brain. It's quite annoying/pleasant/confusing.

And I repeat, what's the Electioneering 'blip'?

But every other song on Pablo Honey sucks...

Pablo Honey: decent album, but nothing thrilling, hence why it is still last on my list. There are worse albums by "better" bands.

Creep/Singles issue: A lot might say that "High and Dry" or "Karma Police" were fairly successful singles for their albums, and much easier a listen for the common audience (fickle public).

Electioneering/Blip/hiccup: I hate music/movie reviews, and the need to categorize everything. It seems a bit anal and pretentious at times, but I guess the press needs their jobs too, so whatever. The point is, in many reviews, and at times for me (only sometimes), the song "Electioneering" on OKC seems a bit out of place-a rarity that I agree with the press.

Starting from "Airbag", and continuing thru the next 5 songs, the album transitions fairly smoothly. The atmosphere seems to change drastically with "Electioneering", and while this isn't a bad thing, it occaisionally does seem to stick out a bit. True, "Fitter Happier", a computer voiced verse (that isn't really a song) initiates the switchup, but for some reason to me, the hard driving tempo and guitar work on the song in question is a bit too obvious. Indeed "Android" has it's moments, but it kind of lulls you to sleep before exploding, whereas this one just jumps from the start. Considering all of the songs after this ("Climbing" and beyond) are rather mellow, it strikes me as odd.

Hmm....Mantis....did that make sense at all?

Oh, and "Idioteque" is my fave on KID A also...it's just weird enough to get me, and that beat.... :w00t:

    Kai :yup:
  • mantis%s's Photo
Yes I get you. But I like it because of that - catches you unawares :)

And I think it's part of the reason why Climbing up the Walls works so well....it's a terrific come-down after Electioneering.

Idioteque does, indeed, have a killer beat. And performed live at Glastonbury it was captivating.
  • Caddie Gone Mad%s's Photo
I listened to Idioteque and Paranoid Android, and I liked neither.

I guess I'm not down with the Radiohead trend thing.
  • cg?%s's Photo
Idioteque has a good beat? Seems like one of the worst examples of Glitch/Minimalist Electronica (ala: Clicks And Cuts Volumes 1 & 2), to me.

Of course there's a great Radiohead pop song laid over it, but still.

There are much better examples of the same kind of beat, all over the place. I mean, fuck, even Autreche (the worlds biggest Aphex Twin wanna-be) can do that shit better.

And certainly Aphex Twin could too, but he hasn't done that, unless I've missed something.

I mean he ditched his whole Drum N' Bass thing, and is, um, somewhere right now. But not Glitch. Drukgs sucked anywho, regardless of what kind of music it is.

But the videos from Drukgs kick-ass... so... yeah...

And I agree with Kai, all music reviews are, are "cool" hipster idiots (like myself) trying to prove how much cooler they are than you, and formerly "cool", former hipster, but still idiot, old-fucks who haven't realized they have since stop being cool and hip, doing much the same thing as those who are cool and hip and shit.

Its all bullshit. Some French Newwave idiot said the best means to criticize a movie, is to make another one. I say that every last Post-Rock band took this cue, and gave King Crimson's 80s material two thumbs up.

    Yup.

And then they masturbated all over the pretty covers... whatever... I'm tired... help me...

Caddie Gone Mad: Radiohead doesn't have horns and you expect to like it? Idiot. Go and listen to some pretty horn-based bit of lunacy... like the new LTJ release... wait... there aren't horns on that... and it sucks even more than their others... damn...

Horns suck ass. This is the divine truth of all things, most certainly.
  • Caddie Gone Mad%s's Photo
Then why do I like AC/DC, Van Halen, O.A.R, Soulive, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Kinks, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, cg?

LTJ is a horrible band, by the way...

And I beg to differ on the subject of horns sucking. What makes them suck cg? The fact that you can only listen to something made by a computer without moaning about how bad it is?
  • Jellybones%s's Photo
What the hell? The National Anthem, Motion Picture Soundtrack, Life in a Glasshouse, and We Suck Young Blood all have horns...well, real horns. Not ska horns.

Also, Electioneering is one of my fav. songs by Radiohead. It had been the last balls-out rocker track that Radiohead had until the awesome 2+2=5 came along.
  • cg?%s's Photo
Oh, sush up Caddie Gone Mad. I was joking, and completely and totally out-of-my-mind. Things like that happen when you can't get to sleep, no matter what the fuck you do.

Moreover, I could easily say that you like all those bands because you lack taste. And, you know what? I'd be right.

    Moving on...

While Radiohead does feature horns, its not like a regular thing nor is it a major aspect. No matter how many horns they use, Radiohead uses them more for their sound, than for anything else.

I mean, horns in a Radiohead track are of no more importance than low-level ambient electronic hums in a Radiohead track.

And although, Kid A and Amnesiac featured those low-level ambient electronic far more prominetly than the Guitars/Bass/Drum set up of the typical Rock or Pop group, they've never made a full on Horn-based album.

Or have they? Don't quite recall one...
  • Caddie Gone Mad%s's Photo
Please define this "taste" you speak of.

I don't get it, I don't have the correct opinion? How is that possible?

    You confuse me.
  • deanosrs%s's Photo
everyones entitled to their opinion, thats why modern music is so diverse, i dont think its fair to declare that ur taste is perfect, cos for other people it may be far from it.
  • Jellybones%s's Photo

Silly Caddie. You've forgotten who you're talking to, I think.

Also...Radiohead has never made a full horns-based album, but they've never really made an album that follows one path of sound and whatnot, save Pablo Honey and perhaps The Bends. All of Radiohead's songs use different instruments and have a different sound to them, which makes them the best fucking band of our time.
  • cg?%s's Photo
You like both Van Halen, AC/DC, and Ska. Quite frankly, as I'm sure most anyone would agree, that proves that you have no taste. Your opinions are your opinions, yes, and mine are mine.

I feel your "opinion" of what is good music, is completely and totally wrong. So I chose to express my opinion, because you suck and shit.

Really though... Van Halen? Van Halen? You scare me.

And O.A.R. are the most boring fucking band to have ever walked the face of the earth (although, Yanni barely beats them out in the general category for Musical Artists as a whole).

AC/DC are just ugly, no-talent idiots singing about sex, yet I doubt they could actually get any.

And then Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers come in third, for the most boring musical artist category. Who comes fourth and fifth? Probably Enya and, uh, um... Enya.

So who's left? The Kinks? Ah, well, the Kinks are a decent enough Pop band, I guess. Just not my style...
