Micro Madness 2019 / MM3 R1 Wrap-up

Round 1 Wrap-up

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say round 1 was pretty intense. We received the perfect amount of 64 entries, often of ridiculous high quality. The matches were often exciting. As is tradition for micro madness, we saw a few new players like hoobaroo and mamarillas causing upsets, old players like RCTFAN and KaiBueno making a comeback, and some established players like Faas and alex missing the cut... 32 people will play in Round 2, in eight freshly formed groups. For details, see the updated bracket below!



Seventeen players (not sixteen, due to a tie) that placed third in their Round 1 groups are eligible as replacements in Round 2: RCT2Day, CoasterCreator9, Ride6, alex, Mattk48, phann, CHE, SWAGTITTIES, L3mmy, In:Cities, 6crazy6king6, Chocotopian, BBT, FredD, Faas, JimmyLaessig and Terry Inferno.

The Round 2 deadline is April 28th 2019 at 23:59 GMT, 7:59 PM EST, 24:59 CET. Due to how long it took for some R1 groups to be released and concluded, the players who advanced from Group A to Group H will get a 48 hour deadline extension. This also applies to the replacements from those groups.

I think there's going to be a lot of highly competitive fights for 1st, and a lot less competitive fights for 2nd, but still lots of strong matches all around.  Most hyped to see Cocoa vs bsg, Liam vs Tolsimir, Q6, Xtreme vs Jaguar, and dirt vs itm.  And to see if all the upsets can deliver a second impressive entry.  

Q1's gunna have everyone bringing out their big guns. Cocoa and BSG likely in a fight for 1st, but mamarillas and sulakke have both proved to be creative, and could continue their streak with a surprise upset.

Q2 looks interesting. If Cam's statement about being drained on height holds true, it could be anyone's game. If Cam does pull through with an equally stacked micro as he did last round, I expect he'll move on relatively easily, with a 2nd place from either Stoksy or MK, both whom I expect to bring strong entries.

Q3 is going to have a strong, rich, and dense entry from AVC similar to his r1 entry. Wouter's going to have something fun, but probably not as personal and moving as his r1 entry. I expect it'll take second nonetheless. Scoop and Otter both have the capacity for strong surprising entries that could upset this prediction as well.

Q4 seems like it could be anyone's game. I've got a lot of faith in Leon from his strong r1 entry, but i wouldn't be surprised if he's unable to deliver something as epic again. Ling, Roy, and Jappy all have potential to take second behind a strong Leon entry, or compete for first with a mediocre Leon entry.

Q5 is going to be Tenochtitlan 2: Ecclectic Boogaloo. If there's not a battle between ships, pyramids, conquistadors, or open-market food stalls, I'll be very upset. Looking forward to the continued rise of MrTycoonCoaster and Wacked as well, both are capable of strong entries.

Q6 seems like another really interesting matchup. Steve's minimalist take on micros may take a substantial share of the votes. Recurious' penchant for interesting fantasy concepts makes him a great fit for the micro format and able to take the W as well. Gdb and hoobaroo have both shown clever ideas and strong executions in this contest and/or in the past so I can't count either of them out either. This match looks like the closest and hardest to call.

Q7 Jaguar's got something to prove, so I expect we'll see something phenomenal from him. Xtreme gave us an incredibly impressive r1 entry and everyone's eager to see his follow-up. I think it's safe to assume that while Disney and RWE can produce some impressive entries, it looks like their road dead-ends here.

Q8 is my group so my review here is clearly going to be biased. Mav's got potential for something great, but I fear he plays pretty safe and if he doesn't take a risk here he's unlikely to move on. Bubbsy took some shit from the community for his last entry, which hopefully hasn't soured him on this competition. I know he's capable of strong original works, and one here could upset the favorites. I think most people probably expect Dirt and I to move on, as we've both shown fantastic works within the micro format, but I think we're both likely to take risks that may or may not pan out with the audience very well, so while this match may seem difficult for Bubbsy and Mav, things could shake up their way.

 

Am I going to compete with the Q5 players? Is that what I understood? OMG, I'm toast.
I have no idea what to do.
Losing the competition ok, no problem, will be fun again.
I do not want to make an ugly, strange or ridiculous micro park. (i panicked)

1. toss-up between me and bsg I think, but I'm behind on building and sulakke and mamarilla are serious threats... I could easily slip to third. I'd be happy just to get through because I'm excited about my r3 idea

 

2. I think stoksy and cam have this covered. If stoksy does something with a coaster he'll probably win.

 

3. avc will probably win, then tossup between scoop and wouter. If wouter does a similar park again (stylistically) to grand central, he probably won't win. but also I'm a big otter fan

 

4.  I think whosleon should have no problem taking first. I love ling's classic style but I'm not sure it'll stand up to a well-designed roy or jappy park, especially if they up their ride design from r1. I'd probably predict roy, but I think jappy has a lot more creative energy.

 

5. liampie and tolsimir should have no problems here, probably with liam on top but could go either way.

 

6. this one is a real tough group I think, especially if steve goes low-key again. I may have to give it to rec and hoobaroo but we'll see what steve can come up with

 

7. hard again. disneylandian is probably the best here but I think hes a bit rusty and xtreme has a huge follow up to fill. I probably give it to them but jag is a huge threat.

 

8. I think dr dirt is a clear favorite but itm is looking really sharp these days- based on r1 performances I expect bubbsy and mav to unfortunately lag a little despite their high skill levels.

Q1. Cocoa and bigshootergill move on I think. Their round 1 entries were solid. I expect more of the same. Really interested to see mamarillas go again. And, Sulakke always provides quality... could easily see them go 2nd.

 

Q2. Stoksy and Cam. Stoksy's micro building is impressive.. his latest design and H2H work shows that. Cam knows how to dominate MM. .

 

Q3. Hey, I'm just happy to be here.

 

Q4. WhosLeon and Jappy. Roy can easily be top two though.

 

Q5. Liam and Tolsimir. 

 

Q6. Really tough one.. probably gonna go Recurious and gdb here. Sorry Steve.

 

Q7. Xtreme and Jaguar for me. I think disneylandian could do well too. 

 

Q8. Dr Dirt and itm. What a tough group this'll be. I expect this group will have better entries than the finals.

Quality was pretty high top to bottom, even the lowest ranked were still good.

was gonna keep going but got bored. still a very high quality set of entries, even at the bottom end!

To me it looks like this has been the best of the three MMs so far. Well done everyone, and I look forward to R2.

Really an awesome round guys! I am astounished by the overall high quality in almost every round. Good game guys! Unfortunately I wasn't able to view the west bracket ingame because of being super constrained on finishing my master's thesis.
That being said I hope to get something finished by sunday...
