I'm looking for a good program to manage my CD collection. Does anyone have some advice on that?
I want to catalog my entire collection of audio files and instantly search for my favourite songs and browse all albums using the album cover as thumbnail.

I use Excel, since I haven't tinkered with Access yet...
Access is better though for keeping a list...perhaps I should look into it...

Either MS Access or the database program in MS Works* both are pretty good for keeping a database, or you could just use Excel if you want to keep it really simple.

I think that you guys have it all wrong.
He is asking for a program that can rip music, organize it, and then he wants to be able to search it. Just use Windows Meadia Player like I said. It will suite your needs, and it's free. If you want more reading on it go to my topic. But that should be what you're looking for.

Or, you can use what I use: RealOne Player. It will suit your needs perfectly, even more so than Windows Media Player (although, it will work wonderfully as well).
I don't see how Excel or Access would help you in the slightest... -

That would be Windows Media Player 9, it will work for your cataloging interests.
yes, and if your NOT into software that manifests satan into your harddrive ::cough::Microsoft::cough::
you can use Winamp -

It doesn't manifest Satan onto your harddrive. Use it because it is a good product and will do what you want. The way WinAmp organizes shit is bad. That would be Windows Media Player 9, it will work for your cataloging interests.

I don't know about that, I've been using for a good day or two and it doesn't seem too bad. Whatever... I've sold out! Ahh... actually I just wanted a less "cluttered" player, and one that can play a lossy better than RealAudio, WMA, MP3, etc.
WinAmp works, the only drawback being that to get good audio out of it, you have to save your files in rather large sizes (like, over 100kbps, icky!).
And it doesn't have any way of giving you good, deep bass and lots of reverb. I need bass and (especially) reverb!
Is their a (truly) free plugin that can do that? If so, tell me.
But of course, none of this concerns you. For originisation purposes either Windows Media Player or RealOne will work wonderfully, but WinAmp is more than functional as well. -

Funney. WinAmp prides itself on that.I don't know about that, I've been using for a good day or two and it doesn't seem too bad. Whatever... I've sold out! Ahh... actually I just wanted a less "cluttered" player, and one that can play a lossy better than RealAudio, WMA, MP3, etc.

It might just by your audiocard Chaunces, its prolly a crappy one from what I can tell about your computer. Get a new one and be amazed.
Also, about the playback, it doesn't matter what player you've got, the play back is going to be as good as the quaility of the song, IE: if the song is only 64kbs then its isn't going to sound too good now if it is 316kbs its going to sounds amazing. The only draw back to the 316kbs is that it takes half a gig for a full CD.
If anyone knows, what quaility are the CD's that you buy at the store? -

The kbps are only one of three factors in terms of sound quality: the player, and what DSP effects it uses, and the file type itself are also major aspects.
For instance, a 64kbps RealAudio file sound much more full and lifelike than a 64kbps MP3, and a 64kbps Ogg Vorbis sounds much more detailed and complex than the other two.
The quality of the player to playback the files (along with a good DSP thingy) also, of course, has an effect.
Sadly, RealOne Player Plus is the only player with good built-in effects (WMA has some, but they're terrible). So, as I've said before, does anyone know of any good, truly free, DSP plug-ins for WinAmp?
Particularly one with lots of reverb (me love reverb!).
Also, Glitchwolf: CDs are not compressed audio formats, and as such do not work in terms of "kbps". They are very similar to .wavs, in that respect.
Like wavs, what determines the file-size is the frequency. And the frequency CDs use is 48khz, I believe. Don't know what bit though, probably higher than 16-bit, but, maybe not. -

The way WinAmp organizes shit is bad.
the way I organize shit is bad, so combined, they sorta cancel eachother out
reasons I like winamp
1.small on the screen
2.that cool occilascope
3.the media library feature makes sense to me
reasons i hate WMP
1.From Windows
2.From WIndows
3.HUGE on the screen
4.hard to navigate
5.ads, lots of them
6.from Windows -

Andrew, were are these ads you speak of time and time again? They don't exist, dummy. Show me a screenshot of an AD inside WMP, okay!?
Just saying there are ads, doesn't make it so. And it isn't so. -

Looking at RealOne's CD-ripping options, I took a look at .wav. The only option was for 1142kbps, or something like that. Seeing as .wavs can't be compressed, it would be logical that that is the Kbps rate of a CD.
I'll go and look again and make sure I have the right number, if I don't I'll correct myself.
Edit: The correct number was in fact 1411kbps. And as I think about it, I believe that when playing CDs in WinAmp the "kbps" number was 14M.
That could be the way WinAmp represents 1411kbps, as it doesn't allow itself more than 3 characters (I believe).
