RCT Discussion / OpenRCT: advantages and disadvantages

Stoksy, are you on stable or develop? Someone reported a similar tile painting issue on Reddit, and they said it was a bug in the stable build that has since been fixed.

I'm using the stable build as far as I can tell.

You probably want to try switching to develop then. Duncanspumpkin said on Reddit that this bug is fixed in the latest version. The current stable build is now a few months out of date.

Can you guys update the stable version by chance? I've been using 4.0+ and haven't many issues, maybe it's one from 2-3 weeks ago.

We were supposed to do that a while ago, but it got postponed a little, partly due to missing changes on my part and partly due to some other things. Anyway, it's near and you can treat current versions as near-release quality.

ok so I've tried openrct on my win10 here, it boots but for some reason the park I'm opening crashes te game in under a minute... does this happen for a reason?

  • janisozaur%s's Photo

Send us your park and we'll investigate.

Oh yeah ive got a problem to report (im pretty sure im on the most recent version)

When i try and save ride tracks, i get an error thats something like "that is not a valid name" and i cant save it. I couldnt find anything that was a valid name, but to be fair i didnt really choose all 26^20 ish possibilities :p

Otherwise thanks again guys, this is incredible and speeds up my work so much!

Any chance of an undo tool? :)

Is there a very stable version of open, maybe an older one? I really just want to get my feet wet with it and build with the clearance disabled.

  • bigshootergill%s's Photo

They have a stable version on the site, it's 3.0. It's the second one under the mac logo. https://openrct2.org/downloads

  • mintliqueur%s's Photo

I'm always using the develop version, and I'd say it's definitely stable enough to use. The stable builds just tend to get so far behind very quickly...

Ive only encountered crashes 1 or 2 times in the developer build and never when i was building (plus you can enable autosaving)

Btw, is there a way to select where your autosaves go? I turned it off for clutter but it would be nice in a different folder

Anyone knows what the deal is with the peep AI? To me it seems like peeps who are heading for a ride are heading for the entrance hut, not the queue entrance... One of my parks is ruined because of that.
  • Stoksy%s's Photo

    ^Seconded.

  • bigshootergill%s's Photo

^ Have you tried opening it in Vanilla again?... it usually smartens up the peeps back to their old mediocre wisdom that they usually have.

  • Liampie%s's Photo
And then when you switch back everythings goes to shit again. The peeps have no memory.

For that matter, is there a way to change the default folder that the game opens up for save/load? I have all my saves in a different folder, but haven't found a way to do that, so I have to open the system window and navigate to my folder every time.

You can symlink the directory in question…

There is no user-facing option to configure that.

Regarding the crashes mentioned: do they still happen? We sometimes introduce changes that may increase likelihood of a segfault, but then work hard to fix them all. As, I believe, I have already mentioned, it should be nearly release-quality now, bar that thing where you can't save track design properly.

We are also aware of problems with peep AI, but this is not yet resolved (both the problem itself and decision what to do about it in light of upcoming release).

I'm not a fan of when I hit "Remove all Guests" every ride in the park gets closed. Perhaps you could make a separate button for "Close all Rides"

  • Gymnasiast%s's Photo

I implemented that, and I don't like it either, but I couldn't figure out a way to remove all guests without clearing the rides.

(Incidentally, there is a button to close all rides: in the Rides List.)

@Cocoa: The track save dialog is broken at the moment. We're working on it, and it will land in the next stable.
