RCT Discussion / OpenRCT: advantages and disadvantages

Lift speed is set per ride, not per track piece. Changing that would require a new file format but once that is implemented there could actually be launch pieces instead of relying on hacked chain lifts.

    That would be very cool.

This works exactly the opposite way of how you'd want it to, but you can have a flat chain have a different speed than the ride's set chain speed, by using brakes set to the speed you want with a chain hacked into them. Does not work to slow down inclined chains though, which is what you'd want it for.
  • Liampie%s's Photo
Can't you make inclined brakes by setting the friction really high?

edit: or adjust the speed of a lift section by playing with the friction
  • X7123M3-256%s's Photo

Friction doesn't seem to have much effect on lift speed as far as I can tell - even setting the friction to 1 won't prevent the train reaching hundreds of mph on a hacked launch though it will then stop the moment it leaves the lift.

But even if it did work, would you really want to slow down the whole ride just to make the lift slower? I guess there might be some hacked flat rides where that would be desirable, but I couldn't see it being much use on coasters.

  • Liampie%s's Photo
Oh, forgot that the friction applied to the whole ride.

Wouldn't having booster pieces, as in RCT1, solve this problem? They are dedicated launch pieces, whose speed can be set individually just like brakes, and can be used with regular chain lifts. I've been missing those ever since I first played RCT2 and I could never understand why they were removed... Are there any issues with implementing such pieces in OpenRCT2? (besides breaking compatibility with vanilla)

  • X7123M3-256%s's Photo

Yes, it would solve the problem. They could be tied to brake speed instead of lift speed, since brake speed is set per-piece (maybe lift hills could use that field as well? There's less need to be able to set those individually, but it'd be nice to have the flexibility - I've certainly seen rides where the lift hill speeds up once the train is clear of the station). I don't know if there are any available slots for new track pieces now but this is certainly something that could be done if a new file format was implemented.

UPDATE: Now you can make chain lift on any track using the cheat. Even brakes or block brakes to give the illusion of a launched section.

Yes, that was merged a few days ago. I have also now implemented a command that makes it possible to change the speed and acceleration of powered rides. Speeds up to 100mph are achievable under normal conditions. Mess with the friction too much and the vehicle accelerates to around 7000mph. I also somehow managed to make the vehicle travel backwards.

I personally love OpenRCT, because its so easy to build. For me, as a "normal" player, I need 99 % zero clearance and some ride editing hacks. I dont really care about the fact, that the more complicated hacks arent possible (yet). The game is so accessible now with all the options and the windowed mode. I think its a new generation and for me there is no reason to go back to the vanilla at all.

If an easy option to make a track/ride invisible is added soon, its perfect.

Most recent update broke Liam's foliage object on flat ground.

This is the only object I can find that is affected.

    LlZ2rIC.png?1

    OpenRCT2 Build: 778

    Git Hash: 9afdd04

    Object: LMPUNDB1.dat (Liampie - Underbrush 1)

I've discovered it also happens with:

    1kHAFGRD (1k half garden) http://www.nedesigns.../3308/1khafgrd/

    1kHALFBS  (1k half bush) http://www.nedesigns.../4450/1khalfbs/

So there are probably many others as well. It seems to me it is rendering the objects .5 units lower than it should.

    This error is back.

    Launcher Version: 0.0.5

    OpenRCT2 Build: 923

    OpenRCT2 Git Hash: 0ec2b00

If an easy option to make a track/ride invisible is added soon, its perfect.

This is already implemented and has been for a while. First type "rides list" into the console to get a numbered list of all rides. Then take note of the number of the ride you want and type "rides set type <number> 47" to set the track type to crooked house (you can set other track types this way as well - it can be used this way to get steep slopes on Junior track).

This is not necessarily backward compatible with vanilla - in vanilla the crooked house track is missing certain pieces that have since been filled in with OpenRCT2. If you need backward compatability with vanilla I would check as soon as the track is made invisible. I know that block brakes, steep to flat, and diagonals all crash vanilla when made invisible.

yo has anyone encountered a problem with custom scenery turning into grass blocks? i hit the pause button on my keyboard while playing and all my work got fucked up

  • Liampie%s's Photo
The objects turned into a different object?
  • Coupon%s's Photo

yea every custom object turned into a diagonal grass block

  • Liampie%s's Photo
    That's brilliant. Screen please!

Can you provide information which commit does it happen on and steps to reproduce?
  • RCTER2%s's Photo

Since I installed openrct2 I never played this game. lol

  • Coupon%s's Photo

unfortunately i didn't take a screenshot of it. ive tried reproducing it, but it seems like it was a one time thing.

  • Liampie%s's Photo

Anyone else unable to start openrct?

edit: While I can't play the game, can we talk about the peep AI? https://github.com/O...CT2/issues/3943

    What do you think?
