best steel coaster here i come
I'm particularly curious how the judging is going to play out for the coaster categories. Is "Best Steel Coaster" essentially "build a design"? -

I am also curious on this? Are we building a full design or is it just the best layout? -

Presumably it is something less than a design, since you could just submit a regular design to the regular accolades, top 80%, and get in that way, which would also net more delicious points. Reading between the lines, an accolade qualification can also be something that has been shown publicly, unlike prelims.
To:dr it wouldn't make sense to offer accolade qualification on top of a prelim that is 'build a design.' -

Also, it wouldn't make sense for the judges to judge it as a design. If the prelims are a way to get people into the contest, judging the last 2 prelims just as "best design" will be a fruitless event, seeing as only a handful of designs have gotten over 80% in the past 5 years.....

I like you.Have you seen Fenrir?
Anyway, I don't think people need the parameters of the coaster categories explained to them. I mean, do you think you'd really win with JUST a layout? I don't think anyone has ever done that in the history of this site, ever. If you're trying to qualify for a high echelon contest, pull out all the stops you can and don't try to scrape by with the bare minimum. -

The difference between the last two categories and a design acolade is that a design accolade is a full finished 100% complete release judged as an accolade.
The layout based prelims, like all the other prelims, don't need to fully finished 100% complete releases and are judged on quality and potential.
Essentially, a bare bones layout with nothing else probably wont get you into the contest, but there isn't a need to submit and fully themed, turkey with the trimmings design. Think somewhere in between, a layout with a nice station, some nice surroundings, nothing too major, all of high quality. -

You've sprung my trap card!
In the first round a ton of judges' comments for non-qualifying parks listed reasons of unfinishedness and there not being enough quantity of work. I like the idea of being judged just on a submissions quality, but after prelim 1 I know I'm gonna need something polished and complete. Not complaining about needing that, so much as the stress it puts on people throwing prelims together in a few weeks or less.

I disagree with you there. There's a difference between unfinished, and unrefined.
Yours for example, was unfinished, but was refined, and therefore the fact it was unfinished had no effect on my vote. -
