Hey now! The fact that you listen to them came as a surprise to me, too! Along with Einsturzende Neubauten, Slowdive* and Stars of the Lid.Yes, and stop trying to be me, too. I mean this whole thing
I think years of Robert Fripp has fucked both our musical tastes up beyond all recognition. It's awful, really. Truly awful.Jack: Gardner, who likes Slowdive and Red House Painters?
Annie: He does now?
Jack: He does!
Jack: Look at his list!
Jack: A lot of shit I listen to!
On the other hand, on your list of favourite artists, you had Explosions in the Sky, but no Mogwai. This is heresy, sir.
As for Max Richter, well... I'm a big fan of The Future Sound of London, and Max is one of my favourite tracks from Dead Cities! OKAY!
I hate the stupid fucking monologues/typewriter noises though. Very cheesy. To Hell with it.
In any case, if I was trying to be you, I'd listen to M83, and I have far too much dignity for that shit. Rest assured, the faggiest bands will remain cg? exclusive, alright?
Anyway.. You like Low (wouldn't touch that shit with a ten-foot barge pole, by the way... And I love the pole), you like Red House Painters.. Why no love for Codeine?
Also: The scariest Boyd is Boyd Rice. Freak. He reminds me of me, back when I had enough heart and soul to hate everything, instead of just Spoonie.
*Get Jesu. Get Jesu. Get Jesu. Get Jesu. Get Jesu.
Fuck man, I'll do another YouSendit. Click here. This sounds a lot like Souvlaki Space Station. In fact, every Jesu song sounds like a Slowdive song slowed down around ten times and with a bassist from a doom-metal band inexplicably thrown into the mix. -

Really?Hey now! The fact that you listen to them came as a surprise to me, too! Along with Einsturzende Neubauten, Slowdive* and Stars of the Lid.
Well, maybe so. You see, and this is completely true, almost all of that music I started liking in late-2003, and 2004, when I wasn't around these boards very much, and I returned to this board a day after I got thrown out of a "crisis" center for teens who are completely fucked because I got into a fight with my mother (and who diagnosed me with "chronic depression", and gave me pills I stopped taking because I was just as fucked as before, and now had headaches) because my insurance company refused to pay for my treatment (they said I "didn't need it"), and being locked up for a week in a building totally removed from society, being forced to listen to non-stop Smooth Jazz, and watch non-stop Disney movies, and keep being told I was insane, and fucked, and stupid, and horrible, and everything I had built my life around was bullshit, and that I should become a "realist", and a bright, bubbly, and pathetic, idiot, I came out completely fucked, and lost, and stupid, and well, that's the state I arrived back here at NE.
Now, almost 6 months later I'm finally starting to peice my self back together, and hence why the list may not make sense with your idea of me (not that I'm sure what that is, actually).
But I've loved Einstruezende Neubauten for a very, very long time. I'm surprised you didn't notice that.On the other hand, on your list of favourite artists, you had Explosions in the Sky, but no Mogwai. This is heresy, sir.
Sorry, forgot Mogwai, and Codeine. But they don't have names, or music, as catchy as the ones I remembered, so it's not entirely my fault.Anyway.. You like Low (wouldn't touch that shit with a ten-foot barge pole, by the way... And I love the pole), you like Red House Painters.. Why no love for Codeine?
And, what's wrong with Explosions In The Sky and Low?In any case, if I was trying to be you, I'd listen to M83, and I have far too much dignity for that shit. Rest assured, the faggiest bands will remain cg? exclusive, alright?
What's wrong with M83? But, actually, I'm becoming increasingly less interested in them. I blame their new album. I hate it! And it makes me realize all the flaws of their first two, but I still love those records! I wonder if the guy who left will do a solo thing? Hope so.*Get Jesu. Get Jesu. Get Jesu. Get Jesu. Get Jesu.

It's nice, actually, I like it. Hear what your saying, although the vocalist sounds a bit too much like a generic mix of every other "Indie" rock singer since, um, well, ever, which is a bit distracting (music like this should have more of a "dreamy" or "unique" voice, and preferably a "dreamy and unique" voice).
* I love your ability to get me to reveal the depths of my soul by agreeing with me, more or less, as opposed to everyone who manages to do by disagreeing, and hate your ability to get me on days when I'm taking the worst possible care of myself, two things which probably have something to do with one another, come to think of it. -

Gardner...
That post makes me wonder how much of my taste in music and movies is dictated by the five weeks I spent locked up in a mental institution. Probably quite a bit, considering my bias towards the fearful/paranoid/depressing/slow.
We only rented movies once a week, though. Patients got turns to choose what got rented, so we rarely got Disney. When it was my turn? Nightmare Before Christmas. I'd not seen it before, you see. TV-watching wasn't really done much, though, we spent most of the time in a war with the staff.
We used to watch Teletubbies now and then, though, and laugh ourselves shitless making innuendoes out of everything.
They were fun times.
And by that, I mean, the single most traumatic experience I've ever had to live through.
Personality-defining, though.
It's interesting, actually, I've never thought music to be any sort of reflection on my personality... Which is stupid, now that I think about it, because a lot of the stuff I listen to, I listen to because I can RELATE to the feeling being expressed. And the feeling usually isn't something as one-dimensional as "happy" or "sad", it's more "STUMBLING LOST AND ALONE IN THE FOG ALL DRUNK AND CONFUSED AND PUKING", or "TERRIFIED AND PANICKING - HYSTERIA RISING", or "WANTINGTOFUCKMYSELFUPWANTINGTOFUCKMYSELFUP".
And of course Ambient4's "CONFUSED DISLOCATION/SUBDUED FEAR" (hooray!).
See, I've had discussions where I've repeatedly said that you can't possibly judge someone on their musical tastes because it has no bearing on their personality.
And now I wonder if that's true or not.
I mean, I probably wouldn't listen to King Crimson and Neurosis if I didn't always fall victim to terror and panic, and I wouldn't love Slint or the Red House Painters as much as I do if I wasn't so down all the time... On the other hand, what do Einsturzende Neubauten say about me? I don't think they say anything, other than, I'm fond of inventive percussion.... Or Pan Sonic and Merzbow? Hmm...
I've always defended noise as "ambient but LOUDER!"...
With my favourite noise tracks, though, you always get this ascending tone.... It's trippy, I reckon, etherial, medititive....
... So I'm not really aggressive and abrasive, am I?
Oh...
Shit.
It's an interesting subject, anyway, though. Discuss!
Nothing wrong with Explosions... I think they're a little derivative, but otherwise, they're a fine band. Low, though? They just don't do anything for me...And, what's wrong with Explosions In The Sky and Low?
I guess it's like Ulrich Shnauss... Yeah, he's good, he does what he does very well, but it just doesn't click with me. Even though it's the type of thing that I "ought" to like.
M83? Well, Dead Cities, Red Seas.. Is a decent album. A little overblown, though, you know? They need to reign back a bit, I reckon, there's not much in the way of restraint, and they end up sounding like the Muse of shoegaze. Haven't heard anything else by them, but I don't really want to, either.
Anyway, this post is underdeveloped, so I might expand on some of it later.
In the meantime, I'm listening to -
Just As Was Told
Lift to Experience
The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads
Oh, and, you're right, the Justin Broadrick's vocals suck, but keep in mind he used to be in Godflesh and Napalm Death. You can't expect wonders, man. Plus, he's a guy. Trying to do shoegaze vocals. Yeah, exactly. -

I agree, well, except that I've heard their other two records. As I said I hated their third, but the first is quite good, and actually, is a bit like you described: more restraint. It's also more boring.
Anyways, I'm listening to "Washed up" by Codeine, from "The white birch". Inspired by JFK's previous post, actually. -
