I'm afraid using 3d is just not a very suitable method to get RCT-graphics-friendly results. -

^^ I agree, copying existing textures and forming those to different objects, is the way i'm doing it and i love the results so far. -

AE 3d modeled all his stuff, and it tends to fit the game really well. So it's not about 3d modelling, it's more about finding the right aesthetic. -

AE did pretty well indeed, although I do think his graphics are still too 3d-ish to REALLY blend in. The Dream Woodie for example.
Of course it's possible with 3D. It's just really hard and most of the times it doesn't work out well. -

Wow, thanks for the replies guys. I really do have to agree with all the comments about the off-look of my 3D objects in the game. I think since first starting to do this, that has always been a real struggle for me, was trying to match my renders to the games graphics. I'm constantly trying to find new ways to matching the look of the game, but trying to be a little different at the same time. It's a hell of a lot harder than I originally anticipated when first starting.
The main problem I think I have is using a modern 3D renderer to design 8 bit 256 color graphics for a game that is over 10 years old. It's still an area I can't get used to sometimes considering all my software has been used for high polygon photorealistic work.
I really like the idea of you guys being picky about my objects and whether or not they will work in the game. Normally, I'm sure someone would get pissed off for not hitting a winner everytime, but I like to think it's complete opposite for me. It tends to give me more drive to try harder for things that people WILL possibly use.
As far as AE goes, I wouldn't even allow myself to try and be compared as he, I feel, has done things beyond my abilities and if anything, he's actually one of my inspirations for even starting this.
Right now, I just have to accept what I have to work with, and keep trying to find ways to make the objects work better for everyone, as well as myself. I just really hope you guys aren't tired of seeing my persistance with making objects as I really didn't want to fill the forums with useless stuff and take up space. I'm just really not one to give up and throw in the towel so easily. -

Since we were on this talk of using 3D to make objects, I remembered I had this screen capture from some time ago, and honestly I can't recall what site it came from. It was some site that talked about individuals who had come up with popular video games and had Chris Sawyer in there. This image actually was supposedly submitted by Chris himself that he had gotten from his designers who made the rides and scenery.
I know it's pretty crap but this is the actual size of the image that was on the site, so details are lost, but Chris was saying he had never even seen these development shots until the game was actually finished.
I believe, according to Chris Sawyers site, there was a multitude of 3D apps, as well as 2D editors that were used in developing the graphic. I don't even think these particular 3D editors would run on a modern Windows machine seeing as they were used back in the Windows 98 days. I would have loved to try them out. But even based on these screenshots, there was a lot of detail that went into some of the models. Just something I thought to throw out there for shits and giggles. -

EDIT :
Scratch this post. I'll edit it again when I have better results with my road dividers. -

Wow...
I love your attitude man.
AE has also been an inspiration for me, i even turned one of his rides into animated scenery.
That was also the time i started working with obj editor and a while later i saw the importance of paint combined with editor.
Recently i started using Gimp to do the things paint can't.
Editing is nice, especially the fact that you can make every piece you can imagine and realize.
The biggest downside i.mo. is the amount of time, patience and persistence you need to invest, to make a decent object, especially when you don't have examples. -

Hey guys, just wanted to post a little piece of a project I'm currently working on. Been trying to make the best of my free time and with so many ideas shooting through my head, I've been kind of all over the place with projects. This project I got going on I'm planning to do a full road set, with lined road tiles, road dividers, possibly new types of street/highway lamps, guard rails, etc. It's a slow process with tons of testing back and forth, but here's a shot I took trying to just basically fit pieces together and see how they work. Nothing fancy. Just love to hear what you all think so far, and honesty always welcome, even if it's harsh. />

I think these lines are on the path blocks. Which is helpful if the only thing you're using that type of line and pathblock for is a road, but not so much otherwise. -

@Liampie - Sorry, I really didn't even know you made a set of road lines. Honestly, the only ones I seen were in a screenshot from inthemanuals thread about road blocks and dividers. I honestly don't even have much clue who makes most of the scenery as I don't generally download much, but rather just make it. I really didn't mean to steal away from anything someone or you may have already done. Honestly, just been doing this stuff for fun is all.
I started working on the road blocks, then did some road dividers, then it just kind of went from there, to just go with the stuff I was already doing.
@inthemanual - Yes, the lines are textured onto the blocks, but in a nutshell, the lines are composited over the concrete texture in the 3d editor, so they can just easily be removed and the blocks can be rendered again in a jiffy, exactly as they are, just minus the lines. Or, I can do just the lines, and no concrete. So, it's not strictly limited to street tiles right now. I'm just on limited time so I can only make so much, so fast. -

No need to comment on these or anything, just throwing some snips out there. Just got done with a highway concrete divider, which I submitted to the first post of this thread. Maybe not every ones thing, but seeing as how roads seem to be in a lot of parks, maybe someone would have a use for it.
I don't plan on making road tiles and releasing them. The ones in the screen shot I decided just to make for fun and testing purposes I suppose.

The next screen is basically just some stuff I was dabbling with for a night trying some new techniques in rendering for the game. I know Halloween isn't for another 3 months, but I was thinking of getting a jump on a Halloween themed set for the time being to possibly have it done by then. Nothing serious just yet.
EDIT -
Just adding in another custom object I'm testing right now. i know the idea kind of stems off the skull that already exists in the game, but decided to do my own take on it, with a new light pattern. May even go back and do some more addition to it, like some weeds or something around it, I don't know.

Now we're getting somewhere! That skull is pretty good. I can see that getting used. Don't bother making torches, we have plenty already.
Have you considered making rides? -

I would really love a some new Halloween stuff. A good standing skeleton would also be nice. And if you need a tester I would love to do it. -
