Ironically, after being frustrated and stumped by this for a few days now, within 15 minutes of posting this, I figured it out. I'd selected a non-default tab that had no objects in it. Which was really a surprise because I can't believe that tab didn't have one single object in it that was already on the bench.

Go figure.
