He pioneered modern-day technology and has had an influence, be it good or bad, on most people across the globe. That said, I'm not a massive fan of Apple but i'm not going to say it's a terrible company. Most people i know own an Apple product, but i don't, so i can't personally judge whether they are good or not. -

There's no doubt in my mind that he was a creative genius. He essentially got both Apple and Pixar to their current day status from a business standpoint and even had to save Apple when he returned to the company after leaving it. I'm an engineer myself and the only Apple product I own is an iPod, but nobody can deny the impact that Apple, and thus Jobs, had on the industry. So many of other company's products base their benchmarks on the popular Apple versions. I personally don't have the money for a lot of their products and don't really care for some of their design over functionality decisions but there's no denying their positive influence on the industry.
Some of you complain about engineers/child laborers or whatever not getting the recognition, and that's very true, but that's not what this topic is about. This topic is also not about him/his death being more important than the several average Joe deaths each day; if you're going to complain about the media paying tribute to somebody famous dying, you can go be an internet pseudo-intellectual at reddit.com/r/politics or somewhere like that. Seriously if the media were to post a scrolling list of every recorded death that day, would you watch it every single time? Do you even stay after a movie to watch the credits? There's no need to make a big stink out of people remembering somebody who has passed, and just as I said in the 911 thread, you're essentially being like the people who oppose the rights of homosexuals to marry. -

RIP
I don't own anything by apple but I'm sure as hell a big fan of all their 'i' products.
My dad got his iPhone a week ago, Whenever I'm near a mac store I just need to scribble something on an iPad and in school I've borrowed a LOT of iPods to survive the boredom.
I will not miss him personally but he'll be missed as an innovator, salesman or whatever you want to call him. -

my mum (mom for americans) just brought home and iPad 2 from work to test out (so they can use it). It's only temporary, because she has previously brought home a Blackberry Playbook. Coincidence? -

Because of Steve Jobs, it inspired Windows to include the basic click/point GUI that almost all computers use today. Please don't talk about human rights and apple, and realize that with almost everything we buy these days (especially in the US) your supporting child and/or harsh, unfair labor. The problem can't be solved until the population in China and most of all the uneducated countries in the world start having less kids so the wealth can be distributed evenly. Which by then I'm guessing we'll have technology to help speed up productivity in place of less amount of the labor force.
Steve jobs was indeed a genius, he was a pioneer in the growing world of technology, and because of him he made a huge difference in our lives. I'm pretty sure he was not a marketing genius in anyway whatsoever, when Apple grew big, they would have had an advertisement team like all other major corporations.
He might have been an asshole but I think he was the Thomas Edison of our days. What's even more remarkable is that he started off with absolute crap and managed to make a company the most successful in the world. -

For the record Phatage, I actually do stay after the movie and watch the credits.
I guess I've been put into the category of the haters in this topic, but that's not what I intended. I for one respected the man, yet I'm not one who will go out of my way and act as if he had an enormous effect on my life and I wouldn't exist without him had he not done what he did (as many had acted).
Obviously being the Pixar fan I am today, plus the fact that I'm on a desktop at the moment shows that my life has in fact been affected by this man, but not my entire existence. -

^It's interesting that you say that, so let me go along with my story. My dad was inspired by Steve Jobs, and decided to become a computer programmer because of him (He now programs on the iPhone). So in many ways, Steve has had an enormous effect on my life, just through my dad.
It brings up interesting thoughts for me because, if this guy never lived, I actually might not even fucking exist.
So I guess I can't argue how important he is because I'm clearly biased, but you cannot deny he has changed the world in many, many ways. But I for one can pinpoint areas he has affected me personally.
On a side note, I went to the Apple store near me a day after he died, I was amazed at how much was in front of the store. Flowers, cards, and apples with bites taken out of them. It's truly amazing to think that at least some fraction of them really, genuinely cared for Steve. Wish my funeral could be like that. -

Yet you're willing to go out of your way to say these things for no reason. It wouldn't be going out of your way to say he had a huge impact on your life if he didn't, that would be plain lying. So thanks for not lying, but no thanks for going out of your way regardless, you see? When we used to go check out young student bands at college my friend would go and say "Pink Floyd is better" to me as joke. He didn't go out of his way to say to supporters of the bands that he didn't think they were that great (even though that joke didn't necessarily mean he thought they were bad). -

I'm just going to do what I originally did when I heard the news...WWHHHAAAAATTT?!
Way back in the day, he practically started the age of the personal computer...though Wozniak kind of got f'ed in the a on that deal.
Interesting how secretive he was about everything, though...
Like the infamous case of the prototype iPhone in the bar,
or the teenage blogger who ran ThinkSecret,
...and other such incidents.
Even though I never really cared for Macs, he still began the age of the computer. I mean, where would we be today without Lisa?
He was a legend.
He will be missed. -

I think he did change the world.
Not all continents, only the rich ones.
Not with their computers but with the ipod and especially the iphone and ipad.
Both of those products started a trend among other labels to make 'smartphones' and 'tablets'.
Did change our lives and also our economy.
Damn right. -

I wouldn't have to keep saying I'm indifferent to his death if people didn't keep telling me I should care.Yet you're willing to go out of your way to say these things for no reason.
