Ask the Experts / RCT2 & RCTLL on new Macbook Pros

  • RRP%s's Photo
Itll work fine in a VM. Ive been using parallels with XP for steam and stuff before the mac version came out and there were no problems. Boot camp would probably be even better since it just loads the other OS with no need to spilt ram between etc
I only bought mine for design purposes for the better font book, screen colour setup, some printers not accepting non OSX formats etc. I can see why non designers buy them now though over other pre builds. Sure you can get a better system spec for the same price if you built your own pc. OSX is much better than windows though and the fact that im working on something that feels nice to work on is great. I love how a program installation is literally drag one file where ever you want it, then just double click that file and the program opens

    ^that.
Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver are so much nicer to use.

Yeah I'm using BootCamp and I do have a XP Pro setup besides my OSX one.
Just curious whether RCT runs natively on OSX. But I don't think that's what "That Guy" and the others were talking about.

I doubt itll run in OSX although it might work with 'cross-over' ive not tried that yet,but doesn't it let you run programs in osx without using a VM?
Itll work fine in something like parallels though, and when it takes under 30 secs to boot up XP its not really a compromise

    I noticed.

Oh, didn't thought it was so obvious.

I am 99,9999999999% sure  that RCT and RCT2 will not run natively on Mac OSX, why? Because it uses an .exe file, thats an extension that is not supported on OSX.

    Yeah I know.
That's why I am curious which program That Guy, AvanineCommuter and disneylandian are using.
Indeed RRP cross-over might be the solution here although it doesn't support all programs.

With my old 13' Macbook I ran Bootcamp, which made it lag-less in RCT2, but it was a pain to open up downloaded parks because I only downloaded on the Mac side.

Now with my new Pro, I have VMware, it's a little laggy and glitches a bit, but for the most part its great because it's so much more convenient.

Hmm, I've just been using bootcamp, but I should give VMware a try, it looks sweet.

EDIT: Well, I've been fooling around with it for a bit with RCT2. It is certainly glitchy- very choppy when moving around the map. I may just keep using bootcamp just for the ease of playability, if anything. Taking 30 seconds to reboot into XP isn't a big deal if it means smooth and authentic RCT.

So it was bullshit that you were running RCT2 natively on Mac OS X.

    rct2 does?
  • sixflagsfreak56%s's Photo
    Yup.

Cena I never said I was doing that. I was running it on XP, on a Mac.
  • Cena%s's Photo
OH wait, you are correct, I thought you were one of the three who did said that it was possible.

I have and will continue to run RCT2 through bootcamp. VMware is okay, but is really only good if you want to check out a park, but the handling characteristics/moving around the map are a little choppy (when holding the right mouse button/2 fingers on trackpad it moved 20 units worth at quick intervals). For serious building, I'll stick to bootcamp.

Cena, not everyone is gaga over #s. If you want to go by sheer numbers then of course custom computers will win. The reason Macs are so popular aren't because they are cool to show off to friends, but because they are idiot-proof. Basically. You must be a fool to screw up and crash a mac, unlike Windows which crashes every other day just because. Macs are designed to be user-friendly and stable, reliable. On that end, you can't argue against it.
  • That Guy%s's Photo
Cmon man.... Why are you bumping this just to argue about an OS? Let's all just let it go....
  • AvanineCommuter%s's Photo
Mainly just to say that I'm using bootcamp; Freak wanted to know. ;)

Ok I am pretty sure on what I am doing I currently own my new macbook pro (and love everything about it), but I haven't began to install the needed software for RCT2/LL. I upgraded to 8 gigs of ram I believe and 500 gigs of space (i believe thats what it is; i am not too tech savy) Just tell me if this is right or not:

    Macbook Pro + Bootcamp + Windows 7-32bit = RCT2/LL?
  • Levis%s's Photo
well 5 gigs of those ram wont be used if you go for 32 bit versions of the OS. you need to use a 64 bit version if you want to use your ram. and the 64 bit versions have problems with trainers (at least I know windows 7 has)
