I really don't understand you guys. I have plenty of atheist friends who are really great people, and I couldn't say one bad thing about them. So what if they don't share my views on religion? That's not my business. I do what's right for me, they do what's right for them.
Here, it seems like everyone who's anti-religion has some kind of personal problem with religious people. I feel like people are so insecure about their own intellect, that they feel like they need to denounce religion to make themselves feel "superior" for refusing to believe in something that is reason and logic says "can't exist." Well, fuck reason and logic. It's not like quoting famous scientists and writers (Fullmetal), makes me feel like I must be stupid because all of these "intelligent" minds disagree with my beliefs. If someone is truly that close-minded that they can't beleive in anything other than what's in front of their faces, then I'd have to say that I feel sorry for them.
You guys say that religion is what deters humanity from becoming tollerant of other people's life-styles. Last time I checked, I haven't said one negative thing about gays (which I guess is how this whole debate started), yet look who's so fast to attack religion. That doesn't sound very tollerant to me. If you really need to blame religion for your problems, then that's pathetic. California voted against gay marriage, not Christians. Don't make religion a scapegoat when it's not directly. Obviously, there were enough people who thought marriage to be "sacred" that it was banned, and I'd be willing to bet that they weren't all Christians.
Basically, I just find it pathetic how insecure some of you are that you need to attack religion. If you don't agree with it, that's fine. You have that option in life. But don't attack it, acting like all of us God-fearing people are wasting our time. Wasting what time? I lose nothing by believing in God, and don't even tell me that I do. I'm an intelligent kid. I've always been a good student, and I'd like to think that I have a bright future ahead of me. Believing in God is not a product of my ignorance, or inability to reason. That's bullshit. I hate all these people who argue that "religion is a thing of the past. We're too advanced to believe in this." That's not true. In my opinion, the truly intelligent man is one who can see the bigger picture, and know that there could be more to life than what we see. And even if you don't believe that, respect those who do, rather than calling them ignorant or stupid for believeing something that defies reason. -

i haven't been attacking religion; i am religious. i just don't think religious institutions are great, because of the real motivation behind most of them (particularly the Catholic Church). -

I see nothing wrong with believing in a religion, even if I myself couldnt ever believe in any of it. I think theres always a rational/logical side of life and an emotional/spiritual side. Everyone wants to be happy with their life and if their religion makes them happy, then its right for them. It just makes me so angry when people are willing to kill to protect and enforce their religion, it just has no place in others lives. Maybe I have said a few out of line or offensive things about religion, but I dont think you should generalize us off of what FullMetal says. I feel just about the same, he seems to be doing it just because it seems like the cool thing to do.
I do stand by my belief that prop 8 is based in religion however. Marriage began as a religious institution, therefore any attempts to enforce it are also religious. Im sure your right, not all people base it in religion. But so many people I have heard tell me the definition of marriage, and support it with that was what the bible said. Thats for sure where it originated, although current laws have probably adopted this as well. Marraige never should have been brought into politics in the first place, law applies to everyone while religion applies to the individual. People can believe what they want, but their attempts to enforce it on others, based in religion or not, is what annoys me. -

Do your research about "marriage" ...it was established to keep power and wealth within certain families maintaining social, economic and political power.....certainly civil institutions, NOT religious.
And those of you who voted for prop 8, you'll be shortly getting a bill from me and my husband for $35,000...the cost of my wedding...as we're planning on suing every religious asshole who voted for this ludicrous, hate filled, mean spirited prop....and to wit, ALL religious institutions that preached to their congregations to vote FOR it, will have their Tax Exempt status revoked....go drink your Kool-Aid in a barn...cause you won't be able to afford your fancy churches for much longer.
New slogan...straight from trix's mouth...."Kill a Christian for Jesus", because clearly Christians are NOT following the teachings of Christ...don't believe me? Then OPEN THE FUCKING BIBLE YOU SO FERVENTLY CLING TO and find me ONE passage where Jesus himself decries gay people, or gay marriage........go on....I'm waiting.....oh yeah, that's right...THERE ISN'T ONE! -

Seriously, what percentage of religious fundamentalists do you think support gay marriage? What percentage of atheists/agnostics do you think support gay marriage? Answering that question with any degree of accuracy will allow you to understand why everyone is so fast to "attack religion".
If the above weren't true I'd agree with you 100%. Well, at least for religious people who are not hardcore fundamentalists.
The extent of which my "attacking religion" will ever go is:
1) Religion is not supported by any evidence which would cause a rational person to believe that it is probably correct, especially true for any particular religion, and requires that someone take a leap of faith and essentially just assume it to be correct, and
2) If someone's sole justification for believing in something is faith, that is certainly their right, but if they try to legislate this belief on the population they deserve their beliefs to be exposed as the silly fairy tales that they are.
Passing proposition 8 is definitely entering the territory where I think it is okay to "attack religion". -

Just to make everyone happy:
There is no hell, there is no heaven, there is no god.
And if there is a god he would be ashamed of you Kevin. -

gymkid dude, gwazi, and cam all posted nice, open-minded stuff. Why is that so hard? -

I was completely tolerant of religion until a fifth law, a constitutional amendment, was added to the Florida law books only to discriminate against gay couples. The law was based on Christianity. I'm sorry your book says being gay is bad, but it should have no say as to who I can and can not be with.
I don't agree with your beliefs and I have no intention of hating on religion, but when your beliefs start making decisions in my personal life, I'm not going to sit back and be like, "oh well... I guess they're right."
I'm being completely serious here, not trying to take a cheap shot, just curious. Although the bible says homosexuality is bad, doesn't it also endorse incest, rape and slavery? How is it that it's okay to follow some parts so heavily, but ignore other parts? -

^Yes.
Also, this argument could go on for days. I suggest we change the subject.
I heard Cindy McCain was really upset over John's loss. I don't know where that came from though. A friend of mine told me. -

^Should she be happy?
I do appreciate the subject change, though. Thanks for that. -
FullMetal Offline
Well, it's a shame for her that he didn't win, but what is she supposed to do? There really isn't much she can do, but she shouldn't be upset over it. I mean, now she gets to rag on Obama for not doing what he says.
And who would've taken care of McCain's seven houses? Somebody's got to do it.
