No, I mean like, every second.

    The difference is,
These people do not play fags on screen.

    Isn't that right, JJ.

    Huh?
THE US GOVERNMENT KILLED HEATH LEDGER???
    Those BASTARDS!

I didn't know they ran all the news networks though...
Do they also keep Atlantis off the maps?

I mean; the media uses every little thing they can use to get the attention away from the economical crisis.

If the American people, the masses, hear that there's an economic recession, they will stop spending loads of money and they'll only buy what they need. The ammounts of money that American people spend on IPhones, Xboxs, Wiis, PS3s etcetera are the only thing that keep the American economy healthy at the moment. There only has to be one little negative shift in demand, and the economy of America, and with America, will collapse.

You don't have to study Economics to know that's what about to happen. Bush said last week; the base of our economic system is strong. He had to say that to make (American) people believe that, to make people believe in the economy. The economy of America is based un trust, nothing else. 80% of the Americans have huge loans. and that's the thing that could make this the 30s times 100.

If people stop spending, there will be overproduction. Companies will have to fire lots of people in order to keep the company stable, since there will be no more profits. The people who get fired have no social system to rely on, and won't be able to pay there loans. And that's the points where things get worse. The banks in America rely on the incomes from these loans. As soon as people who have these loans go bankrupt, the banks won't get their money back. This would be the point were all people that still have jobs want their savings back that they had trusted to the bank to pay their own loans. The banks won't be able to give those people their money back, since an average bank only has 30% of the money that they are trusted to keep. As long as nobody claims it at once, you won't have a problem. But when all people want their money back to pay loans, taxes, food, etcetera there will be a huge problem.

At some moment the bank won't be able to give people their money and then they will loose the trust of the people. The bank goes bankrupt (remember, this has already happened a few times last year). When more and more banks go bankrupt, the dollar will start losing it's value (which also already is happening).

At this moment we are balancing on the edge of a recession, maybe even a total collapse of the world economy. We might even be on the edge of a global shift of the leading economies and countries. If the American government won't act quickly, America might loose it's role as worldleader and pass that title to an Asian country. But this would of course be the worst case scenario.

I'm not disputing any of that (altho pessimism isn't going to help things, you get that, right?).
But the media isn't agenda-driven in this instance. Or rather it is, but it's only agenda is to gain ratings.
I think Gir up there has argued my case for me here. The worth of news is based entirely upon it's human impact. The impact from recession is far, far greater than some dude dying, but it's indirect. To a lot of people it's just a problem contained within the financial institutions (terms like "credit crunch" don't exactly help matters).
Despite the fact that an unstable economy breeds an unstable society, for Gir, recession is just a "material" worry.
    And why not?
I doubt that many of us have been to Zimbabwe recently and taken a look at the ugliness that can manifest thru "material worry".
  • catachresistant%s's Photo
Also the American government (or rather your central bank) did act quickly.
    And scared people.

    :(

Do you honestly believe that people will curb spending on their own based on the economic situation of the country itself?
It doesn't work that way. There's a reason we use interest rates to control spending - people's hands need to be forced.
I mean shit, even when people don't have money, they like to spend.
I don't think these people are going to have their desire to buy shit curbed until they're pissbroke, and I defo don't think they give a shit to even hear about this stuff on the news.

At least, these are the things I would be saying if I was jaded.

I am not though, I have hope for all mankind. We can all make a difference!!

for Gir, recession is just a "material" worry.

Well, yeah, once I achieve nirvana, no problem.

You don't just go into a recession, Camcorder. It's not like one day it's like, okay, we are now in a recession! The economy is bad, yes.

Anyone who thinks that the state of the world economy is shallow and materialistic while a famous actor dying is important, well. I don't know what to say to that.

TMZ is much more interesting than the BBC, you're right. And the importance of everything ought to be measured by interestingness.

You know what, I never really said that, but I'm not about to place importance on, for example, the United States failing as a world superpower (things change, the rest of the world deals with it too) over a tragic loss of life (and no I'm not pro-life). YES, he's just an actor, and no it really doesn't effect me, but it is in fact sad. What makes it a tragedy is that he's someone many people know. People die everyday but no one honestly expects you to feel a strong sense of loss over people halfway across the world you can't even put a face to. It's just reality.

The economy is a big deal, yes. I care about it, yes. I want it fixed, of course. But life is so much bigger than the economy. If the world economy falls apart it's not the end of the world, but hey, maybe it's even necessary for us to wake up.

Well thats what happened with the Great Depression. The stock market just fucking crashed. Of course there were other factors, it wasn't out of no where, but it seems a lot like what happened yesterday. The economy has been shaky, and yesterday the stock market got fucked over. It might take us a while for the consequences to affect us which might make it seem gradual, but it can still happen quickly. And I dont quite understand this overwhelming sympathy people have for certain people dying when thousands of our troops in war, and thousands of people starving are dying around the world. And I think if we were exposed to their story more, then it would be just as sad to see them die as an actor who took too many pills. It seems like the only life Americans actually care about are fetuses and celebrities.

^ yep, you got it completely right!

Only.....this does not apply to only Americans......it goes for all people around the world once their more basic needs are fullfiled/taken care off....

And I fully agree with Camcorder22...!

    Emergo

Look at all the Americans getting all pre-emptively defensive.
    It's so cute.
  • Midnight Aurora%s's Photo
No need for being defensive. The economy always slows down when a Republican is in office.

Plus, Heath Ledger was making Batman, dude. Fucking Batman.

It's not about the United States falling as a world power. It's about having a job and making ends meet. Heath Ledger is dead. I'm not going to sit here and fucking mourn and pretend to be sad. I honestly don't care. It's too bad, yes, especially for his kid, but my life goes on as normal. On the other hand, if it's bloody impossible for me to get a job when I graduate, or to obtain financing to get a new car or house, that affects me a hell of a lot more than a guy I've never met kicking the bucket.

    MMmm, batman.

    Also, Vote me for president.

I bring about tax cuts, and downsize the government, and make my own documentary to prove that global warming is a myth and this happens every couple billion years (dinosaurs and ice ages, anyone?) and boom, no more failing economy. Also, we need to stop being pussies and drill for oil in Alaska. the shit's there, why the fuck not use it? we'd need very little land to access what's there, so what the fuck?

Rest in peace, Mr. Ledger. Even though I never saw your gay cowboy movie, I'll miss you. for an hour or two during batman.

Is the middle part serious? Because if that's not sarcasm, you need a good kick or three to the head to set you straight.
