Ask the Experts / RCT problems

I've been having problems reinstalling RCT on my comp. I've already posted this on the atari forum and i was suggested to ask about it here so here goes:

So basically i decided to install RCT and the expansion packs onto my old comp since RCT3 is way too laggy to play since the comp is old. I stuck the RCT cd in and the menu popped up and had the options play, uninstall, and exit. I don't have RCT installed on my comp, there is no hasbro interactive file, nothing. So i click play anyways, nothing happens, i click uninstall, nothing happens. Then i remember we stuck all our files onto our external hard drive because we were reformatting the comp or something to attempt and make it faster. So i got the hard drive, stuck it in, copied the RCT files from the hard drive to my comp, still doesnt work. If i click on the icon for the expansion packs that was in the folder it starts to load and then says to put the disk in the D drive, which it is. i click ok and it gives me an error. I just deleted these files since it didn't really help...

People on the atari forum have given me advice, saying that there might be stray hidden files that are being recognized, i've deleted all of those. There is no Hasbro Interactive file in my C drive and in the registry editor. Someone on the atari forum suggested a patch for running RCT on xp after it's installed...but i don't have it installed even though it acts like it is.

search for a registery cleaner like CCleaner and use that to delete the old registery keys

if you have the rights to edit your registry, try this. (must be logged in as administrator in xp)

windowskey+r > enter "regedit" press enter
    browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Fish Technology Group

it should only contain "RollerCoaster Tycoon Setup".
remove the whole "Fish Technology Group" folder.

    then retry the installer.
    might need a restart too.

the problem is that everything your computer "knows" is stored as registry information. where files are located, what software is installed, what config your operating system has been adjusted to, and so on.
so moving the rct files around has changed the physical state of the files, but not the theoretical knowledge of your computer that rct is installed. so when you stuck the cd in, your computer checked the registry if rct was installed and "yes" it was, so it had the "play" icon. when you hit it, it could not find any rct related files so nothing happens.
most likely, you have restored the rct files to a different directory than what rct was originally installed to. so instead of deleting the registry key and then reinstalling rct, you might as well try to adjust the folder configuration in your registry, although i do not advice you to, unless you are fair familiar with registry editing.

tools such as levis suggested will do the job too. mostly they are checking if registry entries still have valid links to files on your hard disk. (as in if these files actually still exist). if it is not the case, they let you delete all of those entries.

    good luck.
