RCT Discussion / Fantasy vs. Realism

    hahaha

wow, xin is trying to say "it's ok to look down on those not as skilled" without realizing that I'm talking about a more fundamental point about what skill IS in rct. So he fails twice.

But the POINT was that, if a ranking of skill exists... there's no where near the amount of structure required to make it a "hierarchy" in the first place. What people consider skill in rct can differ WILDLY from one person to another. The hierarchy is in your head, my friend. When you get right down to it, what one considers skill and what is not skill is just an exercise in how well an aesthetic reverberates with that individual. This is also why peope confuse hard work for skill, skill for creativity, and creativity for hardwork. None of us have a fucking clue, so just concentrate on translating what is in your mind onto the canvas that is rct.

    Simple enough, right?

Xin, stop posting such long posts. You're just embarrassing yourself by exposing your ignorance, inexperience, and general idiocy.

^ very right, though often hard to see or admit to yourself....the disappointment when you come to realise your creativity is just skill or your skill just comes down to hard work, etc....

but as long as you can enjoy what you are doing without diminishing or hurting anyone else or needing to feel yourself "better" (whatever that may be??!) than others.....just enjoy I would think.... also simple, Right?

I'll pop a "Who cares?" in here.

Now I will prepare for the attack.

Heres how you do it both ways successfully:

    Make fantastic realism.
    Make realistic fantasy.

    OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Honestly, I don't really think anyone does care. But it makes for an interesting discussion.

Some people like indy flicks with real-life-ish stories and characters (realism).

Have you even seen an Indy film? Almost as far from realism as possible really.

I agree with most people: do what you want, it doesn't matter.

    BURN!@!!!!!

I hadn't realized all indie films were the same. Thanks for the enlightenment, sir.

I'm fairly certain Dr Dude was refering to "Indy film" in the "Indiana Jones" sense whereas Panic originally intended it in the "Independent" film sense that you also took it to mean. Hey look, you're both right! Now everyone's happy.

In my opinion everything is somewhat fantasy because it is all coming out of our heads and our imagintions which in a sense could only be a fantasy unless we are all suddenly able to go build our parks in real-life. I think it comes down to the first post in this topic where it says it depends on location. Obviously a realistic park wouldn't be built in some abandoned Mexican village in the middle of nowhere because in real life, nobody would wan't to travel that far to a park.

You'd be surprised. Holiday World is surrounded by corn and abandoned barns, yet it remains quite popular. People have come all the way from Mississippi to visit for a weekend.

Don't be an ass. Holiday World is within comfortable driving distance for days trips (<4 hours) from Indianapolis and Cincinnati, plus it's not at all of an unreasonable weekend trip from just about anywhere in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, or Illinois... Not to mention St. Louis. Plus Holiday World is a rather exceptional park. Very family oriented and yet they also have my #2 wooden (and overall) coaster in The Voyage. Love the hilly landscape down there too.

^Maybe people want a heirarchy because they feel one already exists. I remember when I first saw one of the big parkmaker's (for example, Six Frags or Kumba) works. I immediately knew that I was at the bottom of any list, even if there wasn't one. That's when I started working harder. In my mind, there was a heirarchy. And I wanted to be at the top of the heirarchy (and still do).

I remember thinking this way when I joined. You'll discover at about the time that you reach the "top" of that so called hierarchy that there isn't really one. It's set in place by the competitive environment of New Element designed to keep everyone interested and productive. If anything I with I could still get excited about the idea of "moving up" because by your system I must be one of the weakest parkmakers since I don't have a spotlight to my credit. Credentials aren't everything (Bayfront Parc doesn't = Spotlight Kumba, you know as well as I do that it's too inconsistent).

    QUOTE(Phatage @ May 20 2007, 12:52 PM) *
realism sucks, because real life sucks for each of us, so that's why we spend all our time building these parks, so we should all build fantasy

My real life is awesome- I make movies, have lots of friends, currently have Cedar Fair Maxx Passes, and all that good junk.

But wait- are you saying that everyone here are nerds (no offense) and have miserable lives because of that? If so, I may be posting in the wrong place...

EDIT: That hierarchy idea is exactly whats driving me to become better and I hope one day I'll be somewhere at the top. I guess I look up to all the parkmakers (for their skills, not necessarily their attitudes)and later, I want new people to look up to me.

I think this argument leads to the production of poor parks. If your basis for building a park is "realism" or "fantasy," then youve got the wrong idea....you should build parks to create good experiences...whether its realistic or fantasy shouldnt matter.
  • lucas92%s's Photo
^That's what I tried to make them understand previously... :|
  • Fatha'%s's Photo
When you bind yourself by rules (Being realisitic, being fantasy), you ultimately just lower the ceiling for the true greatness of your park...same goes if u build in just one style or limit yourself in that way.

Your steps for building a great themed area are as follows:

    1. Get a vision
    2. Achieve that vision in EVERY way you imagined.
    3. Dont let anything stop you from getting there.

Realism and fantasy really have NOTHING to do with it.

Wow this is definately a "peaceful discussion"

Anyway there was this one genre thing we learned in school called magical realism. Its like where its mostly realistic except for a few fantasy stuff which aren't identified as fantasy. I didnt really understand it completely but maybe like a park in space that is completely realistic except for that its in space. So maybe instead of being somewhere between, they can be on both sides at the same time.

magic-realism really sucks ... they try to sound creepy but at the end the story just isn't complete and they let you imagine the rest ... it should be the same as build the foundation of every coaster and building but than stop and let people imagine the rest.
