Watched my local news for about 4 hours last night. They had pretty much unbroken coverage of a gunman that went on a rampage and shot 9 people before police shot him. The mall was pretty crowded, about 1000 people had to be evacuated. So far there are 5 dead (six including the gunman) and four in critical condition at local hospitals. One of the dead was a 15 year old girl, one of the injured a 16 year old male.

What is this world coming to. There had always been talks of what if a terrorist just started shooting in a mall. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that this was a terrorist attack by any means. Just that the security issue is still the same. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this horrible tragedy. -

I'm only about 3 miles from the mall. Pretty scary. I want them to release the names, I may know some of the victims. -

What's the difference? Whether it's a normal guy, or a terrorist, the consequences are the same. -

I think the norm for many people these days is to picture a foreigner of some sort when they hear the word terrorist. In actuallity, anybody that causes 'terror' is a terrorist. This kid was definately a terrorist. He may or may not have been 'fighting' for a cause, as in organized terrorism, but as Mark states, the effects are the same. -

Wow.
just... wow.
I hate living in the states.
don't get me wrong, I support the hell outa my country, but i think i'de rather live somewhere safer.
like antarctica. it's fairly safe there, isnt it? a bit cold, but safe.
anyway, my uncle is a higher ranking police official, and he has seen the the list of top ten most likely places for terrorists to attack.
the ohio valley is number six, i think, becuase of all the power plants, steel mills, factories, the nuclear plant... it's scary.
I hate to think about what the world is coming to.
ok.. well.. rant over.

^South America seems pretty calm, I think Brazil would be nice. Plus, advantage to living in small town in northeastern Connecticut. Well, actually, there IS the Groton Sub Base, but that's about an hour from where I live. -

Uh, not really.
Anyway... there's something to be said about living in a rural area...

rofl, no. maybe brazil or argentina.
you could always go live on an island. like New Zealand. no, somewhere smaller.. somewhere in Micronesia. great scenery, large enough to support the islanders if the rest of the world goes to hell.. yeah, seems like a plan. -

you're saying this might be a normal guy that did not terrorize?
No, thats not what I meant. Like Todd Lee said, "the norm for many people these days is to picture a foreigner of some sort when they hear the word terrorist." What I meant that this wasn't an organized terror group planning the attack. It was my poor phrasing that implied that wrong. This kid was a terrorist, no doubt about it.
I think that this photo from the AP gets the point and feeling of the whole situation without saying anything:
That image is causing some controversy locally, I think you all can tell why. -

Yes, one wackjob shoots people at a mall means that the whole of American society has gone to pot! What an unsafe country we live in. People are shooting up malls like every day (sometimes twice).Wow.

STOP LIVING IN FEAR, IDIOTS. I don't care if you live five miles from a nuclear power plant, there are still a thousand things more likely to kill you than terrorists. Fox News doesn't tell you about many of those though. -

South America is not a stable continent. South America tries to emulate the North American standard, but they do not have the funding or the thought power to accomplish it to the same level. It all looks nice from a distance, but the inner workings of the whole thing are wraught with issues. They have major social problems, lots of poverty and lots of crime problems (Mostly due to the large presence of drug lords). Granted, South American countries have over the past few years been able to gain control of guerrlias which is something to be commended. Follow this link to get an idea. Now, no where in the world is safe, period. Don't let Fox News, CNN, your President or your country's ludicrious lawyers and court cases instill the idea upon you that a utopian land exists where nothing ever goes wrong. -

To the contrary, Nate. Our whole country is in a constant state of fear, not because of terrorists, but because of media that constantly reminds of us of every little thing that could possibly go wrong, and inflates the stats until we're too scared to move.
A couple of years back, they started talking about how child vaccinations can cause cancer in some children, and mothers stopped vaccinating their kids. Polio came back for a while.
Yes, I know it's Michael Moore, but watch Bowling for Columbine.
