How many people here play guitar?
  • ekimmel%s's Photo
I do. I've been compared to Eric Clapton and John Petrucci.

    At the same time! wow.

    ^LMAO. Is that even possible?

I play guitar but I'm not yet good enough to really gain compairisons to others. I'm pretty good rhythm, not so great lead.

And those guitarists are sick because they're so skilled and yet for the most part reasonibly tasteful about their playing...

Most of the comparisons sound like "That doesn't even sound like Clapton!" but....oh well!

I played for about 5 years in college then quit and just started playing again recently. I can pick up most songs but sometimes it takes a while -- especially for the solos. I mostly play Priest and Maiden but I also do some classic rock like Clapton, Joe Walsh, and Van Halen. I hate all new songs that are written in Drop D tuning (which is most nu metal) because it's a pain in the ass.

I play a Fender Strat through either a Boss Metal Zone or a Boss OD2 Overdrice/Distortion to an old Crate 40w amp.

If I can mic up my computer maybe I'll upload some stuff.

Yeah i play, been playing for nearly six years now. I play a Jackson DKMGT through a Line Six Spider II 210 (120 Watt) amp.

Incredible guitar, and dropped D doesn't suck. I prefer dropped C personally. :D

Dropped C is too low for me, I prefer Dropped D, because it's common, or Dropped D and then half down because that's what Funeral play at, and it sounds cool.

I currently have a Vintage V100, and a Boston Stratocaster. I got a random acoustic, and an Esquire Bass guitar. I'm looking for a decent Telecaster at the moment though, and gonna get one asap.

I love Hellraisers but my next guitar will be a C-1 Elite. Hellraiser a little too extreme for some of the music I play.

And Drop D sucks badly. I know it's all trendy and stuff (and they're all really just copying Helmet who pioneered it in metal) but I still hate it. And, yes, I do know some older songs like Bad Company's "Bad Company" use it. That's how they get that nasty sounding chord where it goes "Baaaaad Company <then the chord> 'til the day I diiiieeee".

    Anyhow...

I prefer D standard. I get a pretty chunky tone from it. I tend to stay away from dropped tunings because it totally screws me up when I'm playing something I know in D or E standard.

D tuning is okay for the type of song you want to play. I don't mind it, I think it's easier than E though it does sound heavier which I don't really like. You can always just translate, for example, a barred power chord in D, into a normal power chord in E. They sound virtually the same.

Oh, and I have basically the same exact guitar as ride6 does in his signature, minus the ridiculous pickups. Same color though, I think. How'd you get a picture of it anyway, Jon?
