General Chat / Flash Drives

As much as this site has helped, I'm still technologically impaired. I got a 1G Flash drive a couple of days ago, and when I tried to save to it, there wasn't a folder or place that came up to save it to. Where do you go to save stuff on a flash drive?

    Thanks in Advance. :)

most should auto-format... however if it didnt i believe you can go to (assuming you run WinXP)
my Computer/whatever letter your drive is, right click and find format, reformat... or... something.
i'll check and be right back.

edit: yes. go to my computer while the flash drive is connected, and right-click it. find "format" and hit that.
most of the stuff should fill in automatically on the menu that pops up, i'm pretty sure you'll want NTFS as a file system. Then just hit start and wait...then hopefully folders show up afterwards.

yes, NTFS file system is the way to got, FAT32 was the old one, that is not supported in many places anymore.

Also, as far as the "folder" you were looking to save to, you wont have any folders on the flash dirve at first, youll have to create some.

oh yeah. could be that. -.-

I think he means right click on the flash drive Icon, either in "My Computer", or in "Windows Explorer"

If tis working properly then when you first put the drive in in XP then it will come up with a found new hardware bubble, and some other shit. Then in my computer it will come up as removable disk (J) or something liek that depending on what other drives youve got.

Uhm, FAT systems are still quite common, especially on flashdrives/usb-sticks and every computer running Windows 98.

Anyway, every flashdisk you plug in should be recognized as new hardware. If that's succesfully you should be able to access it through My Computer. If that doesn't work try reformatting the drive as suggested. If it still doesn't work after that try it on a different computer. If it still doesn't work after that, it's quite safe to say it's broken and try to claim your warranty.

Um, I knew that, thanks ;)

Ok. I tried it on another computer and it worked easily. Just like you said. The drive it was given is E:/. I plug it in here and it says that the E:/ drive is empty. I try to format it and it still says the E:/ drive is empty. What now? :<img src=:' />

What operating systems did each of the 2 computers have?
  • Gwazi%s's Photo
    You mean Windows XP?
  • Carl%s's Photo
Yeah, what versions of Windows did they have? Were they both WinXP? Cause if they were, then the jump drive should have been handled the same way on each computer.

Yeah, they both were. When I first put in the 1G drive to this computer, it said something about software being installed that could be dangerous to my computer. So it said that it recommended to stop installation, so I did. Now, every time I put the flash drive into my computer after that, the E:/ drive that should have it should have shown up in says that the flash drive isn't there.

OK, so your virus protection blocked the install, no big deal, ive had that happen too. Now you need to re-start the install process manually. Did the flash drive come with a CD-ROM? If so, insert that and see if anything automatically pops up on the screen. If nothing pops up, you'll need to go to My Computer and find the CD-Rom drive and find the "setup.exe" (or something like that) file on the CD-ROM and double click that to start the install process manually.

You dont need to format the drive if tis picked it up, and theres nothing on there. From then on you can wake your shit onto it via drag and drop or save as....

    It didn't come with a CD-rom. :(
What do I do in that case?

It hasn't picked it up, if I understand what you're saying.

Sorry for all this trouble, guys, but you're my only help with this right now...

    OK, try this:

Right click on "My Computer" on your desktop, and click on "Properties"

Then click on the "Hardware" Tab, then click on the "Device Manager" button.

Then see if there are any devices with a yellow exclamation point on them. IF there is one, right click on it and see if you can install that way.

Ok, well, I uninstalled it, so it worked like I had just put the drive in for the first time. Yet, here is what is says about the installation:

The software you are installing for this hardware:

    USB Mass Storage Device

has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.

Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing.

What should I do about this?
