I have had no problems with my 3 year old HP laptop. Infact I haven't had to contact hp once. But for college I'm definately getting a MacBook Pro but if I had to get another PC laptop I would go with a ThinkPad everyone my dad has had for work has been excellent to use and the battery never seems to die.

ThinkPads are indeed quite stable, but I'm under the impression that if you need a laptop that can handle some major processing power (for example, if your major requires constant use of Photoshop or 3DS or video editing software), an IBM wouldn't be the best choice, since it's not as good in raw power performance.

Correct me if I'm wrong tho.

I have a Dell too and IMO there's nothing wrong with it. My graphics cards was fried though because of some mistake by Dell though and I was not the first with exactly the same system. They placed my soundcard directly next to my vid-card which meant the thing didn't get enough cool air. Quite dumb if you see the massive windtunnel that was on the processor. However when I called Dell I had someone on the line very quickly compared to some other helpdesks I had to deal with. I was helped pretty good although I have to admit that preperation about the problem could have helped here since I usually was ahead of his questions. My card was replaced in next working day, so kudos to that.
One of the first times I actually felt serviced well although I was happy that our system came with 3 years of warranty which isn't always standard on every system and concerning the card blew after 16 months...
Only thing I mind in my system is the somewhat low 250W powersupply, since it means I have to replace it since I want to upgrade my vid-card to a 7800GS. Unfortunately it means that I have to cut a small hole in the back of my case because the average PSU has an on/off switch on the back... Nothing really serious, but just a bit impractical if you ask me.

I've got an HP Laptop and it's awesome. Haven't had any problems with it, but then again, I've only had it for about 6 months

I have a Dell desktop which has done pretty well too.

So when buying my next computer, I wouldn't be bothered about chosing Dell or HP

Cork: My Dad's ThinkPads have always been more then enough to edit things in Photoshop and to do some #D stuff but I never rendered on it so I guess I never put one to the test.

With that mentalility you shouldn't buy ANYTHING.

Dell is just a reseller of computer parts -- they just happen to be assembled into a computer. My local computer store can do the same thing. It costs a little more but I can call a local phone number for tech support, I can drive over there for a replacement part, and all the money (outside of the money he has to pay for his parts) stays local.

As for HP, many of the programmers here have HP laptops (the business class ones) and they've been flawless.

In the commercial insurance industry, I deal with helping people replace all sorts of computer equipment every day. In particular, a lot of laptops, which seems to be the most popular item to steal these days. I'd say about 60% of all computers being bought today are Dells, followed by Apple, HP, Toshiba, Sony, IBM, Fujitsu and Gateway. Price-wise, Apple, Sony, IBM, Fujitsu and Toshiba are the most expensive. HP and Dell are by far the least expensive. Quality-wise, I'd have to say that Toshiba and Apple laptops are probably the best, but only if you're willing to pay an arm and a leg for one. (Apple notebooks start at like $1500)

I personally own a Dell now (desktop). I've only had one minor problem with the monitor, but I gave up trying to get it fixed because of Dell's terrible customer service. Calling them is a nightmare and their chat support isn't much better. I suppose if you get the correct person, its ok (as you experienced Joey), but my experience with them has been just horrible. Its so bad, that I'm willing to put up with my defective monitor rather than deal with them. Their computers aren't bad at all though. Mine has been great thus far.

I'm happy with my dell, but not the bullshit software they included with it. (it doesn't even have fucking MSWord. Instead, they decided to put in Corel Word Perfect, which is about as useful as their customer service) Also, I ordered a Windows back-up CD, for an extra $20 I think, so I could wipe the hard drive and start fresh without Dell's spyware, but they never sent it to me, despite two weeks of conversations with random Indians that had no idea what Dell's policies were.

Thanks for that address, Brucky. I'll have to sign you up for some newsletters.

Yes, that's exactly it. In fact, when I tell girls, "Hey I have the fourth most posts of ANYONE at nedesigns.com, that's an immediate turn on and they start making out with me on the spot. It's also made me tremendously popular and idolized by everyone. When I walk down the street, I hear people say, "Whoa there's the guy with all those New Element posts..." It's kind of a big deal. Try it some time. You'll get more tail. Seriously.

So thats a yes then? although it still doesnt explain the completely useless post. What other possible reason would you post that first post other than to increase your post count....? please enlighten us....

I'm sure dell desktops are fine but the Inspiron Laptop Series is shocking. the 3.2ghz versions are sold while knowingly overheating... thats a pretty serious problem in my books.

I'm sorry for causing you stress. Please forgive me.

ps Desouza is a Portuguese name. If they're outsourcing tech support to Portugal, every Dell owner in the world is fucking screwed.

I'm not trying to start an argument but the fact that there was a fault in the first place can't be a good thing...

I never said it was bad. I say it was good. Cos it made my comp clean and got rid of hald the shit i had before. I aint a dell hater ;)
  • JBruckner%s's Photo
Yeah man. I gotta reformat this. It came with 70 processes on startup. While I have a beast of a computer just those processes alone eat up 300 megs of memory. I will reformat it as soon as I get the new one.

Or perhaps you were being vague in not listing the problem explicitly?
If it's a dead pixel error, then that is common, yes...

Light leak, which is common on LCDs. Is when there sides of the LCD are brigther (or seem like light is getting) than the center.

Same problem with the one that came today. Took 5 min for them to send me a new one.
