General Chat / what are you politically?

  • cg?%s's Photo
i found this today, although i'm not sure how old it is. it's basically a little quiz by the pew research center, based upon random polling of american citizens, that places you within 9 distinct political ideologies which, supposedly, make up the full spectrum of american politics today.

you can learn about them here, and can take the quiz here.

please post what the quiz says you are, what you say you are, and your answers:

the quiz says i'm a "disaffected", and i agree, more or less, although some things i take exception to, especially about being uninformed, and uninterested in politics.

    01. "government is almost always wasteful and inefficient.": strongly agree.

    02. "government regulation of business is necessary to protect the public interest.": strongly disagree.

    03. "poor people today have it easy because they can get government benefits without doing anything in return.": disagree.

    04. "the government should do more to help needy Americans, even if it means going deeper into debt.": strongly agree.

    05. "immigrants today strengthen our country because of their hard work and talents.": disagree.

    06. "the best way to ensure peace is through military strength.": strongly disagree.

    07. "we should all be willing to fight for our country, whether it is right or wrong.": strongly disagree.

    08. "most people who want to get ahead can make it if they're willing to work hard.": disagree.

    09. "success in life is pretty much determined by forces outside of our control.": agree.

    10. "too much power is concentrated in the hands of a few large companies.": strongly agree.

    11. "business corporations make too much profit.": strongly agree.

    12. "elected officials in Washington lose touch with the people pretty quickly.": strongly agree.

    13. "most elected officials care what people like me think.": strongly disagree.

    14. "this country should do whatever it takes to protect the environment": strongly agree.

    15. "stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy.": strongly agree.

    16. "homosexuality is a way of life that should be accepted by society.": strongly agree.

    17. "books that contain dangerous ideas should be banned from public school libraries.": strongly disagree.

    18. "religion is a very important part of my life.": strongly agree.

    19. "i'm generally satisfied with the way things are going for me financially.": agree.

    20. "i often don't have enough money to make ends meet.": disagree.

    21. "it IS NOT necessary to believe in God in order to be moral and have good values.": agree.

    22. "using overwhelming military force is the best way to defeat terrorism around the world.": strongly disagree.

    23. "the growing number of newcomers from other countries threaten traditional american customs and values.": agree.

    24. "it’s best for the future of our country to be active in world affairs.": strongly disagree.

    25. "the government should do more to protect morality in society.": strongly disagree.

"in politics today, do you consider yourself a republican, democrat, or independent?": independent.

"in general, would you describe your political views as very conservative, conservative, moderate, liberal or very liberal?": conservative.

    I got Enterpriser.

Frankly I think the whole test is shit simply for the fact that its sees a strong difference between Democrats and Republicans.

I was liberal, but I personally didn't like the test since I really was in the neutral mode concerning several questions.... and you can't answer neutral...
  • tracidEdge%s's Photo
    liberal.
  • postit%s's Photo
Yeah, there were 2 questions that I'm smack in the middle on, so I do wish there was a neutral choice.

I got liberal. Interesting test. It's not perfect but it is generally pretty accurate.
  • cg?%s's Photo
they couldn't put a "nuetral" or "neither" choice as the vast majority of people would pick those on the vast majority of questions and the entire quiz would be worthless.

I got disaffected. I don't really fit the description though. I think what happened was that I usually chose agree/disagree for if I felt about neutral on a subject, and strongly agree/disagree for if I had more of an opinion. Since I usually don't have really strong opinions on politics.

Anyways, I took it again and changing my answers a bit and I got liberal. I think the problem is that I really don't care about a lot of the answers. The ones about people being able to succeed if they try hard enough? How should I know? Ehrenreich tells me they're screwed, but I honestly have no experience. Any answer I come up with would just come from what the media tells me.
  • Zooby%s's Photo
I'm the same as Xcoaster, I didn't really fit the description. And I chose some randomly because there wasn't a neither button.

these are the issues and ideas which are shaping our current political landscape, and there is no way to be involved in politics today without having an opinion on them. maybe your not involved in politics? if that's true, you probably shouldn't be taking the quiz, although it's also true your result should probably have been "bystander".

the question about people "suceeding if they try hard enough" is really linked to the ideal that america has a system were people can be anything they want if they try, and that poor people are just lazy and worthless. that's an idea gaining popularity and shaping a lot of our current domestic social policy.
  • thorpedo%s's Photo
    liberal, of course.
  • penguinBOB%s's Photo
I'm an Upbeat... I fit the description fairly well, except I don't really like the preemptive strike idea.
  • Ge-Ride%s's Photo
I got disaffected, but the only description that fit me was that I didn't care about what's on the news.
  • Xenon%s's Photo
Conservative, I guess I'm not a true Rhode Islander.
