The difference between Shrek and the ones you mentioned is that all of your examples were intended to have 3+ parts before the first was ever made. Shrek is one of the unfortunate successful films that was written as one film and then beaten and raped until every shred of appeal was removed by half-assed sequels. There have been plenty of trilogies where the first film isn't the always the best. Lord of the Rings? Bourne series?
I could argue that I even like Return of the Jedi more than New Hope sometimes, but that is probably pushing it.
Jade:
Kind of stupid. Completely lost interest a few times, had to take a few breaks to get through it. It seems like they tried to make the movie rely on the mystery of some crazy art collector that ran a prostitution business out of his beach house, but it really didn't have much beyond that and ended up playing like a bad episode of CSI, especially since they star the same lead. Didn't notice sound track during action sequences, and a pretty shitty score by James Horner wrapped this one up for a movie I wouldn't recommend. Acting was decent.
Apocalypse Now:
Beautiful vision of the illogical behaviour and stupidity that goes on in war. Gets way too out there at times. Plot line was a bit hard to follow at the end, but I can't stomach watching all 3.5 hours again in one sitting to figure out all the symbols, motives, and whatever the fucks Coppola was playing off of. Acting was pretty good, music score was pretty strange. There was a whole lot of things left unsaid for such a long movie. -

Just got back from seeing Avatar. Greatest 2.5 hours of my life! (Aside from going to KI and getting my hands on KH: 358/2 Days.)
Seriously, if you have not seen this movie, then you should go see it right now! Just stop what you're doing, go to your nearest theatre and buy tickets to see this movie. NOW! It's fucking EPIC! -

I don't think getting laid would take 2.5 hours, foreplay included.
But it was still an awesome movie. -

Saw Avatar last Friday...we're thinking about going and seeing it in IMAX 3D as well. To those that have seen it in IMAX 3D, is it worth it? -

Yes, definately
Its not a normal 3d where everything jumps out at you, its more like you feel your right there -

Yeah, gir, it's an amazing experience. Take my advice, and don't sit in the front row. My "smart" friends decided to come late and that's the only spot available. It didn't ruin the movie, mainly because I love it so much, but it definitely wasn't as good as it was the first time. Either way, that was the last I saw, and it was, most assuredly, my favorite movie of 2009, barely beating Transformers 2, a feat I thought was impossible. -

It is. I thought the same but was blown away by the actual film. I saw it in 3d so that added to the experience. -

I saw Avatar a few weeks ago. It was good. Not the piece of cinematic sex it has been made out to be, but whatever. I paid ten bucks to be entertained for three hours. I'll take it. It was a really interesting story and the visuals were great, especially in 3-D. Thumbs up from me. 8/10.
I also watched The Wrestler last week for the second time. Now that is a great movie. Mickey Rourke as Randy The Ram is one of the best performances I've ever seen. 10/10 for sure. -

I dont like 3D films though,i feel they usually only use the 3D aspect of the film if the film is shit.If it wasnt in 3d with highly detailed CGI would it be any good? -

RRP come on man I know you're not stupid. Don't judge a movie by its trailer.
Book of Eli. Wow can you say worst movie ever? Why make a movie where there is two hours of slow motion, nothing happening, and Denzel Washington becoming a bald, blind, monk prophet?
