General Chat / King Kong

    Trivial knowledge:

The insect- and slug-scene is a remake of a scene that was in the original cut of the 1930's version of King Kong, but was edited out after parts of the audience fainted from it during a preview showing. Funny to see how desensitised people have become; despite fantastic CGI, I didn't really react to that scene all that much.

So. Great movie, definitely. Definitely appealed to the 12-year old in me: "King Kong fights one, no TWO, no THREE T-Rex!" Very amusing in how over the top it was, which felt kind of cool. It wasn't annoyingly stupid as so many other blockbuster-style movies are, but it didn't try to be smarter than it was either - it was just a really cool monster movie with lots of special effects. I could even overlook how most of the acting was just people going "Aagh!" (or variations thereof) because it was so entertaining and beautifully done.

My favourite special effect was the entire city of New York, because of how amazingly well done it was, without taking the spotlight. Things like that is really more impressive than the stuff they just display to show how cool it is.

In summary, fantastic movie. Must be seen in the cinema to be fully appreciated, I think - the special effects would lose a lot of their power on a small living-room TV.

Dude anyone notice how entirerly phallic those bugs were? I thought the bug scene was beyond beliefe, I don't see how you couldn't react to it, janus?
  • Janus%s's Photo
I did notice the resemblance, yes. Pretty interesting - maybe it's just me, but I found a lot of sexual innuendos in the entire movie. I could go deeper into that if anyone wants me to, but I suppose I shouldn't.

As for the bug scene, I didn't find really get scared by it - my reaction was more based on how I was expected to react than how I actually reacted. Hard to explain. The giant bugs in the movie just wasn't as freaky as I'd expected giant bugs to be. I suppose I have seen too much scary things in movies, or that I'm just kind of detached. Maybe it was just the extreme exaggeration - I did find the scene where the girl is hiding inside the tree trunk with the large caterpillars to be a little bit creepy.

By the way, did anyone else start to completely over-think the entire concept of giant animals? Like, if they are larger, then they should have larger brains and therefore higher brain capacity, meaning higher intelligence... Also, wouldn't giant humans or insect-sized bacteria have been really cool?
  • JBruckner%s's Photo
I dunno about the brainsize thing. I'm curious though, talk about the innuendo.

I found some innuedo too; Naomi Watts is fucking gorgeous, and she has amazing boobs. I don't know how it's possible not to notice with all of those down shirt shots.

PS Bruckner: You're such a pussy.
  • JBruckner%s's Photo
Yeah you know it. What exactly are you reffering to though?

Peter Jackson doesn't care about black people.

They broke my heart.  I laughed and clapped along witht the laughter scene and there was an undeniable warmth in my heart during the icerink scene.  I never wanted it to end.

Well, that's just this thread anyways. Not that I'm not one myself. God I have no life. I shouldn't have deleted my myspace right before the holidays.

I took my two little brothers to see it. I thought it was cool. I still think they should have taken a dinosaur. It did seem a bit long at times, but I was also loaded up on Mello Yellow. Here's a question though: Why do dinosaurs in movies, even in JP, always go after humans despite already having a much larger kill?

It's not just brain size, it's the brain to body size ratio.

Yeah, you'd think after all the processed foods and perfume that'd it'd be like eating a stringy, vain gorilla fetus. That's a gross description.

And I'm definately glad all th interactions between Kong and any dino were a longer than I thought originally. The part where the long-necks didn't all fall off the cliff and went into another part of the canyon; the part where after the sharp-teeth and Kong fell off the cliffs and got stuck in the vines and fought there; the extended sharp-teeth v. Kong fight scene (those beasts are tough). Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, although it started a bit slow, but it picked up after that and never looked back. I loved how Jackson made everything longer and didn't stop where almost all other movies stopped. Sure to be a classic and win many, many awards.

    **MILD SPOILERS AHEAD**

Being the cynical that I am, I walked through the theatre expecting nothing more than three hours of junk entertainment (yes, even thought it's the high and mighty PJ. I never liked LotR)... You know, at first glance, I thought my predicitions were true. Boy was I wrong! This movie is beyond belief. Never knew anyone could make me feel that attached to a monkey (that doesn't talk :p ).

The film was totally gripping. From the moment they got onto that island, everything moved at a wonderful pace. The intimate moments between Kong and Ann were great, and the icerink scene was truelly moving. It was all worth it, just to see those famous end scenes, and to experience the tragic outcome. BTW, to the people who replied on those giant "slug things", I believe they were actually meant to be giant leeches.

Anyway, back to the review. As much as I liked the film, it was far from perfect. Some scenes dragged on, and some scenes were totally blah. Some island scenes (like the dino rampage, and the bugs scene) were totally out of place and did nothing to progress the story or the characters. However cool the bugs were, they just didn't fit in the film (at least in those specific moments). I did like however, the moment were Ann was stuck in a log with some nasty creatures. Gave me the shivers. Much of the first act could also have been trimmed. While almost every scene has its purpose, each and every scene had that "finish with me now" sign hanging above them by the end of it.

Overall, a great experience. When blockbuster fun meets intellegent movie-making, you get a genuinely awesome movie! 9.5/10

Not going to read everything, don't wanna spoil the movie...

I think i'm going to see this movie in the theatre, it sounds awesome to see in a theatre. and the occasional once in two or three months theatre visit could definitely make its way into my life! ;P. Anyways, i don't think it's playing yet, here.

Went to see it last night. Fucking awesome movie, shame I was sat nextto a lady friend who kept jumping and covering her face with her hands.

The slug thingys gave me the creeps, especially the one which grabbed the cooks head.

The way Kong killed the T-Rex was good, biting out its tongue, brilliant.

I thought the end scene with the skyscraper was intense, I kept thinking to myself "please don't slip off, please!"

    Hm, a definite DVD purchase.

Hmm, I'm seeing this on Wednesday though I have a hard time imagining that it'll be anything but a letdown at this point. Maybe I should have seen it opening night with all of the other nerds, but I couldn't bring myself to care enough. And now, after seeing Paradise Now, Syriana, and Brokeback Mountain; some CG adventure-fest, no matter how skillfull and fun it may be, just seems shallow and boring in comparison. It's just too safe. It's not dangerous enough, and that makes it boring. And boring and entertaining rarely go together. Well, we'll see.
  • JBruckner%s's Photo
Syriana, hrm, post in my thread!
  • Jellybones%s's Photo
I really wanted to see Syriana but one of my friends said it sucked. He said something about it being too confusing, and being complex only for the sake of being complex, or something like that.

Awesome movie. I saw it Friday night. I still don't like how Kong was on all fours unlike the previous versions, but I really didn't notice during the movie. Now if only Fox had done Godzilla this good...
