im suprised no one mentioned The Fountain. although it doesnt have a release date yet, the trailer just came out and it looks really cool. Darren Aronofksy is also an interesting director. i didnt care for Requiem For A Dream at all but i really enjoyed Pi. this seems like its going to be more thrilling than the other two so im looking forward to it. -

I dunno. I guess you are really affected by the intention of movies. I don't think PJ makes movies just for the money. But, that might not be what you are saying?
Oh, well when I mentioned King Kong as one of those movies that looks like it will disappoint, that's mostly because of what mantis said. They give away the whole movie in the trailer. Which I guess is logical in a certain line of thinking. It is a remake after all, that old movie is out there if I wanted to see it first. And maybe I will now to appreciate what PJ has done better. I read Lord of the Rings before seeing those movies afterall, and that didn't screw those up. King Kong does look great, but whether I'll like it or not depends a great deal on whether it's just a special effects extravanza (which I'm sure will be amazing) or if there's actually something touching and human in there I can relate to. As far as movie people go, I'm not one who goes looking just for entertainment. I expect a lot more out of movies than that. Which often leaves me disappointed, but when I do see something that really affects me (like Paradise Now for example) it's that much more exhilirating.
Oh and for Narnia and Geisha, most of why I'm unsure about those is the same reason I'm unsure about King Kong. Surely they're going to be visually exciting. Will they also be emotionally stimulating? I'm pretty skeptical about that. Usually with big-profile projects like this, the human element gets lost somewhere along the line. I do hope I'm pleasantly surprised though.
Oh and I almost mentioned The Fountain, but didn't because I still don't know very much about it. The trailer is intriguing though, if only because of the bizarre visual imagery of that oak tree in the water. My interest is definately piqued for that one. -

Superman Returns
I think it comes out in the summer though.
And I just saw the trailer for The Fountain. Looks pretty interesting. -

I think I like the look of both, and I wonder which will end up being the better film. In terms of story, I'm re-reading Narnia, now on LW&W, as I've not read them since I was in 5th grade...which would be +-2 or 3 years of when many of you were born (1988).
Anyway, its amazing how much I didn't remember. I look forward to the rest of the novels to see how much seems new. The point is though that if you really want to compare Rings to Potter to Narnia, there isn't a case at all. Rings is far more complex, Potter is getting increasingly so, and while I still have 5.5 books to re-read in Narnia, the writing style is definately the simplest of the three. I somehow wonder what they'll expand on in LW&W to get to the supposed 2 hrs, whereas each of the next few Potters are easy 2.5-3 hrs flicks...
I'm just glad I've been around long enough to see all 6 Star Wars and 3 Rings movies...
Should be fun!

Ed, you make it seem as if movies are not supposed to be about entertainment? When I go to see movies I see then for entertainment, but most of the time you I'll also get beautiful artistic direction.
I would be curious to see some of your traditional art preferences, to see if you really are a hoity-toity art bastard. -

Well I didn't say that there's anything wrong with entertainment. But the more you know about anything, the more you expect from it. Like coasters for example. When I didn't know anything about coasters I could go to Paramount's Great America and ride Vortex and Top Gun and Tidal Wave and have a good time. Than when I rode a lot more coasters and read a lot about them, those coasters seemed less interesting to me and less entertaining. I came to expect more and what was entertaining before became boring. That's happened to me with movies too. I just have seen so many that most of them seem shallow and uninteresting. The only ones that actually entertain me anymore are the ones that do something new and interesting. I try not to be a hoity-toity art bastard about it. If a movie works for you, if it entertains you or excites you or enlightens you, than it's a good movie. It just takes a lot more for those things to work for me anymore. Like Boomerang. At one time I probably would have enjoyed riding a Boomerang, but now I'd rather ride nothing at all than ride one of those. That's all it is really. Maybe I was better off before, but there's no going back now. -

I saw an extended King Kong trailer before HP today and I enjoyed it more. I'll reserve proper judgement until after i've seen the film, obviously.
I also saw a trailer for some film called Fun With Dick or something. It was unintentionally side-splitting... "MEET DICK!" -

Dick and Jane, yeah, that looks great.
I'm not tryingto rat on your Ed, I am just very curious to find out about why it's so hard for you to like a lot of the movies I really enjoy. Now I know. -

I take back what I said about this movie.
Obviously it's one the best HP movie, and probably the best fantasy movie this year. I was definitely surprised. Great stuff.
Oh. And, the Lady In The Water teaser music is to die for! I was so excited to see that Paul Giamatti will be in the movie.Edited by Geoff, 23 November 2005 - 04:58 PM.

Yeah, I was reading a Daniel Radcliffe interview in Rollingstone and he said he was really nervous around them, etc. -

That's kindof funny actually, because I remember the band at that dance sounding embarassingly bad. Probably intentionally so. -

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 trailer (thanks to Westcoaster.net for the heads up).
I swear I saw Cthulhu in pirate garb. Maybe it was a Quarren that escaped from Star Tours. But I'm certain I saw I a giant squid tentacle, ala, 20,000 Leagues, so I suppose anything's possible.
Anyways, I'm calling it. Those islanders called up the Deep Ones, Jack was going to be their sacrifice, but he escaped, and now Jack Sparrow's curse is that he now owes the fishmen, some, uh.... -
Corkscrewed Offline
I thought the curse was that Jack owed a life debt or something to the infamous Davy Jones and now the ghost is calling it in or something...
I haven't watched the trailer yet, and as I'm rendering at the moment, downloading a trailer probably isn't the wisest thing.
