Okay, The Chronicles Narnia is going to kick Harry Potter 4 in the ass so bad, that it's not even funny. -

DUDE KING KING ROCKS THE WORLD. Nah, I'm just excited for it.
Actually, you are sorley wrong. Narnina is going to suck as much as the books did, Harry Potter is going kick its ass. -

^ Okay first off, this Harry Potter has theee cheesiest soundtrack it's hard to take any of it seriously. Nothing about it seems epic to me, like Narnia does. I loved The Goblet of Fire book, but this movie is just going to destroy it. -

I concur. I liked the books. Though Harry Potter 4 will probably do well because it's Harry Potter and stuff. Meh.Okay, The Chronicles Narnia is going to kick Harry Potter 4 in the ass so bad, that it's not even funny.
I noticed yesterday that there are two movies coming out this winter about female vampires. Weird. http://www.rottentom...ws/2005/winter/ -

Have you even seen the trailers for Narnia? It's just a cheap Lord of the Rings cash-in, with cheesy effects and lame art direction. I was excited about this movie right up until they actually released footage from it, and, now, with every second of new footage I see, the less new footage I want to see.
Harry Potter, on the other hand, looks awesome to me. It will probably be the best of the series, or, at least, right behind the last one, which is currently the best, I think.
But where are all the good independant movies? It's sort of become a new outlet for Oscar-bait, hasn't it? Nothing more than a bunch of boring cliches. It's been going that way for a while, but I've been in denial, unfortunitely, I can't deny it any longer. There's always been movies which rose above the boredom, but I can't think of a single one this year. Was Brown Bunny this year? No, last year, right? Along with 'Saddest music in the world', and a few others. There isn't a 'Brown Bunny' or 'Saddest music in the world' this year, is there?
I just looked in the IMDB 'Indie' section, and there's nothing. Just the same stupid horror films and comedies coming out of the major studios, and the same stupid cliche "I really want an Oscar! Please, please, please, please, please? I'll do anything! Anything! Please?" movies coming out the major studios' smaller divisions.
Oh, wait, here's the annual "OMFG IT HAS AN NC-17, AND IT ISN'T A PORNO, SO IT MUST BE ART!" movie. I thought that was the new one from the guy who did "24 hour party people"? Maybe they decided that one really was porn? It sure looked like it! I didn't see it because I think the bands were awful, and the porn, well, is porn. I can get massive quantities of it over the internet for free. Who needs movies? Fuck it.
I liked "The Brown Bunny" though, so, maybe
I hope we get 3 Extremes here in Tampa. We probably won't, but it looks like an awesome movie. It's the only movie this year I've been really excited about, although I had some enthusiasm for a few others (especially the 2 big stop motion films, you know the ones). -

In school when i was 10 we was forced to read 'Narnia'. Its the biggest pile of rip-off shit i've ever read. Its just toally 'twee', like it was written by a four-year old on steroids.
Harry Potter 4 looks good, but nothing can compare to KingKong, jeez that looks awesome.

I agree, King Kong is in a whole different realm than HP/Narnia..
Narnia looks super cheesy in some parts, while Harry Potter looks pretty good all around! -

reallly? You must have had quite a bit of literary knowledge for a 10 year old to know that narnia series borrows heavily...
Speaking of which, care to name those heavily borrowed from sources? I must not be getting it... I always thought of narnia as greatly imaginitive childrens stories.
that being said, HP is going to kick narnian ass... because narnia movie looks pretty fucking cheesy right now. And I haven't really been paying attention to the score, but the HP trailer music didn't strike me as "cheesy". -

About King Kong - yes it looks great, but I get so pissed off when trailers show so much of the film! I wish they hadn't actually shown him in full, I wish they hadn't shown so many different scenes...I yearn for trailers that don't give away the most exciting bits. -

cg? gets it. All Narnia looks like is a rip off Lord of the Rings.
Personally, I'm waiting for Charlie to come out tomorrow. Then I'll be all set. -

Funny you should say that, i remember hearing somewhere the author of Narnia (C. S. Lewis) was a good friend of J.R.R. Tolkien at Oxford Uninversity, the two books were supposed to be written parallel to each other- Lord Ot The Rings being by far the biggest success out the two though.
However this could just be some sort of 'urban legend'. Whatever it is, Narnia books are a complete rip-off of LOTR.

I always thought the Narnia books were pretty interesting. I don't know if I'll go and see the movie, though. -

C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and... some other author were all good friends, and discussed/reviewed each of their novels. They met in the top room of some restuarant weekly to compare stories, offer criticisms, etc. Both men were affected by WW I (or was it II?), and this can be seen in each of their novels.
I watched a History Channel program on it all when Lord of the Rings was still being released. Don't remember much besides the above, unfortunately. -

Hey you cocksuckers, is there some rule against seeing and enjoying all three because that's what the fuck I'm going to do
Jesus, everything's a competition. C.S. Lewis is J.K. Rowling's favorite author and idol, and King Kong is Peter Jackson and has nothing to do with either. Plus, Narnia looks like LotR because WETA is behind all the artwork!!
so holy shit stop comparing them all, and ps unless jackson's reputation gets him rocketlaunched into contention none of them are going to win the Oscar, so I guess you can all go see all of them. -

I think the other guy may have been Arthur C. Clarke. My favorite author.
They used to have lots of discussions about technology and religion and such, sometimes also with Asimov involved, I believe, and as you can imagine, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were usually on one side of the discussion, with A.C. Clarke and Asimov on the other. I'd been wanting to pick up the book From Narnia to a Space Odyssey: The War of Letters Between Arthur C. Clarke and C.S. Lewis for a while, but it's gotten some mediocre/bad reviews from people I respect, so I may not. I'll see if I can find out some more info on the whole thing later, but I need to go to a screening in a second.
Actually, it all works out fairly well, as those four (except maybe Tolkien, as I still haven't read much of his work), along with Lovecraft (who also corresponded with Clarke a bit, I believe), are my favorite authors.
EDIT: I spelled Tolkien wrong.Edited by Xcoaster, 07 November 2005 - 09:54 PM.

strange, they all tend to be some of my favorites as well...
Though I prefer the rest of them over tolkien, because I find his writing style a bit dull and slow paced.
Some of the underlying themes, literary devices, and tones in the writings of tolkien and lewis are similar. Given that they were of the same time, and even knew eachother, their stories are still completely different.
