General Chat / Jarhead

I just saw this movie. I really don't know what to think. It was too stinted, really. Too many blocks and not enough flow. The cinimatography was mind blowing, I've only see film done better once.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'm interested.

    It's worth it then?

I am curious to know what that would be.

    How is Jarhead cut?

That can be taken two ways. :p
Hero is the only movie which has surpassed this in visual beauty.

K.....I meant....how is it edited? Is it a lot of jump cuts, or is it more of a fluid stream of thought type of film?

Interesting choice for your "Best Film" pick.
Personally, my favorite film, from an editing standpoint, is probably Addams Family Values.....now before you say "What the fuck?" let me explain......Barry Sonnenfeld has a very "in your face" type of directing style that translates really well to celluloid medium.....it's perhaps the most "immediate" style editing that I've been witness to....and the style has been copied add on infinitum...from Fight Club, to Black Hawk Down.....the "immediacy" is there, in all its' "warts and all" glory.

P.S. I am aware that Sonnenfeld did not cut AFV......but his vision helped "prompt" the cutter.

    Let the flaming begin.

Sorry, there were a lot of nude scenes so I didn't know what you meant.
Jarhead was cut in a way to make it obvious that each story was like an episode, for me, it really broke up the fi;m.

I thought this movie was amazing, just saw it tonight.

The ending is so perfect, and the entire movie was not what I was expecting AT ALL.

Well there you go. Christopher Doyle. He's without a doubt one of the top 5 DPs working today. You should really see Fallen Angels if you haven't already. That's another movie Christopher Doyle shot (directed by Wong Kar Wai) and I think it might be the most beautiful looking movie I've ever seen.

Oh and Roger Deakins is another guy who is undoubtedly in the top 5 and he shot Jarhead. Look him up on IMDB. He's done a lot of fantastic work. He shoots all the Cohen Bros. movies for one thing, but he does other stuff too.

I just saw this. Beautiful photography in parts, and effective in others (when it's not supposed to be beautiful). The movie I liked, but was also a little disappointed in. There were some interesting revelations in there about the characters, but it doesn't really go any place unexpected. The trailer makes it look a little better than it is. But it's still pretty good. I always like Sarsgaard.

I didn't like the structure of the movie as I said earlier. I believe it really weakened everything else it had going for it. I was never really attached to the characters, I didn't care that Swoff's girlfriend cheated on him, I didn't really give a fuck that the creep was going to be discharged when he got back.

Still, I'm not complaining, nor am I mad that I spent my money on that. The actors did a good job, the characterization just wasn't convincing enough for me. With that and the editing it mananged to bring the move down for me.

Ed, I'll have to look into Fallen Angels, if the cinematography is anything like Jarhead it will be a joy to watch.

Edit: fuck, I don't know what I just said. I cannot make up my mind about this movie.

I dunno, but the scene where Swoff's partner finally earns his brand is so amazingly done. I got shivers down my back while watching that scene.

I found it to be intense and darkly humorous (very funny actually, which I didn't expect). The acting is phenomenal (especially Gyllenhaal and Foxx), the cinematography is breathtaking, and there are some great scenes (the horse in the oil field, Troy's branding, Troy's breakdown, the vietnam vet come to mind initially), but it never becomes a tangible whole as a film. As a result, it often tends to just plod along to absolutely no climax. It might be a good book (dunno, never read it), but I don't think the story worked as well as a movie.

Still, definitely worth watching, it seems alot of the critics problems stem from the fact that they don't find it to be political enough.

Robin Williams Live on Broadway is one of the best comedy DVDs ever.

pssh, that was good, indeed, but it had NOTHING on his performance at the roxbury YEARS ago! Trust me, robin williams is WAY funnier than many people give him credit, cuz they just don't know his good stuff.
