Here are my favourite 10 examples of cover art from the albums that I own:
10. Statues by Moloko
Oh Roisin Murphy how we love you. Absolute genius lol - I can just imagine the shoot for this one, wading around in water and looking mental. The hair is especially wild. Also this is so different from the very clipped, businesswoman-like Murphy from earlier albums, which is a bit strange because this album was their least left-field yet. Still, great cover.
9. Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol
Really understated. I don't know how but this sums up the album entirely...atmospheric lighting, slightly seedy...it somehow whispers 'obsessive/dark/elegant'. It's covers that reflect what's inside that I like a lot, but they have to look good too. And this one really looks good.
8. Fever [Special Edition] by Kylie
Even better than the original artwork, this is actually on a cardboard cover OVER the original. I like the mic lead on the original, but this version is cooler cos it's all in relief compared to the whiteness of the cover...but really it's the combined effect which makes it extra cool. Funny how short she is, though.
7. Post by Bjork
Awesome image with a real vibrant change from Debut. There's lots of different pictures with similar backgrounds of Bjork in different poses. I really like the movement and the little bits in her hair.
6. The Love Below by Outkast
I only really mean the Andre3000 side because that's the better side, but I suppose together they are still pretty cool. I just think that the smoking gun image is brilliant for some reason.
5. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips
I bought this album on the strength of its artwork alone. I'm glad I did, because it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. The font is awesome (lovely website with it) but my favourite part is little Yoshimi standing defiant in the corner, her shadow looking equally small compared to the scary robot. The other artwork accompanying this album's release is also fantastic.
4. Blueberry Boat by The Fiery Furnaces
For something so simple, this is quite astonishingly beautiful. It's so calming, but at the same time makes you think of the sort of sea shanties running through the album. I like abstract art like this because it's soothing and not too challenging. Also the font is absolutely perfect and the inside of the booklet somehow manages to make their lyrics appear less challenging than they are (although they still read like a James Joyce novel...) This CD is a lovely one to have on a CD rack cos it's so pretty to look at.
3. Richard D. James Album by Aphex Twin
Oh God scary Richard. This is such a cool album cover because the music makes you think of some weird psycho guy...and there he is! Also, the booklet art is little bits of his face duplicated over and over - I think one bit is from his nose, another from just underneath one of his eyes...it's kind of gross but in a cool way. And that cover never fails to scare people. If I owned Windowlicker, that would be up here too, but I don't.
2. Chutes Too Narrow by The Shins
I love this because it's so whimsical, like the music inside. Also, it comprises several of the pages of the booklet, all folded over to create a 3D effect. It's kind of paradoxical/fantastic, which I like to think mirrors the weird imagery of the lyrics (mostly impenetrable for me). I really like the little eye peeping up, because I have that on a t-shirt too.
1. Homogenic by Bjork
I chose this as my favourite not only for the cover, as it also has one of the best designed booklets i've seen. The images by MeCompany are just brilliant, evoking the dark (but warm) themes of the album. The outfit Bjork is wearing on the cover, designed by Alexander McQueen, is incredible - like an assimilation of several different cultures all into one (part geisha, part tribeswoman, part nordic god). Really, this is the most powerful and memorable album cover of those that I own.
So there you go. -
