    M.I.A. kicks your ass, cg?.
  • killing_moon%s's Photo

No one rips anyone off. It's more whoever gets big first is the one who usually is "original" even if other bands formed before them. This was stated before.

That's bollocks as well though. Pop is constantly ripping chord progressions off songs already written.

Fine, if Keane were around before Travis, Coldplay or even Starsailor then woopdifuckingdoo. Did they get signed before these guys? Keane may have been making music before these guys but was it in the same vein as the stuff they excrete now? Tell me.

Secondly, "Untitled 1" is one song. That hardly emotes differentiation does it? Particuarly if the rest of the album conforms.

Thirdly, your point about Bedshaped's lyrics, that one line could be about bloody anything, white light? Is that the white lights of a dinner hall or maybe or an interrogation room? I dunno, its so fucking vague. How the hell is anyone meant to know about the guys parents if they've just brought the record, hours of investigation shouldn't have to be poured into the album just to decifer it (which is one of my main beefs with TMV) and then render some sort of emotional response. Somwhere Only We Know tries so hard to pull at the heart-strings and falls so hard in doing so, sure everyone could identify if the lyrics weren't as vague as the rest of the album.

Fourthly. You used the word "superficial emotion" and that's what Keane basically are, they may have true feelings about love but its really hard to believe when listening to them.

Killing Moon, if your in to hollow, over-polished, over-produced, blustery and banal radio singles then fine. As Public Enemy famously said "Don't Believe The Hype" and trust me, its not that hard to do.

Ed, I admire your honesty and your parkmaking. But please leave out.

    But please leave out.

Take your own advise me thinks :)

IMO keane are one of the best new bands of the past year. Their music is full of emotion and can carry the listener throughout the entire album.
Sure coldplay have been there before but they never did it so well and there is a difference.
To me every rap artist sounds the same. Just a beat and some guy over the top. but whatever floats peoples boats...

Ed has a point. i dontm necisserilly (sp?) agree with him on everything but hes just expressing an opinion. as are we all.

I can't even listen to it all the way through without falling asleep. One of the most boring CDs of '04.

The white light lyric is a reference to ascension at death, presumably you don't have the pathetically small amount of intelligence required to work that out. I can guarantee Keane wrote the majority of that album more than 5 years ago. I know, you see, because I saw them before they were signed to a record label. So, I'm TELLING YOU it is in the exact same vein as they are continuing to produce.

Your problem with Keane is that you've formed an unfounded opinion without listening to enough of their music or getting any sort of factual basis on which to form your views. And thus they suck. So perhaps listen to the album and then come back and give your opinion.

You say the lyrics to somewhere only we know are vague. Let me print them here right in front of your face:

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

How the flying fuck (if you'll excuse my french) can you describe that as vague?

This music is anything but hollow. To you it may be because you don't understand it but to me it's far more meaningful than anything else I heard last year. And, tbh, that's all that matters.

You tell me not to believe the hype - well, I loved this band before there was any hype. More Stargazer bollocks - shut the door on your way out.

    question.

If Somewhere Only We Know puts me to sleep, why would I bother listening to the rest of the album?

    question.

You wouldn't, but my point is that you shoudn't hate a band until you've listened to the majority of what they've got to offer! Linking it to Ed's theories, it's like saying, "Saddam Hussein is a wanker and I hate him, therefore I hate all iraqis".

I've got the album but thats not the point.

Its obvious we've got different opinions on Keane so we'll just leave it at that. I don't want this to esculate beyond no return.

I'm very picky with lyrics and thats just me.

    :D

    Razorlight are shit though.

Dave Mathews band because they make me want to seal my ears up with hot wax...

Take a walk. Learn what real music is. You obviously have no idea how talented they are. They have arguably the best drummer in the world, a great violinist, a great saxophonist, and most of all, a unique singer.
  • Stargazer%s's Photo
I don't know Dave Matthews Band but I know that alot of talented musicans doesn't make a good band.

Hell, look at Dream Theater and Rush.

In other words, I've outbantered you on Keane so let's move onto Razorlight?

Johnny Borrell has been playing gigs in London since the age of 11. You need incredible talent to be able to do that. Actually, on second thoughts, don't tell me why you think they are "shit", it will just make me sick.

You're forgetting the good musicians that do make a good band. Cream, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Red Hot Chili Peppers are to name but a few. There are far more good ones than there are bad ones. Your opinion is also unjustified because it's clear you've never listened to them...
  • mantis%s's Photo
I think he was just taking issue with the reasoning. Fair point.

I like listening to the Keane album once in a while but it's not something i'd listen to a lot - it doesn't click with me emotionally as much as some other albums do, and it's definitely not as intriguing as some.

I'm not a big fan of things like DJ Sammy or LMC vs U2. Especially when they have scary man-women in their videos (is it a man? is it a woman? what's with the frog-like eyes? argh!)
  • Stargazer%s's Photo
Johnny Borrell maybe extremely talented. But if he's so talented then why blatantly rip Television and The Strokes? Seems kinda silly. Particuarly if he's a "better lyricist that Bob Dylan" (his words).

Haze, I know alot of talented musicans can make a good band and you showed some fine examples. However, having good musicians does not necessary mean the music is good. Thats just my point.

Killing Moon, it was more the fact that I didn't want to banter on because you just kept re-enforcing my points with your replys. However I admit that I didn't know that Keane were around before Coldplay + Starsailor, so thanks for that.
