The Village had nice visuals but the story was pathetic.

1.Fight Club - Tyler Durden is the best movie character of all time.

    And the hottest.
  • Valp%s's Photo
Oh, I loved The Village... from one stupid twist to the next. I... just really, really enjoyed everything about it except the ending.

On another related note... gee, I figured Bryce Dallas Howard might have been getting more attention in the award races. Hm...

And everyone needs to see Phantom of the Opera. Man, I love it!

^ Great concept. Great directing. Great theme. Great script. Great acting. Great score.

I will give the acting a plus, but other than that...blah. The concept was good, just not executed well. Visuals. The monster. A porcupine? :|

    The monster. A porcupine?

But if you're only using it as (I saw) a metaphor for evil for your children, it could have been a giant yellow sponge and it would still be effective for the needs of that town... and scare the crap out of those poor ignorant children.

Far better than I expected it to be. Somehow it just wan't satisfying having them all get killed at the end. Oh well it was a good movie anyway.

+Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade-  Harrison Ford's greatest part.  He makes the perfect 30 year old teenager.

Are you talking about River Phoenix's "Young Indiana" character?

I don't like movies anymore. At this moment, I don't want art to serve as an escape from my life, or a reflection on my life, but, rather, as a part of my life. Placing design above art; abstraction over representation; etc. I want a film to exist purely as beautiful images, recorded on to film, edited in a stimulating manner, and then synchronized with beautiful sound. Sound, and vision, and nothing else.

Of course, there are films like this, but I don't have much access to them in Tampa. However, one I have found, and love, is here (just to serve as an example):

    Hmm... This is hard.
In no order, and most probably forgetting most of my favourites:

    Fight Club
    Apocalypse Now: Redux
    The Matrix
    Scarface
    Pulp Fiction
    Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
    Being John Malkovich
    Life Of Brian
    Run Lola Run

Can't come up with a ninth one, maybe Edward Scissorhands or something.

There are so many movies I want to see, and so little time.

All I can think of off the top of my head, though it IS more than 10... I can't decide either way which would be the "10".

Hero is my favorite movie of all time...

it's so great that I can't think of any 9 to go behind it.
  • natelox%s's Photo
Speaking of Hero, and given cg's comment, I think he should see it. It felt more like moving art than a movie. For the record, I thought it was beautiful to watch, but it faultered as a movie; hence I wasn't overly impressed.

Well, I don't really have a top 10 but since I've already wrote a Disney one on another board I might as well share it with NE:

    1. The Little Mermaid - An inspiring movie. The one that officialy started the Disney era. Great music, quality animation and a strong story. This remains my all time favorite.

    2. Aladdin - Taking a close second this one also has a lot to offer. One of Disney's few non-European tales, this one is sure to take a place in the minds of the public. Great songs and memorable characters make this one a classic.

    3. Beauty and the Beast - Known as the most romantic love story to ever hit theatres. This masterpiece was the first (and only) animated feature to be nominated for 'Best Film' in the Oscars. With classic tunes this one is a sure winner!

    4. The Lion King - This is Disney's most profitable traditional animation feature and for good reason. Adorable characters, catchy rythms and a fresh storyline makes this one of Disney's strongest classics. With two sequels and enough merchandise to fill the Haunted Mansion this one is sure to stick around for a few more years.

    5. Mulan - A truely under-rated Disney movie. This is the last animated classic to showcase storytelling through music. With a deep and interesting storyline taking on many issues such as a woman's status in society and bringing honor to the family this one is sure to interest both young and old alike.

    6. Brother Bear - In my book, Disney's last 'true' classic. With a storyline like no other this one is a hidden jewel that unfortunately not many have experienced. It's not the funny characters or the cheerful music that make this feature strong, it's the depth of the storyline that keeps you interested. To some this was boring, to me this is a masterpiece. Everything about it just seems to be so unique. With a strong storyline and groundbreaking animation this one is a sure classic in my opinion.

    7. The Hunchback of Notredam - To some this seems to be too dumbed down for adults, and too much for the kids to handle. To me this is a work of art. There's just something about this movie that makes me think about the way we as a society treat others sometimes. Some great songs are featured but might disappoint some. This isn't the ordinary pop singing, light-hearted movie. Some will see this as a negative, to me this only makes it more unique.

    8. Hercules - Disney's return to easy going stories began with Hercules. With animation that's simple yet effective and loveable characters (and a cool villian!!) this one is sure to be popular with the whole family.

    9. Lilo and Stitch - A wonderful treat at a time Disney just can't seem to pull off a decent story. Taking on important issues such as family yet remaining fun and easy going it's no surprise this one succeeded beyond Disney's expectations.

    10. Sleeping Beauty - One of Walt's last features. This one has it all! A truely evil villian, a romantic story and a dragon! What more could you want?! Even though the animation has become outdated it still holds a strong story, familiar with everyone around the world. This one is sure to live up to it's famous title!

1)Memento - imo the best movie ever made. the idea of going backwards is pure genious and it was pulled off just amazingly.

2)A Clockwork Orange - the longer you go after seeing it, the better it gets. alex delarge is the coolest guy ever.

3)Lord of the Rings: Return Of The King - this just has so much to it, it makes #3 on my list. mainly the battle scene and the scene when aragorn gets crowned make it so good.

4)The Rock - ahh the good old action movies of the 90's, too bad they dont make any more pure action movies like this anymore.

5)Spider-Man - to disagree with most other people, i dont think the sequel matched up to this masterpiece of a movie. unlike the sequel which i thought there was too much storyline and not enough action, i thought this had the perfect mix of the two.

6)Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - the most fun movie i have ever seen. brought up from being a great movie to an amazing movie by the performance of johnny depp.

7)Back To The Future Part 2 - how can you not love the BTTF movies? i like this one better than the first because i liked the storyline in this one better and it had more of a time travel theme to it (if thats possible)

8)Identity - this is more than a cliched teen slasher flick. its an awesome psychological thriller with some awesome twists.

9)The Truman Show - easily jim carrey's best movie, this is just an overall great movie.

10)Fight Club - great twist and i love tyler's veiw on humans and society.

you just made half the animators of the world cry in pain.

    seriously.

brother bear had some very subtle animation, especially in the part where he is skipping around and taunting. Notice how the action moves between the two in sections, emphasizing the focus of the character who is most important at the moment. A beautiful scene. Unfortunately, the story was poorly done (despite what you might think).... The beats were solid, but it had an overbearing foundation despite itself. The storyboarding was actually not that great (which only makes the animation seem even more godly, but still...), and the backdrops, though defaulted unimaginative due to setting, still managed to be out of sync with the context of the movie.

little mermaid did not start the age of animation for disney, it started the popularity of disney animation and made it become mainstream. Lion King actually did more on that front, and was a better movie overall as well. The 2 guys who did all the middle disney material (JB, rescuers, etc.) I think had much more insight and control over their craft than the current disney key animators did up until mulan. They pioneered a lot of subtle character interaction and animated emotionally complicated scenes that just floored a lot of the early mainstream disney like BatB, Aladdin, etc.

Only that Key animator from mulan (who also designed the look of mulan and BB) is on par with the 2 key animators from back then. I'm much more impressed by middle disney features like RH/101D and some of the older disney things like Fantasia/Sleeping Beauty. Fantasia in particular, which as a concept is VERY imaginative and was a brave effort for back then (now that I think about it, it would still be brave even attempted now). Only HBoND had as good of backgrounds and concept art as fantasia did. Fantasia also was a pioneer of many things that are now convention (...plus, I give it props for making ballerina hippoes look so graceful, and for orchestrating bare mountain, which was genius in it's construction). As for story, Lion King was good, and was cast pretty well to boot, a nice piece of film. The rest were either badly interpreted aesop fables or badly constructed kiddie fodder with one melodramatic theme barely tying it together. A lot of the early mainstream stuff (aside from lion king) had really bad scripting too. The ENTIRE scene in BatB where beast and belle fall in love is summed up in the script as "beast and bell fall in love". Made the guy who had to storyboard it very fucking pissed

My opinion on disney as a whole is that it talks down to it's audience, and that's a big mistake even in animation(actually, MOST american animation talks down to it's audience, but that's neither here nor there). Disney does it constantly though, so that is why my respect for them is fractured at best. Pixar lately has been leaps and bounds better than disney, and manages to have engaging stories that respect it's audience, and a soundtrack that can keep up with disney while fitting the moment (just as well, I prefer pixar's pacing MUCH more than disney's - both animation wise and beat wise).

Heh, Did you know the guy who pitched finding nemo had to do so WITHOUT ANY FRICKIN ARTWORK OR STORYBOARDS?!

Fucking props for that crazy bastard, I would have had a panic attack, but he pitched the entire thing with only a script in his hands. Takes fucking balls to do that...

if we're talking disney, lion king is just by far the best disney movie. I used to love aladdin as a kid but lion king has more depth and the greatest elton john songs ever.

As to movies i personally like to see, they're usually teen movies with as little content as possible, laughs, and hot chicks. They aren't good but they're the most enjoyable for me to watch. I'm talking American Pie, Freddy got Fingered, Van Wilder, Eurotrip, Road Trip, Cruel Intentions... and even though some are good, most really aren't.

    In no particular order, .....

    Shawshank Redemption
    Pulp Fiction
    A Clockwork Orange
    The Usual Suspects
    Seven

probably more but atleast these were the ones i'd rank really really high. Pulp Fiction, i only saw it once as of yet, but it's a movie that you want to see again straight after it ends, and it's actually really clever in a lot of ways. A Clockwork Orange is probably one of the best movies of all time. It's incredibly shocking, possibly even dare i say realistic, and just very very moving. It's the most timeless movie out there, too, probably. I'd say in another 20 years this movie would still be very watchable and a debated best movie.
