Okay so I know we've had topics about poker before but I used to not play poker. Then on Thanksgiving my family got me into Texas Hold Em. So now I'm addicted to Partypoker (with "play money" of course). Anyone else play on PartyPoker? Anyone want to have a game sometime? My username on there is knowyronion.

Haha, my family also taught me how to play silly card games. Such as spades, rummy, and even Texas hold 'em. Unfortunately though, I don't keep up with online games, therefor I don't know what PartyPoker is.

Hello.

I am a frequenter of the 3/6 and 5/10 tables myself.

I also play in the 20/2 and 50/5 multi-table tournaments. The prize structure past 60th place is insane. I have yet to not finish out of the money in those BtW.

I currently have no funds though....cashed out to pay some bills.
:(

Hey lets talk about neat hands..

I have not played that long so I have not seen a Royal yet, but one shright flush by the guy sitting next to me in a 2-4 live game. The other day my Dad (I play with him alot) stayed in a hand with AQ off suit, and the flop came AAA giveing him 4 ace' on the fuckin flop! :X

I think my best hand was with Poket Kings at Party Poker, I got the third on the flop, and forth on the river. Also at Party Poker I had a sright flush draw on the turn, but the betting was really crazy and I was on a one card draw, so I folded, and yup the card came out....

How about you guys?
• gymkid dude%s's Photo
i had a royal flush...the other guy had the 9 to give him a 9-k straight flush.
• marinersfan59%s's Photo
In real (sit down, not online) poker with some friends, I got there for a cash game late. I folded the first hand. On the second, I hit 4 jacks. On the third, I hit 4 8's. Two quads in a row!!!!! I figured out the odds of that happening the next day, and I think it was 1 in 1.3million.

And as for online poker, I'd suggest using PokerStars over any program on the internet. I've played at over 10 different locations, and PokerStars is the most reliable, secure (for real $), and flexible program that there is. The program is excellent, and they have a lot of people playing on it. The servers can actually handle the massive customers (which is rare these days), so games stay fast. It has everything that other places have (with the exception of odd games) and more. The next best is UltimateBet, and then PartyPoker.

My Memoir On Gambling

I started gambling at the age of 17, when my dad entered my college footballpicks into a $200 buy-in pool on the 2000 College Bowl games. To win the pool, Iwould need to pick more of the 25 games correctly than 35 other people. In the beginning, I lost three of the first fourgames; however, my next six consecutive picks won, tying me for the lead. Next,I lost a few more and fell out of the lead. I was in about tenth place with seven games to go. The only way I could win was to win all seven games, and I did.

I was surprised when I won, mainly because I won $5,000, and that's a lot of money for a 17 year oldto have. But, I was smart and put almostall of it into my savings account. I had decided before I won that, if I won, Iwould have some fun with the prize money; I even jokingly told my sister Iwould give her $300 if I did win. (I did give the $300 to her when I won and $500to my dad.) What I did for fun was buy some video games and an official leatherNBA Game Basketball. So that's really how my first experience withgambling went. It was easy and I won a load of cash; but, is that what happensevery time someone gambles? I think gambling is really not that bad; howeveryou need to be smart, because you can lose your money gambling.

After that huge win, I entered the same pool a year later, but with two entrees; one was my own and the other one Ishared with my mom, dad, grandmother, and sister. My own picks did poorly, butmy other picks managed to come in third and won $800. After splitting that fiveways, I was about even. I entered again the following year and did not win anymoney. That was my last entry in the College Bowl gambling pool.

Fast forward to 2004, when I startedwatching the World Series of Poker on ESPN. They really made it look easy. I asked my dad to teach me how to play Texas Hold'em, as he plays it a lothimself. My dad has played poker his whole life; he loves the game and theaction, but I have always wondered if he was compulsive or addicted. It worriedme that if I started to play I could become compulsive or addicted too.Regardless of the risks in my mind, I decided to give it a try. I guess I amjust lucky, but my first night I won $90.

The trick is you can't lose money ifyou don't put a lot in and it only costs $20 to play in a game. You can get tenhands for $3 in the game I would play. What I did was wait for reallygood cards like aces, kings, and queens, and I think that was why I did sowell. On that first night, I was not just playing cards, I was trying to get afeel of a real game where there are nine other players and blinds are used. (Ablind forces a player to bet before the community cards are dealt.) I think Iwon three hands that night, about $30 each hand.

My dad and I play at the Flagler dog trackin Miami near the Miami Airport. It is a decent place that draws in a unique crowd of poker players. I would saythat most of the players there are older Hispanics, forty to eighty years old;some are good players, and others are bad. Good players do not bluff much. They wait until they have something good beforethey put in any cash and sometimes other players will fold their hands to agood player.

There are some bad players at Flagler and they can mess up a good game. These players will raise with weakcards. What is worst of all is when theywin doing that, because then they are likely to keep trying and raising the potto levels that are hard to afford. Bad players are almost always the compulsiveplayers; they blow entire bank rolls at the table and really look like fools. When I did start to go with my dad, I was happy to see he did not play likethis, but he did seem to get that way a little if he could not win one hand fora long time. I also had that happened once and lost $60 which still stands asthe most I have ever lost at one time.
Having a bad run is called "goingon tilt." The worst way it can happen is if you get a pretty good hand thatcan be beat by only a few cards and someone gets one of those cards and doesbeat you. This is known as a "bad beat" or a "second best hand."Even if a good player has this happen; they can go on tilt and lose a lot ofmoney. There really is no way to avoid a bad beat or a second best hand unlessyou can "read" the other player. To read another player is to be ableto figure out what type of a hand the player has. You can do this by seeing howmuch the player bets, noticing what on the board may help them and hurt you, andby the way the player is acting. You must factor all these things and you canalso read a player to let yourself know how to play him.

Soon after I started playing in the cashgames at Flagler, they started holding tournaments three times a week. To entera tournament was $45 and if you won you would get $1,200. However, the catch isyou need to beat 99 other players. My dad and I entered the first tournamentthey held and we both lost without winning a single hand. After that I entered threemore and I still had no luck at all. I had played in four of these things andcould not even win a hand. It was so badI was ashamed of myself.

On my fifth tournament I did win onehand, but only by bluffing; until then I had been getting very bad beats tolose hands and was eliminated. I think, in all, I entered seven tournaments andI only won two hands; however, I really should not have gone back after thefirst few. It was my pride that made me keep entering until I won a hand. Ifelt I had to prove something to myself and that is not a very smart mindset. Also, my dad came in fifth place one time, making it to the "final table,"the place every tournament player wants to go, and I think I wanted that feelingtoo.

I think the people that get to have themost fun playing poker at a casino are the dealers. The dealers get to watchall the action and never lose a penny! They also get to make rulings and warnplayers who break rules, like looking at other players’ cards when both playersare in play. For this paper, I thought it would be fitting to talk to a dealer.

I Interviewed Philip"Phil" Rubin, a 65 year old dealer who works at the Flagler Dog Track. At the track, he is known as one of the dealers who is most experienced atpoker; he even played with Stu Unger, one of the best all-time poker playerswho won the World Series of Poker three times, a record that still standstoday. (The World Series of Poker is the biggest poker tournament there is.Winners get well over a million dollars.)

My Interview with Phil Rubin
Darren - How long have you been in this profession and where did you start?
Phil - 18 years. I started in AtlanticCity at the Resorts International.

Darren - Do you think a lot of gamblers are compulsive?
Phil – Yes, most are compulsive, thought they may deny it.

Darren - Have you ever seen a player on full tilt or lose a lot of money? Whatdo you think of players that tend to go on tilt?
Phil - They are the extreme compulsive gamblers that play down to their lastpenny and they may turn violent.

Darren - When a player gets a bad beat or busted out, I have seen them getpretty mad. What are some of the most interesting reactions you have seen?
Phil - Fist fights, card throwing, chair throwing.

Darren - What are some of the most interesting hands you have dealt?
Phil - Last week a heart royal flush.

I was surprised by what I heard from Philabout compulsive gambling. I really did not think it was a huge problem, however it is. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Approximately 85 percent ofAmerican adults report having gambled at some point in their lives, and about60 percent say they've gambled at least once in the past year." Fromreading this article, I also found some surprising statistics, like that,"an estimated two million American adults become compulsive gamblers atsome point in their lifetimes." I realize that gambling is not somethingto take lightly. It can become a problem if someone uses poor judgment and letshimself become compulsive; however, I do think people can play for fun, or evenfor money, without being compulsive. You just need to be smart.

Being smart at poker is a necessity. Youmust know how to raise, read players, check, bet, and even bluff. Most players, like my dad, look to books for advice. I remember before every tournament Iplayed he would rattle off tips and quotes to me, like they were top secret, need to know, "hush hush" information, and I did listen. But, nomatter what you read, I don't think it’s much good, as no two poker situationsare alike. The basic advice on poker that I hear over and over is,"Hold'em is for high hands only. The standard high hand <istyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>always wins." (emphasis added) I read that in a poker book called "KenWarren Teaches Texas Hold'em," by Ken Warren (who ironically looks justlike my dad without glasses). Almost every poker book will tell you that highcards win, and they are right, they do win most of the time, but not <istyle='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>always.
For the most part, I play by the rules. It’s rareI play poor hands, but, yes, I have in the past, mostly on a hunch. As of now, I have played for about 4 months and have yet tolose any money playing poker. In fact, I have won about $400 and enjoy playingpoker. In gambling, overall, I have wonabout $5,500. I think I will not need to worry about becoming compulsive oraddicted though, since I don't really even play too much, maybe once aweek or less.

I had worried about my dad a bit before, but then, after playing with him, Ireally think his only trouble is lack of patience and stubbornness, which Ihave also faced playing poker. If I play for about an hour and can't win a hand,I am likely to nearly empty my wallet trying to win a hand. I need to work onthat, because it will not do me any good.

Overall, I think gambling really is notthat bad; however you really need to be smart because you are using your moneyon it and that itself is what makes gambling such a risk. A lot of people willhear statistics like the ones I listed above and assume gambling is a waste ofmoney and that only compulsive, ignorant people gamble. They are entitled tohave their own opinion, but I think the truth is that it all depends on playingor betting smart. You can use your head and do well if you know what you are doing. Life itself can be looked at as a deck of poker cards. You get dealt ahand that might be good, bad, or just okay, then you need to do the best youcan with it, and, if you do well, hopefully you will rake in a big pot.

Ok let's get a game going. I guess Empire Poker/Party Poker is going to be the obvious venue, I'll look into setting up a private table/tournament of some type. If not I know you can do it on William Hill so we could always use that, it doesn't really matter where you play if it's a play money game anyway. So the other thing we need to sort is the time. For the next month, any time of the 24 hour clock is fine by me. So yeh, post if your interested and we'll sort out a date. How does next weekend sound?

i go all in on a5 suited trying to bluff the guy out. He calls, we flip, and hes got rockets...im thinking shit....i pull my 3 on the river and end up making a straight to take him out of the game. I do it to him again later with rockets..pull another of the flop. ended up taking 36 on the hand.
