I never really appreciated this area 'as a kid', mostly because the coaster is a bit undercooked, but the area has grown on me a lot. It's so textured. Possibly first use of 3d signs for a non-western script too? Not sure here, but earliest example I can think of.
I think given what he tried to achieve it's quite well done. This is a super difficult theme for the time it was built. I also don't love the layout. It's more the fact that he managed to get jholland to do one for him that was amazing then.
To be honest, this is probably my favourite area of RoB. Lemuria has that timeless beauty, but there's a complexity and roughness to this area that I find way more appealing to me.

this was my easy favorite area back in the day, hard to deny the setpiece of a flying coaster built into a cliffside
