I don't know... this one is just not working for me. The earlier screen gave off this amazing, nepalese/jungle ruins theme. This one seems architecturally confused (is it european? south american?) and too clean and orderly for an ancient temple. While I'm huge on colors, I'm not sure the domes are doing you any good, as they don't really strike me as temple (especially the concave one).

I would have thought more of a ruined angkor watt or maybe some sort of expedition-everest type vibe would really suit it better. Also, do something more interesting than massive flat rooves! (especially the brown one?)

What makes the domes work so well on seb's recent screen that I'm missing? And what exactly gives off the "architectural confusion"? I don't really understand where the conflict is coming from.

In the previous screen you had a really dark atmosphere going on... This screen is completely different, it's light-hearted. The best piece of architecture here is, coincidentally, the entrance which doesn't have any colour other than brown. I think you should just stick to brown. The spires don't seem to fit the theme anyway.

Is it a hidden temple or a lively market square?

I actually like this screen better than the other one.

A temple is a perfect instance of where symmetry and monochromaticity actually make a lot of sense

the domes just don't fit in with the architectural style of the rest of it, making it seem disjointed and weird. its not a matter of comparing your work to someone else's and asking 'why did mine not work when theirs did?'

You have to evaluate your own work within the context of itself, not others

I'm not comparing mine to his. I was pointing out that both of ours were roughly similar in theme, and the domes worked in his, but apparently don't in mine, and I was wondering why that was. I noticed that he pulled it off well and wanted to know how I could change mine do the same.

What you need to do to pull the theme off well is to assess the distinct features of the theme you're pursuing and execute these features well. For more theme clarity you can exaggerate these features, but that's at the risk of making the area cartoony and fake. Very appropriate for Disney parks.

If you did a better theme assessment you would've noticed the difference between Seb's screen (Arabian-urban) and your apparant aim (rainforest-ruins).

As I more or less implied with my previous comment, your screen has too many features that distract from the temple theme, and too few features that indicate a temple.

It's not really supposed to be a "hidden temple" or "secret ruin" as you seem to be implying. It's connected to a nearby waterfront village (which will also be included on the map) and frequented by members of the village. I imagine members of the community, including but not limited to the clergy, living within/around the temple, and a market environment existing there because of that. It was supposed to be lively, because livelier, more colorful environments tend to look better in this game, and because it helps explain why guests would care to venture to it to find the coaster.

I understand that it conflicts with the theme expressed in the earlier screen to some extent, but I think it will all tie in together much better with a full picture. I could be wrong and would be willing to look in other directions for the overall theme if that may be the case.

Kilika Temple sounds so familiar....that's not a FFX place is it?

  • inthemanual%s's Photo

it is. I think I mentioned that on the project page, but I don't remember for sure. It's where i got my inspiration from, although this is quite a bit different.

  • Liampie%s's Photo

Sounds like you have a plan after all! That's good.

Kilika was a H2H4 park, by the way.

Still, though, I don't think the brighter colors in this screen are really working here. I'd try darker or less saturated alternatives
