Description
USS Essex (CV-9) was the first ship in the 24-ship Essex-class of the United States Navy during World War II. She was launched in 1942 and earned a Presidential Unit Citation along with 13 battle stars in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, she was modernized in the 1950s; serving in the Atlantic, earning 4 more battle stars in the Korean War, and a Navy Unit Commendation. The ship also served as the recovery carrier for Apollo 7.
Essex was decommissioned in 1969 and sold for scrap in 1975... But a new life may yet await this ship.
Essex is shown here underway to her new home port; sporting her 1945 configuration and US Navy Measure 12 camouflage.

The side looks pretty nice but the deck feels very empty.

Holy fuck... I always wanted to do an aircraft carrier with planes flying around and everything... looks like you beat me to it... I'm very stoked.

Yep, you can do more with the deck. Excellent start though.

Certainly looks better than when you showed me and it was just a hull
I think with the deck being such a simple thing, you can achieve a much higher level of detail with it to make it better for RCT.

Anyone have suggestions for the deck? I tried some aircraft designs but the scale didn't seem quite right or I couldn't make them look right.
My first thought would be to change the interior texture of the deck. I could add railings too; most of the reference pictures didn't have those but I think it might make it look better for RCT.
I also realized I forgot some deck lines and catapults.
Another thing I could try is planes with folded wings stored on the deck; does anyone have any tips for trying that?

The way I see it, an aircraft carrier is essentially a floating airport. So you need plane storage, you need a runway, you need helipads etc. etc.

I love the scale of this. very impressive

Yeah; After the fact I realized I completely forgot the lines for the take off lanes, the catapults, and outlining for plane parking and the elevator.
I may include a helicopter model for the final concept, but as this is the 1945 configuration, I may not put in a dedicated helipad.

Really an excellent job, looks very accurate. Love the 5" batteries. The port beam elevator should be thinner than the flight deck and have the boundaries marked. Unsure if this is just my World of Warships experience talking but I'm pretty sure she should have several dozen 20mm Oerlikon singles by 1945.
Shame there isn't a better blue for the measure 22 - could maybe do glass fence over the blue to darken it or use a palette swap.
What it really needs is some Hellcats or Corsairs! You could do full strike/rearm deck configuration with the arresting cables, LSO, crash team on deck, etc. Better deck texture might be the wooden quarter-tiles in grey.

Yeah; I may take a look at the elevator again too - boundary marking is in the plans.
I thought about doing the 20 mm; but I can't find an appropriate object. Deck texture will be re-evaluated after I take a second look at deck markings.
I'd love to put some planes on there, but it's tough to make them look good at this scale. I'm thinking about turning this into something like the Intrepid museum with a bunch of different kinds of aircraft on the flight deck as museum exhibits. Modern aircraft may be easier to replicate in RCT.

20mms- Try maybe GWQTRFSC for the barrels, 1k barrel for the ammo drums, XXDECO06 for the blast shield?
CoasterCreator9 Offline
That looks like it could work; I'll give those a shot. The hard part will be the ammunition drums, as the barrel seems a little big; but I'll try out a few designs and hopefully come up with something!

Nice!
