Actually Ride6, I'm *pretty* sure both premier Mr Freezes were delayed to add boosters to the vertical spike to give the train more speed to not valley.

notice something in common here though Volcano, Mr. Freezes, all launched rides. i think is better to ask for someone to name a coaster with boosters that starts with a lift hill.

I love how people keep calling it 'Napa Rui'. I crack up every time I see that.

-- Oh no wonder, that's what the poll says! Doh! Nice one Cork :)

Not only are the launched but they're LIM launched. I guess technically impulse coaster are "boosted" as well.

Whatever, there'll be a cold day in hell before B&M uses boosters half-way through the course on a looper.

I can give a couple other examples of launched coasters that have boosters, but that's besides the point. We're talking about decent length, full circuit, non-launched coasters. The only non-launched ride with boosters that I can think of is the Matterhorn Bobsled. It's many block brakes can also speed up the cars. I think most coasters MCBRs have something similar, but they're probably only used when the coaster train is brought to a stop, unlike with the Matterhorn where they're always in use. There probably are a few others, but I don't think it's very common. Definitely not enough where it can be used as an excuse for poor pacing.

Oh, and I can click null vote, look at the votes, come back to the topic later, and still vote. But maybe it's because I'm a parkmaker.

Where's the next matchup? We waiting until this ends?

it's because of the board upgrade. now everyone can view the votes without nulling their own vote.

Yeah but then B&M hasn't made an interesting coaster layout in years. I think boosters are too often used as an excuse for poor pacing as well, but it's also unfair to say they should never be used because people like B&M don't use them. Sometimes a ride does need boosters. Sometimes that's part of the pacing. I think you have to look at it on a case by case basis instead of saying boosters are always wrong. I'd more accurately say that they're usually used more as a cheat than part of the ride design, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be used well.

    Hulk ;)

I think we can put that under the category of a launched coaster, because it is a launched coaster. Even then, it's not like it has boosters midway through the course. It has a launched lift hill.

I think the big thunders mountain have the boosters mid layout but I could be fallible...

I and many think that they are great rides nonetheless.

LoL! very often I read in topics: " is this still RCTycoon, or is it Archy Tycoon now?" (not an injustified question as such though...)

But this discussion seems more like "is this just RCT, or are we now behaving like we are all coaster-building companies......"

Okay, it's summer, and the ones that are not on vacation nor building their asses off for a park, must be bored and getting into this kind of "catching flies" as we call it here.....

I voted Demigods, because the whole thing just appealed more to me than the other one, although the difference was not really huge.
Could elaborate more on my choice, but the current discussion does not give me any appetite to do so..

also I think, because so many (not all, mind you) are actively tiny-nitty-biting here on (blown up ?) details, while I never or hardly ever have seen them producing anything themselves, let alone in restricted circumstances.... I don't say one has no right to comment on false notes from the violin-player when one cannot play the violin oneself, but still I value the comments of other violin-players higher (as long of course as they are not only blindly fighting for their own money/glory as so many do here for their own team..... :D )

Most coasters with "boosters" actually have drive wheels, guys. It's a slight difference in that while they're technically boosters, they're used more for speed control rather than sheer acceleration.

Meanwhile.... (gimme a minute after this post)

Ah my bad, I completely misread that. In that case, I couldn't agree more with you Emergo :D.

I take boosters/brakes very seriously because I agree with chapelz - if you can't build a well-paced layout without using boosters/brakes in odd places then I don't think you're a good coaster builder.

Either that or you ARE a good coaster builder, you're just lazy with it. Which is just as bad.

And I can see the votes before voting - why do you think i'm able to comment on the closeness of the match if I haven't voted myself?!

I still find it very strange that the community can be split completely equally. I really do.

But people can not see the voting results before they vote, right?

    well, they can.
if you hit "show results", it'll show and next time you view the thread it asks you to vote.

but the arguement is simply an issue with ethics. is it better to use a couple of boosters mid layout to keep up the pacing and ensure a better ride for its riders (its not as though the ride was trying to go out of its way to be realistic, the extra hills actually suggest just going out of its way literally) or to just leave the coaster with crappy pacing that seems only owing itself to rushing issues.

Just look at it as which coaster would you rather ride and then everything is simple but of course the people reading this have probably already voted or will vote without reading anything especially from somebody on iris' team.
  • mantis%s's Photo
To be frank I sometimes wish people had left the boosters out. It strikes me as the laziest of things. At least if there weren't any boosters then i'd think to myself 'ok they're no that great at coasters' rather than 'man I can't believe they're so lazy'.

What's even more galling is the fact that all that time building boring buildings would be better spent making the coaster great. I'd much rather see a slightly less finished map with a great coaster than I would a more complete map with a crap one.

(Disclaimer: i'm talking in general terms here, rather than about these specific maps. I can't pass judgement on either of these parks in these terms.)
