Description
De Bijlmer, a large new and ambitious suburb designed with the ideas of Le Corbusier in mind, welcomed its first residents in 1968. Within a decade, De Bijlmer fell into decay and became a dangerous and notorious neighbourhood, and the closest thing to a Ghetto we've ever had in The Netherlands. Since the 90's much of De Bijlmer had been demolished or revived again, with quite some success, but I'll never forget the look of the towers from the highway, those endless intimidating concrete walls reducing the sky to a geometrical blue shape high up, the garbage in the trees, and the mysteries surrounding the storage boxes. De Bijlmer was mostly a failure, but definitely a fascinating failure that holds a special place in my heart. This micro is a poor tribute to De Bijlmer and doesn't do this write up much justice. But hopefully you'll enjoy it anyway.
