Pro Tour 4. When the elite battle, who will come out on top?
Prelim #8 - Best Steel Coaster
Please note that failure to follow any of the following rules will result in disqualification.
Pro Tour 4 Prelims
Unlike before, you won't be granted qualification if you win. Each entry is judged by the elite and must hit an average of 80% or above to gain qualification to the final round. The reason for the short deadlines is that we want to emphasise that we are looking for potential, your entry will be judged on quality, not quantity. The prelims are a showcase of talent, show us the quality you are capable of building to gain a qualification spot. Results from each prelim will be posted around 2 days after each deadline.
(1) To gain qualification an average score of 80% or higher from the elite panel is needed. (2) Your entry must meet the correct prelim criteria. In each category you will be judged on the criteria alone, you may wish to enhance this by additional surroundings, however keep the main criteria in mind. (3) You may enter as many prelims as you wish, but remember this is a contest of quality, not quantity. However, only 1 entry per person, per prelim is allowed. (4) There is no limit on how many people can qualify. If you hit the 80% mark, you will qualify regardless of where you finish in the prelim. (5) Your entry MUST be anonymous. Whilst your style may give your work away, there MUST be no mention of who has built the entry. All entries must be never seen before work. This includes streaming or posting any screenshots of old, recycled, work or new work. (6) Entries must be submitted to us by the respective deadline via our PM system.
"I like the idea, but all the straight track kinda ruins the flow." -SixFrags
"The second entry is mostly what I referred to in this post... A hard entry to judge due to the unfinishedness. Honestly I expected much more prelims like this, more like a sketchy marketing pitch than a finished product." -Liampie
"Quite a nice idea, I can see it being built in real life, but to be honest it just didn't have the quality." -Turtle
"A bit risky to build a recreation in a prelim. I didn't really like the long sections of track - sure the speed requires such radii but still it doesn't look that good. Can't really judge the layout besides the accuracy and that was pretty nicely done. Supports were a bit over the top and missed footers. The station didn't look good (that's the only interesting thing in the real counterpart) and the surroundings were boring. Keep at it and you will be there soon!" -5dave
"The only thing I liked about this was the massive amount of white track and its supports. All the other things are uninspired and boring." -Fr3ak
"Layout was nice enough for the coaster it was mimicking but it just wasn't really exciting given the barrenness of the map." -Loopy
"Surprising to see such a heavily inspired coaster in a round like this, but I think that's what let it down. This type doesn't translate into RCT so well and the lack of much else to look at brought this down further than it could've been." -CedarPoint6
"Love the layout and the rest was great too. Very nice idea you had for the layout." -Kumba
------------------------------------------------------ Average: 43.00% < 80%; Does not achieve Qualification
"The coaster doesn't work, so I'm unable to judge it." -SixFrags
"A coaster is more than a layout with good pacing... It's also interaction, integration, composition, an idea and execution. Sadly I can't judge the pacing, but as far as this is finished I can say that that all the other aspects are covered. If finished, this could be one of the greatest coasters to ever grace the community, holy shit! So good already! Based on potential, I'd vote 90%. The coaster not operating drags the score down, but even then it's still worth an 80% easily. So much potential." -Liampie
"So so difficult. The parts that are finished are 90% quality. Would love to see this finished. It's a 70%, but a wildcard from me. " -Turtle
"Pity this wasn't finished. The layout looked very promising. I just hoped you would have made the ride working before building the surroundings. I really liked all the interaction with those elements. Maybe the ride was too much built-in in the landscape - it was hard to follow the track without underground view and IMO too many tunnels make rides unrealistic and expensive. Layout of the area and started surroundings looked great. So much potential there and so sad to see it unfinished." -5dave
"How I am supposed to judge quality in an entry with barely anything in there? Coasterlayout seems nice, the whole organization of the area feels nice. Landscape could have been of great quality, the facades and buildings too — but at this stage they just aren't." -Fr3ak
"I just wish you had actually taken the time to make the coaster functional because it's such a lovely layout bar the fly-to-lie right after that second swooping drop. I loved how it was so well incorporated into the landscape. Surroundings showed a lot of promise and I'd like to see this fully finished one day." -Loopy
"I should be voting this lower because it doesn't work, which I think is kind of the main point here. That said, the coaster layout seemed pretty solid for the most part and the theming would've been great had it been anywhere close to finished. Hope to see something more complete here if you're able to get in with a wildcard spot." -CedarPoint6
"Could have been amazing. Very good layout. I hope you finish it." -Kumba
------------------------------------------------------ Average: 62.50% < 80%; Does not achieve Qualification
"The pacing and flow were good, but there were no interesting elements that made me go 'wow'. I also didn't like the pause on the lifthill before the first drop. It shouldn't be too hard to time it out correctly. Also dislike the incomplete support job of the coaster. I love the transfer section though. Great attention to detail. Pacificoaster should be proud of you! Also love the station building and queue." -SixFrags
"I love the look of the helix from one angle and I'm a sucker for parallel track pieces (the drops over the river), but for the rest this coaster felt very uninspired and boring." -Liampie
"Beautiful helix, but not enough else to be honest. Too monochrome as well. " -Turtle
"From first sight it looked nice, but the layout was way too short and uninspired. The only cool parts were the small diagonal section and the turnaround. The radius from the the first drop seemed a bit too flat to be exciting and the missing BBS wasn't necessary IMO. Surroundings like the catwalk, transfer track and the station were nice but not amazing. Could have been great if developed more." -5dave
"Helix was cool, supports were bad, station was a nice start." -Fr3ak
"The turnaround was nice but apart from that it just felt like a standard out-and-back hyper with no other real highlights. The Pac inspiration in the architecture was pretty obvious but it was nice. If the coaster packed more of a punch and had a little more interaction with it's surroundings I'd have voted a little higher." -Loopy
"Looks like somebody was looking at Apollo's Chariot-- just missing a few hills there! I actually but I would've liked to have seen some more realistic details since you seemed to be headed in that direction. " -CedarPoint6
"Could have been great. Good layout. I hope you finish it." -Kumba

Ugh, I feel embarrassed with this entry! I know it was only my second thing to be shown on NE, but I really just didn't put much effort at all into the station and surrounding area.. When I submit something for a design/accolade I'll make sure its up to a higher standard.
^You've shown that you have potential. The layout was a solid rec, but you definitely could've put more into the station and supports. You have no time limit for an accolade submission either, so good luck.
Based on potential, I'd vote 90%. The coaster not operating drags the score down, but even then it's still worth an 80% easily.
This is an amazing quote for a prelim round that was supposed to focus on "potential". I don't want to hate on you Liam, I just want to point out the most basic, intrinsic flaw of the chosen system. And another thing on the 'democracy' issue that I couldn't write in the other thread anymore: NE isn't a democracy. No online community on earth is or even could be. A democracy is either a direct democracy (every single one having exactly the same share in decisions, which clearly is not the case) or it invokes some kind of parliament, as in representation (Which kind of is the case). Thing is - without a shared socio-cultural background and therefore a shared identity, a parliament will always be undemocratic. Majority decisions are generally accepted by minorities BECAUSE there's an underlying feeling of belonging to one populace, of having in common shared conditions of self-realization. However, this is not possible for a multi-national group. There is no shared ultimate cultural background. There's no shared dependancy. There's no shared, basic non-deniable social affiliation. What there is: Rules that we all agreed to when signing up. We basically signed binding international treaties. We are a community of shared interests, shared rules and shared virtues. But one is always free to leave that community. It is callable at all times.
I don't feel 'at home' here. I got to know some nice people and some dickheads here. So just like at every other place. I invested much of my time. But I invested nothing of my conviction. Which is why this kind of has turned into a goodbye by now. It's not me, it's you. But it's not your fault.
I wasn't insinuating anything shotguns, Just pointed out. Something basically the exact same has been built in real life, Which turtle was saying. Inspired... Ideas two sides of the same coin
No, it's not us, it's you. You're the one with a problem with the system. The rest of us seem to be doing fine.
It sucks that you feel this way, and I'm not even sure what you're upset about...
I was never under the impression that NE functions as a democracy. The admins make events and decisions and we go by them. If we don't like them, like you, we can also leave. Without a general body of players, NE would die, so it should be in the admins best interest to please as many as they can, but surely you know there is absolutely no way the admins can satisfy everyone's needs and desires; someone's always going to be upset, and I guess if you're going to leave the site then that's a damn shame.
Also, I thought we were all united under the culture of roller coaster tycoon. Isn't that the reason we are all members of this site? That is our unifying reason for affiliation in the first place and its sufficient enough for us to be still going after how many years?

Hey man, I'm here for YOU. Fuck Rollercoaster Tycoon.
This is practically an inevitable occurrence during every goddamn discussion. Drama just crawls out of the woodwork, even when everyone is focused on discussing the game (you know...what this site is based around) and not being hateful and unnecessarily dramatic about the slightest comments. For fuck's sake, there doesn't have to be drama and bitching in every topic on the site. >.< It's getting worse. Something must be done.
