Pro Tour 4. When the elite battle, who will come out on top?
Prelim #3 - Best Transport Station
Please note that failure to follow any of the following rules will result in disqualification.
Pro Tour 4 Prelims
Unlike before, you won't be granted qualification if you win. Each entry is judged by the elite and must hit an average of 80% or above to gain qualification to the final round. The reason for the short deadlines is that we want to emphasise that we are looking for potential, your entry will be judged on quality, not quantity. The prelims are a showcase of talent, show us the quality you are capable of building to gain a qualification spot. Results from each prelim will be posted around 2 days after each deadline.
(1) To gain qualification an average score of 80% or higher from the elite panel is needed. (2) Your entry must meet the correct prelim criteria. In each category you will be judged on the criteria alone, you may wish to enhance this by additional surroundings, however keep the main criteria in mind. (3) You may enter as many prelims as you wish, but remember this is a contest of quality, not quantity. However, only 1 entry per person, per prelim is allowed. (4) There is no limit on how many people can qualify. If you hit the 80% mark, you will qualify regardless of where you finish in the prelim. (5) Your entry MUST be anonymous. Whilst your style may give your work away, there MUST be no mention of who has built the entry. All entries must be never seen before work. This includes streaming or posting any screenshots of old, recycled, work or new work. (6) Entries must be submitted to us by the respective deadline via our PM system.
"This left a lot to be desired. Not really welcoming and I also don't understand why the peeps have to cross the tracks using that strange wooden bridge. The building looked like a prison and the platforms were too short I think. Also there wasn't much to look at. Keep at it, though. From a structural viewpoint, it was solid." -5dave
"Overall the entry came together as a decent unit but the lack of quality brought it down for me. It was a good start, but more atmosphere needed to be developed, especially for this round when it's just a station." -jusmith
"Looked quite cartoony in a way, and just not the quality or scope that is needed to qualify. " -Turtle
"It certainly fulfills train station, but I would've liked to have seen more content to it." -CedarPoint6
"What was there was good, just not great. " -Loopy
"Not much going on here. The foliage showed promise and the actual station was somewhat decent, but unfortunately this entry just comes off as built by someone who is unseasoned at the game. I think with more practice this player could shine through." -Steve
"I quite liked this, very simple, but it was nice. Nothing more though." -Louis
"There were some ok bits in there, such as the foliage and the stairs connecting the platforms, but overall it was lacking detail. The brick wall could be made more interesting and some moving trains would add a lot too. Also, it's being presented as a realistic piece, but then people could just walk right on the track on the low ground, which isn't that realistic." -Six Frags
------------------------------------------------------ Average: 31.67% < 80%; Does not achieve Qualification
"What a huge structure this was! Maybe a bit too huge for just 3 tracks? Also the building must be pretty dark inside judging by the given windows. I loved the street details. The bus station looked much better than the railway station. Overall it was missing some life (parking cars, busses, peeps,...) But the quality was nice!" -5dave
"The scale of everything seemed to be a little big compared to the train track itself, and I felt the entry as a whole to be a little stale. That being said, I did like the structure and colours of the main station and the details all around the map. This just needed a little more life to bring it to the next level for me." -jusmith
"I struggled to rank this one. The scope is there, and there is some quality, just not enough I don't think. Important things like scale and thinking about building materials were missing. Why would such a massive stone building be made for only three tracks? There were some nice details, like the raised rock mounds for the tracks to run on, but overall just a bit too blocky to make it. " -Turtle
"This was really great, although I'd have liked to have seen some motion from the trains or a cutaway of the building interior." -CedarPoint6
" I liked this one a lot. It has an idea, enough context to make it work, and some cool features. Somehow this reminded me of driving/walking around Los Santos in GTA San Adreas. I think that means you created a credible urban enviroment! Shame there wasn't any movement on the map though, that might have elevated it to 80%." -Liampie
"Like Liam, I thought this was pretty nice. The main station building did seem a little large based on the number of tracks going into it but overall a very nice atmosphere." -Loopy
"While this was technically done pretty well, I didn't like it much. The massive station is made in such a way where it doesn't look awkwardly bulky or repetitive, but you came close. I liked the bus stations, mostly because they injected some needed color in an otherwise colorless submission. I wasn't a big fan of the foliage or the chunkiness of some of the entry (the gutters, the light posts, the trash cans, the station itself sort of), as it all messed with the scale a bit too much for my liking. Overall though, not a terrible piece here." -Steve
"Loved the architecture, and the drains were awesome. Was pretty large and possibly out of scale, but I could look past that. Definately PT worthy." -Louis
"Very nice architecture in there, although the scale is a bit off imo. I love the inclusion of the bus stop and the street grid. It adds a lot of realism. One thing that didn't look that good were those unhacked train stations; If they were made with objects it would look much better I think. Very nice overall tho, just a bit too unrefined on the most important bits." -Six Frags
------------------------------------------------------ Average: 68.33% < 80%; Does not achieve Qualification
"Pity this was unfinished, it had a lot of potential. Could have been a great industrial-looking railway station. Can't really say more, sorry!" -5dave
"Can't really give a lot of feedback about this one, only that the idea was neat and that the start of the station looked nice." -jusmith
"Pity this wasn't finished, as it could have been a brilliant entry I feel. " -Turtle
"Really wish this was finished as it could have been very impressive. " -CedarPoint6
"Too unfinished to really vote anything higher. If it was a little more finished it could have been a great entry." -Loopy
"If this had been finished, I could have really enjoyed this one. Looks like you had a unique theme in mind and you started to pull it off relatively well. Really nice use of track and glass walls." -Steve
"Looking past the unfinished aspect and judging solely what's there, I don't think it's anything really special." -Louis
"Nice idea, but way too unfinished. There's just nothing to really judge here unfortunately. " -Six Frags
------------------------------------------------------ Average: 32.50% < 80%; Does not achieve Qualification
"Yes! Now that's more like it! Loved the different moving trains, the attention to detail (signs, shops, escalators and the contact wires) and the whole structure with the look inside. Exactly what I expected to see this round. Winner!" -5dave
"I liked how fresh and clean everything was here. Not sure what was happening with that stuck monorail, though. Although there was a little bit too much trackitecture for my taste, I can appreciate the skill and vision in this one, therefore I definitely think this builder deserves to be in the final! " -jusmith
"Again, kinda torn ranking this one. On the one hand, I can totally see what you were going for, having played transport tycoon a lot, and it was quite reminiscent in areas. On the other hand, the actual station, which was the requirement this round, isn't very good looking at all. I understand it's a replica, but it doesn't evoke the same feeling for me that those big four wide stations did in transport tycoon. However, the skill level is clearly there, and as such I believe you deserve a place for sure." -Turtle
"This was a really enjoyable entry because there was so much to look at. I enjoyed all the various trains and the use of monorails for some variation. I hope this person can translate this kind of quality into a full park entry. " -CedarPoint6
"The Fyra was a nice touch. " -Liampie
"This was a really fun little entry. Plenty of movement and I thought the actual station itself was well done. Little confused what was going on with the Italy monorail train going back and forth." -Loopy
"Nice! I'm not too familiar with Transport Tycoon but it seems pretty true to the old game. Really excellent job with the criss-crossing tracks and the overhead cables. Seems like a lot of great timing (and hacking?) was involved here. I really like the main station, wonderful use of the monster trucks and the peeps really brought it to life. The surroundings were equally well done but came off slightly unfinished in spots, but that could just be how you wanted it. Regardless, definitely the best of the bunch and I hope to see something from you in the main event. Great work! " -Steve
"Top quality work here, loved the look and feel of it. Really nice style and just incredible. " -Louis
"WOW! Stunning work here, so much awesomeness in here I don't know where to begin.. First of all I love the Fyra puns, I guess only us Dutch guys get the joke tho. I was lmao'ing hardcore there.. The station was also done perfectly imo. It's very hard to get a big structure looking good, and the way it's done here couldn't be done any better; It keeps its functionality while still looking aesthetically pleasing. I also love the different train types used, although again only us Dutch guys will get the different train types and how they look in real life. Also love how you made the platforms with the different path type at the elevators, the cables above the tracks, the foliage, lake, 1k ruin objects, the arrival and departure signs etc.. My favourite prelim so far! " -Six Frags
Damn, no fun for Ride6.
JanK is quickly becoming a favorite. Really hope he has big plans for finals. Has every bit of potential to win if pulled of well.
Thanks admins & elite players for letting me advance to the grand final.
My entry is a bit unfinished because one train was giving an error (visible track). My inspiration came from Amsterdam Central Station incase anyone wants to know.
Working on the trains in belgium myself and knowing the dutch rail system since I do those trains aswell I loved that entry Jan, the electric wires above the trains where pulled off brilliantly but could've been more detailed for me since I know about every part that goes into those wires and everything related to the tracks themselves, I would've loved to see you do the signs of the trains themselves, like the green lights for when they are good to go, the yellow signs for when the section in front is a stopping sign and stuff like that but these are nitpicky things that come from an insider... the station itself was great and clean use of trackitecture, although I'm kinda missing stuff like a plaza and a more prominent facade building for the station itself.
Overall more than deserving for a spot in the finals
Pretty much everything said about mine is what went through my head. I just don't have the experience building to really pull off something structure wise. Thanks for all of the comments. Congrats to Jan.K! Oh, and I was quite confused on the difference between Louis' vote being on the higher side and his comment saying it really wasn't that special. To each his own, I guess.
Wow, if we're basing off of the given sample size then I definitely think what was there in ride6's was awesome
Sure he could've done more like add moving traffic. But what he did do was some of the most quality work thus far in the qualifiers
TBH this feels a lot like some of my college exams (or a swift kick to the gut; better than the nuts, I guess).
You have no idea how relieved I am to have graduated.
A hearty congratulations to Jan.K for qualifying! The entry was not the most complete but it showed the spark of promise that should allow you to be very competitive in the main round. I really liked the overhead wire work and the way you had trains coming inboud/outbound to various locations. The only real thing that I think would've helped (that would've been quick and easy) would be some music. It doesn't have to be anything to particular, but without the roar from a B&M or the crash of a wooden coaster, the game sounds of RCT seem a bit lack-luster. I look forward to seeing what you make in the finals.
mattk48: yeah, just not really there. some ugly shades of brown and green made it seem dull and lifeless, and the station was an empty shell next to a brick box. And the wooden bridge just did not work. A valiant effort though
twiggy: maybe this could have been something? its hard to tell from that level of finishedness
ride6: overall pretty nice, I thought this deserved a little higher score. the scale was a bit funky, but the content was OK. I don't know... I'm not sure I dig your style when you go straight out realism. Your work is fun and free and it seems sort of bland when its like this. Also, that foliage was just terrible
jan.k: lovely work! I'm so excited to see what you bring to the finals, you just came out of nowhere! Really clean and atmospheric work!
