General Chat / I miss quality

The difficult thing is in this 'new era' we're trying to encourage new members to join and participate in our site. We need to do this because without new members, our membership will eventually dwindle.

 

So yes, we have abandoned our bitchiness and our harsh views as a whole, but we need to be friendly and enthusiastic and be a bit more helpful so we have these new members feeling comfortable. Be more constructive, say good and bad things.

 

The way I see it, I'd rather have more members join and feel happy in our presence, and then hit them with shit, than the usual way of hitting them with shit as soon as they enter. Apologies to gdb here but, Example:

 

-gdb joins the site

-gdb posts sub-par screens

-everyone is nice to gdb, his screens certainly aren't bad

-gdb settles down

-everyone hates on gdb and his sub-par screens

-gdb strives to get better

-gdb enters micro madness and blows a lot of people away

-gdb is comfortable and happy at the site, and is also not bad at rct

 

The old way would have gone like this:

 

-gdb lurks for years and years

-gdb finally plucks up the courage to post a screen

-everybody hates on gdb for posting something sub-par

-gdb runs away crying

-gdb never returns

-we've lost a potential member

 

It honestly makes me angry every now and then to think how many potential members we must have scared away by being so nasty. I mean, yes, we got some great members and whittled down the crap, but some of that crap could have been a shit covered diamond.

 

So yes, I urge you all to strive for greatness. Go back to the elitist views of the site we all used to have. But please, take it out on the more established members. Don't frighten our newbies away.

all absolutely true facts aside though, i strongly agree with louis. but i do have to say that there seems to be less constructive criticism lately, which can still blend in with niceness. also being very critical of the more established members could possibly prevent new members from even showing screens, because it gives the appearance of the bar being immensely high.

 

also about the old way, i lurked since about late fall 2012 and only broke that when i made an account somewhere in july 2013 to show off reddit contest park (which got denied as it wasn't properly exported ). if anybody wants to see them i'll just post them in this comment
